TLDC Member Showcase: Kim Lindsey
Welcome to another Training, Learning, and Development Community podcast episode. Thanks for tuning in. In case you're wondering if you're in the right place, this podcast is for folks that are involved in corporate training, instructional technology, workplace training --- basically anyone in the world of L&D or Learning and Development.
This episode is part of a new series we're doing on Community Members called Member Showcase.
In this time of social distancing, quarantining, and sheltering in place, it feels right to explore other ways to get to know one another, and in this case, a virtual chat.
Look at it this way: in lieu of cancelled conferences, events, and meetups - why not share our stories in a podcast and get to know each other that way?
So in 30 minutes and a dozen or so questions, we're profiling practitioners just like you.
And I hope this creates more connections in a time of disconnect, and we continue to help one another overcome our challenges - together.
So in this episode, Kim Lindsey.
Kim is an instructional designer at Cinecraft, a high end custom eLearning solutions company. A former lab technician, she's a writer, power Microsoft Word user, and absolutely passionate about helping her learners. Enjoy the episode.
You can find the original video chat of the episode here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/member-showcase-kim.

Community Discussion: Update on Industry Events
So it's with a great deal of interest that I look ahead and analyze what the conference agenda looks like for 2020. And beyond.
In this episode, I'm joined by Alex Salas and Rubina Halwani as we talk about the upcoming schedule, as well as our personal perspectives on how we're approaching the disruption covid-19 has placed on L&D industry events. Are we looking forward to going to any conferences soon. Not likely - take a listen and you'll see why.

Exploring L&D Job Descriptions with Cara North and Helena Smith
It may be that you're having to reassess your current role as an L&D Professional due to circumstances related to the pandemic and the disruption it's inflicting on the world --- especially the workplace.
And although Cara North had planned this discussion months ago, it's one of the more important and relevant topics we can talk about today.
In this episode, Cara explores L&D job descriptions. More specifically, she talks about three titles: Learning Experience Designer, Learning Engineer, and Learning Architect.
And she also brings on Helena Smith from the audience to talk about what these titles mean and what they cover.
Give this episode a listen - you'll hear lots of useful information and you can probably identify with most of what is discussed.

Community Discussion: How Has You Job Changed?
Things have changed. Our daily lives have been completely disrupted by the effects the corona virus has had on our world. And in most cases, our jobs have changed.
So this Community Discussion was focused on answering that: How has your job changed?
There was lots of activity in this episode as the group answered sixteen questions about their current work lives. Those questions ranged from how you're using video calls, to your emotional state, to thoughts on productivity and leadership.
Take a listen, and if you want to see some of the written responses to these questions, you can find the original broadcast here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/20200331. Go to the "Ask a Question" area to see the responses.

Meet Step Away: A Learning Event Where Creativity, Play, and Game Design Converge
Last year, a new conference was introduced to L&D, and it was nothing like any other industry event. It's called Step Away, a learning experience focused on creativity, play, and game design.
And in this episode, we had the creators of the event, Kevin Thorn, Karl Kapp, and Deborah Thomas, join us to talk about Step Away, why they built it, what it's about, and the plans for this year.
To me, it sounds fascinating. A learning event that focuses on creativity, play, and game design - AND business solutions. They're going virtual this year and given the expertise of the hosts, this may be a "game changing" event.
Check them out at www.stepaway.design and give this episode a listen. This may be the perfect learning event for you.

Telling On Yourself with Bridget Brown
There is a common thread in all of the Storytelling Playlist episodes in this series, and that is that storytelling creates connection.
And this episode with guest Bridget Brown helps make it even clearer.
Bridget talks about the how the power of story manifests when you tell on yourself. Telling on yourself does a number of things: it can help others identify with you and help place them closer to the story. It can break barriers for learners that might ordinarily feel isolated. And it creates connections when you're sharing a personal story; people like being in on the story, especially if the way you're communicating it is authentic.
And once you've set the stage to make that connection, you'll find success ahead.
Take a listen to Bridget Brown, how she finds the stories that help grow organizations, and "tells" them to make a positive impact.

Comedy Writing Tips for Learning Design with Sarah Ann Houghton
In this Storytelling Playlist episode, our guest is Sarah Ann Houghton - a comedian, actress, and instructional designer based out of New York City.
This is a really interesting episode in that Sarah presents the topic, comedy, just the way an instructional designer would, which is not a typical way of looking at comedy, but oh so familiar and well thought out. The title of the presentation is Comedy Writing Tips for Learning Design and you're going to get some great ideas on how to connect with your audience using humor, making your training more engaging and memorable, and thankfully, a much needed change of pace from what's been typical lately.
You can find Sarah Ann Houghton at www.sarahannhoughton.com and on twitter on her comedy profile: https://twitter.com/sarahannho1 and her learning designer profile: https://twitter.com/sa_houghton

Using the Hero's Journey in eLearning Projects with Jonathan Hill
It was no surprise when Jonathan Hill was invited to discuss his storytelling strategies, he opted to discuss The Hero's Journey, an archetypal analysis chronicled by renown mythologist, Joseph Campbell. This is Jonathan's "go to" story template, which involves using a hero who goes on an adventure, learns a lesson, wins a victory with newfound knowledge, and then returns home transformed. Using this narrative in eLearning can be profoundly effective and Jonathan discusses why and how.
