On any given night, when I have the time and inclination, I post an invite on twitter for a discussion about bitcoin. I tell anyone who is interested to DM me. In this first episode of 'Bitcoiner Book Club', we discuss 'The Sovereign Individual', which analyzes the evolution of human civilization through the lens of how technological innovation impacts the 'logic of violence'. Written in 1997, and read in 2020, one is struck by the unbelievable predictive accuracy of the book, which among other things, serves to reinforce the validity of the underlying thesis.    From my perspective, this book provides the best framing I've yet come across, for understanding why things are the way they are, what causes them to change, and what to expect when they do so.   This book appeals greatly to many bitcoiners for several reasons. First, the book accurately predicts the emergence of 'cybermoney' and the 'bank of nowhere', and correctly describes several attributes that ultimately came to be represented in bitcoin. Secondly, it speaks to the liberating capacity of technology, and the shifting of the balance of power from large social structures, back to the individual, and in doing so offering the opportunity for greater individual freedom. Andy Edstrom is a bitcoiner, who (still) works in the 'legacy' finance world, as a Financial Advisor at Wescap Group. He is also the author of the book 'Why Buy Bitcoin: Investing Today in the Money of Tomorrow'. This was a fun one. One of the peculiarities of bitcoin is the number of anonymous accounts on twitter with whom people interact. It's nothing sinister, some people just take a different approach to privacy than others. 'Optimus Fields' (@My_Livin_Truth) is one of them, and also the co-host of a relatively new podcast "Bitcoin Kidnergarten". Anyways, I've had several interactions with Optimus on twitter, and more recently we were both involved in the 'Drinks in Quarantine' group chat hosted by Bitcoin Magazine. It was a great chat, and off the back of that we decided that it was time for us to have a one on one. So we did, and it ended up being an awesome and wide-ranging discussion about hope, purpose, personal development, happiness, spirituality, psychedelics, community, and the many positive impacts which are often experienced as a result of learning about and engaging in bitcoin. Brandon Quittem is the author of the excellent series comparing the similarities between bitcoin and the structure of mycelial/fungal networks. It was extremely well-received and is now believed by many to be 'required reading' for anyone attempting to understand the depth, impact and complexity of bitcoin.   I've had the pleasure of having a number of conversations with Brandon over the past year, and always enjoy a good chat over our shared interest in both bitcoin and psychedelics, as well as several other topics.
