How many ads in podcasts? Where do you live?

This is sponsored by Sounds Good, from CBC. From the staff at CBC Podcasts, Sounds Good is a bi-weekly newsletter that offers the latest in news, events and industry buzz from podcast creators and producers. Subscribe now.Visit https://podnews.net/update/ads-in-podcasts-dai for all the links, and to get our newsletter. Mobituaries with Mo Rocca is one of the biggest podcasts in the US, produced by CBS News and monetised by iHeart. Yet, depending where you listen, you get significantly more advertising. We compared the same episode, downloaded from Brisbane, Los Angeles and New York. The ads are marked here in yellow. When downloaded in Australia, you get just two 30” ads (for a gambling company); when downloaded via a VPN in California, the adload was ten minutes 29 seconds (20% of the whole show). New York listeners get even more. In our second spot break, in California we were served a 2’55” break. Yet, one Podnews reader on the East US coast heard the same episode: they were given a five minute spot break at that point. In total, they were given 18’40” of ads in the same show. Yikes. (Is our reader a desirable audience member, perhaps?) Oddly, in California the second spot break was exactly the same as the third spot break. Cumulus Media, the owner of the Westwood One Podcast Network, might be delisted from NASDAQ again, after the company traded below $1 a share for more than thirty days. It’s got until the middle of next year to sort things out, though. It was last delisted in 2017. Happy Christmas to ART19, which certified to IAB v2.2 podcast guidelines on Dec 23. The IAB requires annual recertification, yet four companies still appearing in the IAB’s list were last certified in 2021 - three from iHeart (Omny Studio, Spreaker and Voxnest); and the German podcast host Audiorella. Moments defining podcasting in 2024

In the list, Haliey “Hawk Tuah” Welch, Donald Trump, and Mark Zuckerberg in Acquired. And others, too. Podcasters using affiliate marketing to earn revenue should know about PayPal’s Honey browser extension - which is rewriting your affiliate codes to theirs, so even if you successfully promote a product, if Honey is installed on a user’s machine, PayPal get the commission, not your podcast. Justin Baldoni’s Man Enough podcast has lost Liz Plank, the show’s co-host, who has announced she is to step away from the show, in a statement. Baldoni has been accused of sexual harassment and a smear campaign, by Blake Lively. The show, which started in 2021, is additionally co-hosted by Wayfarer Studios CEO Jamey Heath, who is also named in Lively’s complaint. Omny Studio has the most, at 1,665 (down by 15% since Dec 1), Libsyn has 1,192 (down by 57%) and Simplecast 973 (down by 37%). Chartable prefixes still work - but they won’t for much longer. There’s a lot of pressure to have a time of joy and happiness right now: but if things become too much, there are plenty of people who can help talk things out - and they’re available today. Here’s a list of helpful numbers and online chat services. Tips and tricks You wanted free transcriptions for your podcast as your Christmas present this year? We link to two types of free software: one fancy website or desktop app from Spreaker; and one terminal command piece of software that you can include in your automations. The latter one, whisper-cpp, has been upgraded to work significantly faster and more accurately using a new model. Podcast News Audio fiction is hard to produce as an "always-on" podcast (with all the benefits that brings), but Josie’s Lonely Hearts Club has succeeded, publishing an episode a week in 2024. It's partially done by making the show a hybrid of scripted and improvised - giving the show both narrative arcs, but also what the makers call "the electric energy of live comedy". It's a neat method of making a show, and must work - it's just picked up an award! Some beer names are so ridiculous, they would make a good movie. (Our Editor's beer advent calendar makes that clear). The show Beer Me That Movie finds silly beer names and makes movies from them; and to keep the feed alive over the holiday period, here’s a neat idea - they're getting Google NotebookLM to analyse past episodes, too. Sweet growth for Crowd Network

This is sponsored by Sounds Good, from CBC. Subscribe now.Visit https://podnews.net/update/crowd-growth-24 for all the links, and to get our newsletter. In the UK, Crowd Network has seen revenues grow by over 80% for the fourth consecutive year, the company says. The buzz around the podcast network includes live shows, video-first podcasts, and award nominations. Is Apple Podcasts getting more popular? Libsyn posted another small increase in share-of-download for Apple Podcasts for November 2024, up to 46.9%. (However, any episodes uploaded as video to Spotify won’t count in these figures, even if only listened in audio form). Something we didn’t spot at the time: SXM Media withdrew from the US Triton Digital ranker in October. We gather another large publisher is out of Triton’s ranker from Jan 1. Triton Digital is owned by a competing podcast network: iHeart, and in New York, the company moved into iHeart’s offices in November. The tool discovered 211 podcast episodes where it was discussed, and has summarised the relevant themes. “Are podcasts drifting towards over-saturation?” Not a view from the US, but instead, from Bhubaneswar in India, where “the streaming market seems to be saturated with the podcast content, and it looks like just a matter of time when this format will become redundant.” The article first appeared in Sambad - which is a newspaper, and we reckon it’s only a matter of time when that format will be made redundant too. (Being fair, Sambad might be a newspaper, but it has a circulation of 410,000 and claims a readership of 7 million, so perhaps we should stop being so sarcastic on Christmas Eve, good will to all, etc) Further reading: UK critic Miranda Sawyer posts her best podcast listens of 2024. For many more still, it’s podcasting as usual over the break, so we will be publishing as normal across the holiday period. We’ve got you! A special “Hark List” has been published: a look at the state of podcasting in 2024, with clips from a number of different shows. It’s hosted by our Editor, James Cridland, with clips from Buzzcast, Vergecast, our own Podnews Weekly Review, and plenty more. You can listen to it here, or, better, download the Hark app to listen and explore more new shows to listen to). The Podnews Weekly Review this week interviews, among others, Jessica Cordova-Kramer, the CEO of Lemonada Media. She talks about how the company has maintained high ad rates, and how they’re doing video, too. Here’s the full 30-minute interview on Podnews Extra. The Texas Creator Awards have been announced. Nominations are open until the end of January. That Goalhanger ad we covered earlier in the week has got a lot of attention. One UK correspondent with a good memory has remembered this similar ad for BBC Sounds from October 2018. (The lack of now-playing thumbnails in the BBC Sounds one, in our view, makes it less obvious what’s going on). AI Audio platform Auddia is to sell up to twenty million shares at $0.001 per share, to raise more funds for the company, which makes an app that strips commercials out of podcasts and radio streams. It slipped below $1 a share in September and may come out of Nasdaq as a consequence; it said last month that it might run out of money altogether early next year. Or, there’s the brand new edition of Beyond Powerful Radio, from Valerie Geller; maybe Tom Webster’s guide to building a big podcast is more your thing, or there’s more in our bookstore. Podcast News Timesuck with Dan Cummins seems to be advertising itself using fancy stickers in Brooklyn, NY. The show enthusiastically deep dives into everything from cults to killers to conspiracies, sharing the best of what is uncovered with everyone else. "Stopped me in my tracks!" said Podnews regional reporter Arielle Nissenblatt (we've made that title up, but who knows, it might be a thing). In September, Acquired had fancy billboards in San Francisco airport. The show covers the stories that built the world’s greatest companies. "Whoa! Aquired has billboards in the airport!" said Podnews regional reporter Justin Jackson (also not a real title) In August, the iHeart podcast Two Good Sports was super excited about appearing in billboards across Melbourne. The show was hosted by Abbey Gelmi and Georgie Tunny, breaking down the biggest sports stories and unpack the human drama (it's on pause while Abbey looks after a new addition to the family). Thank you, Podnews regional reporter Corey Layton (that's not his real job) In June, Calm History was recommended on NBC5 Chicago, says host of the show and Podnews regional reporter Harris (they only do one of these things in reality).
