The Kitab al-Hikam of Shaykh Ibn ‘Ata’illah al-Iskandari is the inspiring explanation of the soul’s journey through this life, as determined through the Qur’an and Sunna. Along with his treatises and intimate discourses (munajat), the substantive feature of the work is the author’s 264 spiritual aphorisms (hikam)—concise, comprehensive and sublime sayings on self purification (tazkiya), and guidelines to help strengthen the relationship between humans and their Lord. These aphorisms, which have never failed to inspire, are presented in this edition according to the systematic arrangement of the great Indian scholar Shaykh ‘Ali Muttaqi (d. 975/1567), together with the indispensable commentary of the twentieth-century sage Shaykh ‘Abdullah Gangohi.

Danger of Satisfaction with One's Ego [Hikam 35]

In this lecture Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions two factors which lead one to sin and that the root cause of it is satisfaction with the self and ones spiritual condition, the seeker believing that he or she does not need to strive or do anymore to further their progress. In this condition ones weaknesses will stay hidden and they will remain obedient to their evil nafs. Shaykh advises that by the seeker examining themselves closely and always searching for their defects instead of those of others, their nafs will eventually turn to obedience and then it will become easier for them to continuously strive for good. During the initial stages of the struggle Shaykh highlights how it’s important for the seeker to continue to attend the dhikr gatherings; complete with regularity their prescribed adhkar (each dhikr providing a different nourishment to the heart) and keep the Shaykh informed of their condition as all these factors will give them the extra strength to persevere and stay optimistic through the trials of the struggle.
