Transforming Oral Healthcare: Innovating accessible, equitable and integrated solutions

One in five Americans do not have adequate access to oral healthcare. And for many who do, the cost of care is insurmountable. Dental expenses account for a quarter of all healthcare out-of-pocket spending — that means, in aggregate, patients are personally paying $55 billion annually for dental care. Whether due to a lack of providers, high cost, social barriers or infrastructure challenges, getting to and paying for dental care is difficult for too many people. To address the broken oral health system, CareQuest Innovation Partners, in partnership with MATTER, has launched SMILE Health — a program designed to identify and accelerate early-stage startups at the intersection of oral health improvement and health equity advancement. SMILE is an acronym that underscores the innovations the program seeks: Simple, Minimally Invasive, Integrated, Low-barrier and Equitable.MATTER and CareQuest Innovation Partners welcomed  former Dean of Harvard School of Dental Medicine Dr. Bruce Donoff and **Executive Director of National Collaborative for Health Equity Dr. Gail Christopher, **for a conversation with Chief Innovation Officer of CareQuest Innovation Partners Mariya Filipova discussing our current oral health system, bridging the gap between oral and overall health, ways to make oral health more accessible and equitable and the launch of SMILE Health. For more information, visit matter.health and follow us on social: LinkedIn @MATTERTwitter @MATTERhealthInstagram @matterhealth

Tales from the Trenches: Don Brown, Founder and CEO of LifeOmic

Don Brown is a serial entrepreneur with a resume that speaks for itself. Throughout his career, Don has founded seven startups and brought three to a successful exit: he sold his first company to General Motors, another to IBM and most recently, sold Interactive Intelligence to Genesys for $1.4 billion in 2016.With a career that would satisfy most, Don had a nagging feeling that he wasn’t done yet. A lifelong interest in healthcare, an unused medical degree from 1985 and a recent masters in biotechnology pointed Don to start his most recent venture: LifeOmic. Observing a large gap in the healthcare IT landscape, LifeOmic uses precision medicine to reduce the time it takes for researchers to identify patients’ problems. Investing $20 million of his own life savings to launch the Indianapolis-based company, Don says that building this startup is the most fun he’s ever had, and he doesn’t intend to slow down.Don joined MATTER and Elise Singer, MD, MBA from VillageMD to discuss his pivot to healthcare, the critical lessons he’s learned throughout his career and what’s next for LifeOmic.Tales from the Trenches™ is sponsored by VillageMD.For more information, visit matter.health and follow us on social: LinkedIn @MATTERTwitter @MATTERhealthInstagram @matterhealth

Numbers Don’t Lie: Harnessing Data to Improve Health Equity

To close the gaps within health equity we must consciously design and develop technologies to be inclusive, and that begins with the data. You can’t fix what you can’t measure. Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine recently launched the Health Equity Tracker, a data visualization tool that displays the scale of COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations across race, ethnicity, sex and age — from a whole-country view down to the county level — all with the goal of making their data accessible, digestible and beneficial to everyone.Satcher Health Leadership Institute Chief of Staff Nelson Dunlap joined Millennial Beacon's Dr. Vietta Johnson to discuss the genesis of the Health Equity Tracker and explored these questions and more: How do you leverage data and research to advance innovation? How do you design technology to be inclusive? How can entrepreneurs leverage data to ensure their solutions aren’t repeating history and leaving behind groups that have been historically marginalized? How can innovators customize solutions to address gaps in access? This program is supported by Pandora and SXM Media. For more information, visit matter.health and follow us on social: LinkedIn @MATTERTwitter @MATTERhealthInstagram @matterhealth
