Episode 645: Emily Venters’ Chicago Marathon Debut: Grit, Grace, and Finishing With Heart
I hope you had a wonderful Chicago Marathon weekend — if you raced, congrats! It was such a joy to be in Chicago again.
Today I’m recapping the Chicago Marathon with the one and only Emily Venters. I spoke with Emily at the pre-race press conference — she was so excited to debut the marathon. If you had her on your tracker, you saw that things went sideways on race day. In this conversation, Emily shares the full story of what unfolded on the course and how she handled it — with so much grace, grit, and determination. She crossed that finish line about an hour off her goal time, finishing with the masses — something you almost never see a pro do — and there are so many powerful lessons in how she did it.
If you’re new to Emily, she was on the show back in May after breaking 15 in the 5K (episode 609). She debuted the half in Houston, placed 5th at the US Half Marathon Championships, and owns a 68:48 PR in the half. She runs for Nike, lives in Utah, and is coached by Ed Eyestone. Emily is also a leukemia survivor (diagnosed at age 3), and she was raising money for that cause in Chicago — another reason finishing meant so much to her. I was at the finish looking for her with my friend (and relay co-host) Erika Kemp, and watching Emily come down that stretch was emotional and inspiring.
Go give Emily a follow and a big virtual hug: @VentersEmily on Instagram. We are so proud of you, Emily — can’t wait to see what you do next.
Topics Discussed
The decision to finish anyway after a prolonged stop in the med tent.
Overheating & low sodium symptoms starting as early as miles 6–8.
Rejoining with the masses — dodging cups, weaving through runners, lost bottle tables.
Improvising fueling — grabbing Gatorade cups, a spectator’s Coke, and a body-armor drink.
The Biofreeze-in-the-eye moment — chaos of the mass field.
Letting go of ego — finishing with a much slower time vs. DNF.
Ties to her leukemia story and fundraising as motivation to finish.
Learning the marathon’s science (sweat rate, sodium, carbs) vs. half/10K.
Support system — Ed Eyestone, teammates, and the pro road community.
Mindset work — journaling, daily “how do I feel?” check-ins, and redefining success.

Episode 644: The Wellness One – Jay Dicharry: Building Strong, Resilient Runners
Today my guest is Jay Dicharry — a physical therapist, researcher, coach, and the founder of the MOBO board. If you’re in the running world, you’ve probably heard his name before. Jay is also the author of Running Rewired: Reinvent Your Run for Stability, Strength, and Speed, which I’ve been reading and loving lately. His career has spanned directing the Speed Clinic at the University of Virginia, running an independent lab in Oregon, and consulting with everyone from USA Track & Field to the U.S. Air Force.
I felt like I got a free consultation during this interview! Jay truly elevates the standard of care for athletes, therapists, and coaches everywhere. I think you’re going to walk away from this one feeling motivated, inspired, and ready to commit to your strength work.

Episode 643: Keira D’Amato – Don’t Call It A Comeback
I’m your host, Lindsey Hein, and today I’m joined by Keira D’Amato! I’m so proud of her and thrilled that her new book, Don’t Call It a Comeback, is officially out in the world. I had the chance to read an advanced copy this summer and absolutely loved getting a deeper look into how she’s processed her rise to success in our running community. We’ve all watched her story unfold—from breaking the American record in the marathon (2:19:12) in 2022, to setting the half marathon record (1:06:39), to balancing her life as a mom of two and Nike athlete.
Keira is now training in Utah under coach Ed Eyestone, and this conversation is exactly what you’d expect from her—fun, honest, and inspiring. It’s been a while since she’s been on the show, and she always makes it so easy to root for her. I’m so excited for you to hear what’s next in her journey and to celebrate this new chapter as an author.
Topics Discussed:
Book tour feelings & “imposter” author vibes
Working with co-writer Evelyn Spence + keeping Keira’s voice; how the title Don’t Call It a Comeback happened
Handling mainstream attention vs “real-life” mom Keira; separating personas
Early motherhood, loneliness, and how running/community helped
Move to Utah; choosing coach Ed Eyestone; altitude + team culture; big Sunday-off change and training differences
Being 41: masters records, recovery tweaks, and (not yet) perimenopause
Racing update: 69’ half in Copenhagen; choosing Valencia Marathon; taking the kids along
Broadcasting experience (Chicago) and learning from front-row views of elite marathoning
Storytelling/DJ/“life bits”and why telling your own stories matters

Episode 642: The Wellness One: Fueling Your Body to Run Well with Sports Dietitian Claire Shorenstein
This week on the Wellness Series, I’m joined by Claire Shorenstein, a board-certified sports dietitian who’s spent over a decade helping active people fuel their bodies to feel strong and perform their best. Claire is also a passionate trail and ultrarunner, a mom of two, and the host of the Eat for Endurance podcast.
Claire’s own experience struggling to fuel properly as a new runner led her to change careers and devote her work to helping others do it better. In our conversation, she shares practical guidance for athletes of all levels—whether you’re training for your first 5K or your tenth ultra—on how to approach nutrition to support your running, recovery, and overall wellness.
This was such a fun and informative conversation, and I hope it leaves you feeling more confident about fueling your body to feel well and run well.
What we discussed:
Claire’s path from classical musician/oboe player (Yale) to sports dietitian & endurance runner
Her philosophy: looking at the “whole person” (life landscape, health history, lab work, lifestyle)
Balancing everyday nutrition with training & race-day fueling
Common mistakes endurance athletes make — especially under-eating carbs
Tracking food intake without triggering disordered-eating tendencies
Protein, carbs & fueling as we age: peri/menopause, bone health, energy availability
Athlete performance plates & learning what “enough” really looks like
Her advice for new marathoners: start by adding more carbs and always fuel before/after workouts

Episode 641: Natosha Rogers – Chicago Bound With 2:23 Marathoner
Today’s guest is longtime pro Natosha Rogers, back on the show for the first time in about eight years and running her third marathon in Chicago. Natosha has an impressive and long running career so far—NCAA 10K champ in 2012, four Olympic Trials appearances on the track, and a gutsy (and very tough) marathon debut at the 2024 Trials that left her wanting a do-over. She got it this March in Nagoya, running 2:23:51—proof of concept that the marathon is her event when things go right. Since then, she’s moved back home to Colorado, shifted coaching to Steve Magness, and is leaning into a smarter, individualized approach—less ego, more wisdom—for Chicago. We get into why she now believes finishing at the Trials was a mistake, how she managed a mid-race pacing surge in Nagoya, why Chicago’s organization and pacers fit this moment in her career (and contract year), and how a balanced life—family, Denver community, mountains, coffee shops, even a little dancing—actually fuels big goals. It’s reflective, candid, and Chicago-ready—get Natosha in your tracker and enjoy the episode!
Top topics discussed:
Move back to Colorado; coaching change to Steve Magness and why
2024 Trials debrief: why finishing was a mistake and what it cost her
Nagoya marathon: mid-race pacing error, learning to “juggle variables,” and 2:23:51 redemption
Marathon wisdom: negotiating with yourself, managing heat/pace, “be a wise old lady” early
Injury context (sciatic/nerve chain), lessons on knowing when to stop
Leaving the Puma elite group; need for individualized training and life/work separation
Why Chicago: organized pacing, fast course, contract timing, field fit and top-10 aim
What she values in Steve Magness as a coach: collaboration, individualized volume, mental side of performance
Career perspective: longevity, duality of highs/lows, inspired to keep going through 2028
Life outside running: Denver community, mountains, coffee shops, dancing; writing goals/book ideas
Media mentioned:

Episode 640: The Wellness One: Chiropractor Q&A with Dr. Kurt Juergens (Chiropractic & Sports Rehab Center — Houston)
For this episode in my Wellness One series, I sat down with Dr. Kurt Juergens, a chiropractor who’s spent 36 years treating runners and athletes. He’s worked on the USATF Olympic Trials sports medicine team (1992) and with the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Tennis Championships—and he’s run seven marathons himself. I came in with basic (and very real) questions: What exactly is happening when something “cracks”? Is it okay that I pop my kids’ backs? How does chiropractic help runners beyond the satisfying pop? We got into feet-as-foundation, why balance and hamstring flexibility matter more than you think, how kinesiology tape actually works, and when custom orthotics (that support all three arches) can change the chain reaction up your ankles, knees, hips, and back. If you’re curious about chiropractic but haven’t tried it (hi, it’s me), this one breaks it down without the overwhelm.
Topics we cover
Dr. Juergens’ 36 years in sports-focused chiropractic care
What’s really happening when you hear the “pop”
Safe vs. unsafe back-popping for kids
Feet as the foundation: pronation, arches, orthotics
Balance and hamstring flexibility for runners
Kinesiology tape basics and postural taping
When to add PT or imaging and how often to get adjusted
Quick drills for runners and posture tips

Episode 638: The Wellness One: Acupuncture Explained with Boris Bernadsky (City of Oaks Acupuncture)
When I thought about putting together this wellness series, I knew I wanted to bring on my acupuncturist, Boris Bernadsky. Boris is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist at City of Oaks Acupuncture. He focuses on pain, neurological, and autoimmune conditions and was inspired by his own healing journey. His practice combines traditional Chinese medicine with ongoing study of physiology to provide personalized, effective care.
I first started seeing Boris in May for bursitis in my foot and Achilles tendonitis. I also asked if he could help with a strange itchy-arm condition I’ve dealt with every summer for over 10 years. Since then, he’s supported me not only with those issues, but also with nervous system regulation and anxiety. In this episode, Boris explains what acupuncture really is, what it can help with, and how it fits into traditional Chinese medicine. You’ll hear about herbs, dry needling, nervous system regulation, and why even a simple monthly visit can feel restorative.
Topics we cover:
My personal path to acupuncture and what has changed for me
Acupuncture within traditional Chinese medicine: the core branches
How needles work today vs historically, and what “qi” actually means
Nervous system regulation, rest and digest, and ear points
Herbal medicine: warming vs cooling herbs and customizing formulas
Common conditions acupuncture treats well, and when PT or other care is better
Dry needling compared to acupuncture
What a session feels like: environment, cost, insurance, and community models
Boris’s marathon training, fueling, and love of running
Tea, coffee, and nervous system effects
Choosing the right acupuncturist and the role of moderation in health

Episode 636: The Wellness One: Perimenopause, Performance, and Hormones with Dr. Carla DiGirolamo
Today on the Wellness Series, I’m joined by Dr. Carla DiGirolamo, a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist who focuses on female athletic performance and menopause health. She’s also a CrossFit Level 1 trainer, certified nutrition coach, and endocrine consultant for Eternal (the sponsor for this series!). We dig into what women’s performance endocrinology actually is, why many active women feel unseen in typical medical settings, and how to think about testing, training, fueling, and recovery through our reproductive continuum. We also get practical on perimenopause, hot flashes, bone health, strength work for runners, weighted vests, and a quick cortisol 101.
What we talked about:
How Dr. Carla blended endocrinology with sport to serve athletic women
The athlete’s frustration in standard care and how to choose a provider who “gets” training and nutrition
Hormone testing 101: test to answer a specific question, not “everything”
Perimenopause basics: a 6–8 year transition, why it feels “chaotic,” and what to do first
HRT vs hormone therapy: who needs replacement, who is treating symptoms, and risk/benefit basics
Sleep, hot flashes, and why symptom relief can indirectly support body composition
Bone health: fueling first, protein, heavy lifting, plyometrics, and running as load for bone
Weighted vests: when they help, when they hurt, practical rules to use them safely
Strength for runners: carving out on- and off-seasons, keeping a base, and using coaching wisely
