Ep 222 – Benny Vaughn – Part 1
For over four decades, the name Benny Vaughn has been synonymous with orthopedic sports massage. Known as the “father of sports massage”, Benny has participated in five Olympic games with the USA track and field team. In Part 1 of this two-part episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren speak with Benny about his inspiration to become a massage therapist, how discovering massage made him want to learn more about the human body, and how his influence helped massage become incorporated in the U.S. Olympic program. For four decades, Benny Vaughn has set a standard in the United States for massage therapy in sports. Massage Magazine named him one of the most influential massage therapists in the last 100 years for his contributions in both education and clinical applications of soft-tissue therapy and bodywork. Benny has participated in Five Olympic Games with the USA track and field team, including 1996 where he served as a Manager for Athlete Medical Services and the Medical Liaison at Olympic Stadium. Other Olympic Games where Benny has been on the USA track and field sports medicine staff as a Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer are: 2004 Athens Greece, 2008 Beijing China, 2012 London England, and 2020 Tokyo, Japan. In October 2014, Benny opened the Benny Vaughn Athletic Therapy Center facility located in the Clearfork development in Fort Worth, Texas USA. This new space enables Benny to provide the same quality and level of hands-on care afforded US Olympians and Olympic hopefuls at the Olympic Training Centers. Benny Vaughn's educational philosophy is, "Education and learning nourish your soul and expand your potential." He has been a strong proponent of quality massage therapy education for decades and brings more than forty years of clinical, hands-on experience to his teaching. He believes that experience is the key to a good education. Benny Vaughn is an engaging teacher who stimulates curiosity and makes learning exciting. Ep 221 – Lupus: “I Have a Client Who . . .” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner
A client has a bewildering collection of signs and symptoms: hard, swollen ankles, a stiff elbow, fingers that “reverse direction”—what on earth is going on? It’s lupus, an autoimmune disease that can affect virtually every system in the body. It’s not always serious, but some of the consequences of the disease and of treatments for it have big repercussions for massage therapy clinical decisions. Ep 219 – Be the Pro and CEO of your Practice with Mindy Totten
In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren speak with Mindy Totten about how an injury changed her course, why she gravitated toward craniosacral therapy, how massage therapists can make the leap to a solo practice, and why she decided to become a mentor to the massage therapy community. After 18+ years as a successful craniosacral therapist, it became Mindy Totten’s mission to help other massage and bodywork therapists build profitable businesses so they could serve more people AND make a great living doing it. Through her private mentoring, group coaching programs, and as host of the Do It With Intention podcast, she’s here to show bodyworkers how to build practices they love—without burning out or selling out. Her favorite accolade she’s ever received is when one of her students called her “a humorous version of Yoda.” When she’s not helping big-hearted therapists create their dream practices, you can find her taking long road trip adventures, hanging out with her remarkable redbone coonhound, George, or bingeing episodes of Outlander. A client reports that she has a femoral artery stent, placed in 2017. Her doctor and nurse think massage is fine. All systems go, right? Maybe, maybe not.
