Tales from the Trenches: Dr. Chad Mirkin, Northwestern University

Dr. Chad Mirkin is a world-renowned chemist who has taken an entrepreneurial approach to his nanotechnology research. He is the director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology and the George B. Rathmann professor of chemistry. He is also a professor of chemical and biological engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science and engineering and medicine at Northwestern University. Dr. Mirkin is known for the invention of the spherical nucleic acid and its development in biodetection and therapeutic schemes, which was named by National Geographic as one of the top 100 scientific discoveries that changed the world, among other innovations. He has published over 830 manuscripts and has over 1,200 patents and patent applications, which lends him a unique perspective on healthcare product development. In addition to his academic and research work, Dr. Mirkin has been involved in shaping scientific policy. In 2009, he was appointed to President Barack Obama's President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and served until 2017, allowing his expertise to be impactful globally. On June 21, Dr. Mirkin joined MATTER and Jeff Aronin from Paragon Biosciences to discuss his dynamic career, lessons in nanotechnology and what’s next for his research at Northwestern.
