Bitcoin Rapid-Fire

We exist in a time of unprecendented government spending and expansion of central bank balance sheets. This is a nice way of saying 'money printing'. The myriad negative impacts of money printing are becoming increasingly understood by people around the world today, but assessing and measuring those effects remains a contentious issue shrowded in complexity.   The CPI is the metric used by governments around the world to 'measure' inflation, and many believe it does not accurately reflect the true level of currency debasement done by central bank money printing, nor it's many insidious affects.   The CPI is also instrumental in various government calculations, with many policy implications.    Gene Epstein is the former Chief Economist at the New York Stock Exchange, and the former economics editor at Barron's magazine. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been recording daily live-streams with random bitcoiners. Ctrl Pew is an expert in the realm of 3D printed guns. I think at this point everyone has heard the term, but relatively few people are familiar with the state and development of the technology. I was recently surprised to learn how quickly it was evolving, so I thought it was finally time to speak with someone who could explain it all to me.  3D printed guns, like bitcoin, represent a tool for establishing greater self-sovereignty, and so I thought a deep dive into the subject would be appealing to other bitcoiners. This episode is a recording of a panel I recently hosted at the 'Value of Bitcoin Digital' conference. In nearly all of my conversations, my guests explain how interacting with bitcoin has changed their behaviour patterns, often in fundamental ways. On the surface, this seems like a curious phenomenon, however once you begin to understand how the money we use affects our behaviour, it begins to become more clear why this occurs. However, this topic does not often get discussed at conferences, as more economic, technical or investment-related discussions predominate.  It is my view that the only thing that REALLY matters, is how the tools we use change our behaviour. As a result, I thought it would be interesting to bring together some awesome bitcoiners to discuss how engaging in bitcoin has influenced their lives, and how they see it continuing to do so into the future. I was recently listening to the Citizen Bitcoin podcast (one of my favourites) and Erik Cason was the guest. I was enthralled by how Erik was articulating so many profound thoughts, strung together one after the other, in an extremely open and genuine manner. Emil Standstedt is the author of the book “Money Dethroned: A Historical Journey. He also writes about the history of money at his blog bdratings.org. Lawrence H. White is a professor of economics at George Mason University, and a senior fellow at the Cato Institute. He is considered an expert on banking and monetary policy, and has written a number of books on money and banking including,  The Clash of Economic Ideas (Cambridge University Press, 2012), The Theory of Monetary Institutions (Basil Blackwell, 1999), Free Banking in Britain (2nd ed., Institute of Economic Affairs, 1995), and Competition and Currency (NYU Press, 1989). Recently I’ve been more vocal on twitter about gold’s failings as ‘money'. On one of those posts, Lawrence responded, and a lengthy back-and-forth ensued. It was suggested that we move the conversation over to a podcast format for a more in-depth discussion. Keyvan Devani (Total Bitcoin Podcast) and Daniel Prince (Once BITten podcast) thought it might be fun to join in on the action too.
