Ep 383 - Breaking the Grind: Embracing Relaxation as a Priority with Cal Cates
We all experience the idea that relaxation must be earned. But what if we didn’t need to have a reason to relax or be kind to ourselves? In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren speak with Cal Cates about how rest and relaxation are necessities, not luxuries, and how forgoing rest to keep the “grind culture” train moving creates a disservice to our clients, ourselves, and the profession as a whole. Cal is an educator, writer, and speaker on topics ranging from massage therapy in a hospital setting to end-of-life care and massage therapy policy and regulation. Cal is the executive director and founder of Healwell, a nonprofit organization that works with children in hospitals and clinical facilities. Cal also trains massage therapists about sustainable caregiving and partners with hospitals to conduct research about the effects of massage on people living with illness. For more information, visit healwell.org. Cal is the host of the podcast Interdisciplinary, found everywhere podcasts are available, and a columnist for Massage & Bodywork magazine. Ep 382 – Post COVID Muscle Pain: “I Have a Client Who . . .” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner
An elderly client has severe back and hip pain as she recovers from her second bout with COVID. Her doctor gave her a steroid shot, but her MT wonders if the pain is a post-viral form of myalgia. Join us in this episode of “I Have a Client Who . . .” as we look at some research about post-COVID musculoskeletal pain and the many mechanisms involved (and host Ruth Werner throws a short tantrum about a narrowly focused study that misses some important factors). This podcast sponsored by: Rebel Massage Therapist: http://www.rebelmassage.com AnatomySCAPES: www.anatomyscapes.com Rebel Massage Therapist: My name is Allison. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. How does prolonged forward neck tilt associated with smartphone use contribute to issues like “tech neck?” In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren speak with David Lesondak about how smartphones affect the biomechanics of neck tilt, possible age-related factors, and ergonomic considerations people can take to avoid excessive smartphone-related neck tilt. Ep 377 – Dialysis: “I Have a Client Who . . .” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner
A contributor writes, “I said no to massage to a patient after fresh dialysis. When would it be OK to work on this person?” Seems like a simple question. But it’s not.
