# 213: How To Push Past Doubt And Go For What You Want
In todays episode I talk about why people get stuck when it comes to really going for what they want.Everyone is keen to set career goals, but it's common to doubt whether reaching your career goals (big or small) will actually happen. Doubt will keep you from make bold moves and taking a proactive approach to your career development. There is an easy and impactful way to push past the doubt and really go for what you want. Join me for this Career Conversation and let's talk about it.When I was on the Plane one of the things I was considering was “Why it is that people get stuck when it comes to really going for what is that they want”. So I want to share with you some insight around that and how you can be thinking differently if you are you know what you want, you know where you want to get to, you know you either want to step up in your career, you know you want to make a transition. But there is some resistance to you actually doing it. If there’s resistance its likely that what you want isn’t something that you’ve had before. If your going for promotion your going to be going for a role at a level that you haven’t operated at before. If you want transition into a new industry you haven’t been in that industry before. You are looking to do something, to operate in a way you have never operated in before. So its understandable why there’s resistance, because you have no personal frame of reference. You basically have to step out on faith and you’ve got to believe that this is going to be possible and that can be challenging most of the time. Because there’s a risk, that this may not work. May people get stuck there. What you may learn:- The power of borrowing belief. By surrounding yourself with people who are already on the journey you want to take, allows you to step forward in more faith, because you can get to see where they came from, you get to see where they are going, you get to see what they had to do.- The importance of group support- When we support each other we are able to reach our goals more quicker. We can share ideas, experiences and build our network with like minded people. #212 - Creating Your Version Of Career Success With Gillian Shapiro
In today’s episode I am talking to Dr. Gillian Shapiro about creating your own version of career success.Gillian is founder and Managing Director of Shapiro Consulting. She brings over twenty years specialist expertise on inclusion and diversity baked in with behavioural science and organisational development into leadership, team coaching and culture change. Her focus is on helping leaders and teams build the relationships needed to thrive through complexity, uncertainty and change. In addition to consultancy and executive coaching, Gillian draws on her early career background in research to improve leadership development and practice within organisations. This was a fascinating conversation where we touched on Gillian's move from academia and research to launching her own business, how she has shifted and adapted as the market has changed and what changes she has seen in the workplace, particularly in the past few years with more remote and hybrid working. What you will learn:- The power of partnership. Whether it is you as a consultant offering your services to an organisation or you as an individual that's looking to work as an employee within an organisation, often we neglect to view it as a partnership. Instead of asking whether the role is a good fit for us, we then focus on trying to prove ourselves. By focusing on partnership and the right fit, you ensure the work you do is really valued and you can really shine.- The importance of relationships. Relationships are more important than ever. When things are more predictable, it's much easier to tell people what to do or to sell ideas to them. In the current climate, we really need to collaborate. We need to consult with people, we need to involve people. And that requires a different depth of relationship. - The impact of hybrid working on relationships in the workplace. Although there are many positives, more intentionality is required. It's important to think carefully about when do we come together, who do we come together with, why are we coming together and how we need to do it in order to get the best outcomes.Connect with Dr. Gillian Shapiro at shapiroconsulting.co.uk or on LinkedIn.Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 204: How To Finally Stop Allowing Imposter Syndrome To Stunt Your Career Growth With Jaz Episode 190: Embracing The Career Change Journey With Anjuli ObaroTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CLARITY ACCELERATORIf you are looking for support with finding career clarity so you can relaunch your career with confidence, join this program >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccaEnjoying the show? # 210: Here Is Why You Are More Equipped For Leadership Than You Think
In today's episode, I talk about why you are more equipped for leadership than you think. You may be feeling as though you need more time or more experience before you can step up to leadership level in your career. More time and/or experience is not always required to elevate your career. What You'll Learn Acknowledge that we are all leaders in some capacity. Whether you are a leader of yourself, your household, your children, your team etc. Consider what you are already doing as leaders rather than focusing on what you need to do more in order to be ready for leadership. As a leader you will not have previously encountered all of the challenges that will come your way, so rather than worry about what you know or don't know, lean into your ability to figure things out. #208: How To Move Industry And Earn More Without Traditional Experience
In today’s episode I am talking about how to move industry and earn more, without the traditional industry experience.A lot of people I talk to at the moment are discussing moving industries, so I am really excited to share my insights and tips on this topic with you.It may seem intimidating entering a new industry and I know a lot of people have reservations, but there are things you can do to avoid having to start at the bottom or take a pay cut.Why do so many of us question whether an industry change will be possible for us? We see and hear of success stories from people who switched industry all the time, in fact many of my past guests have done just that.Firstly we need to pay attention to where we get our information from, a recruiter may be less encouraging of you moving industry because it makes their job a little trickier – that doesn’t make it impossible. We are also seeing a big industry shift in the way experience is viewed – the priority is now on whether a candidate has the ability to excel in a role, not necessarily experience. This is where you need to focus if wanting to switch industry.Initially you need to identify your transferable skills, and then take it that one step further and focus on the results. By focusing on the results you achieved through that skill set, and demonstrating how these results are similar to the results the hiring company are looking for, it makes it clear as to how you would add value in that role.Something I also see clients overlook is the value of their perspective – by coming from a different industry you are bringing a whole new perspective and outlook that can be incredibly useful in problem solving. So what next?1. Research – immerse yourself in the industry, identify gaps of knowledge and work to fill them2. Connect the dots – identify the skills, results and perspective you have, and clearly show that they are invaluable in the roleAs always, if you want any support with how to position yourself for a new role, just get in touch.I will also be jumping on LinkedIn live each Wednesday at 12 noon (UK time) for regular “Career Conversations”, so tune in for future streams!Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 206: How To Validate Your Career Change Ideas & Avoid Making The Wrong MoveEpisode 192: How To Get A Six Figure Salary Increase During Your Career Change With Scott BarlowTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CLARITY ACCELERATORIf you are looking for support with finding career clarity so you can relaunch your career with confidence, join this program >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccaEnjoying the show? #207: How To Master Time Management With Ease & Flow With Detola Amure
In today’s episode I am talking to Detola Amure about time management and the tools and strategies we can use to stay on top of our workload.Detola started her career in Management Consulting, and then moved on to become a Business Analyst, working with many industry giants. Then in 2013, Detola launched her own coaching practise “Super Working Mums”, providing leadership and productivity coaching to overwhelmed working mothers to allow them to find purpose and harness their time to manifest their big career goals. Earlier last year, Detola started The Productivity Company, utilising her experience working with individuals to drive productivity, retention and workforce happiness in a corporate space. On top of this Detola is a mother, activator, podcast host, author and philanthropist – making her the perfect guest to talk about productivity! We first discuss how Detola approaches managing all these roles to achieve work life harmony, and recognising that things can’t always be perfectly balanced, at times some areas will be less productive than others. Recognising the season that you are going through allows you to prioritise areas accordingly, which means you can stay more focused and enjoy the time you have.We then talk about how Detola navigated becoming involved in multiple roles, and the importance of knowing and embracing your purpose, and from there accepting and pursuing opportunities that align with this purpose.“Start with that one thing, do it well, and then as opportunities begin to come to you, don’t say no.”Detola also shares her experience of trauma, how it affected her productivity and ability to work and how she overcame that to refocus on her true purpose and take back control of her time. What you will Learn:1. We as women go through multiple “seasons” in our life – recognising and embracing them can allow us to prioritise our time effectively and enjoy them more.2. A great starting point to navigating a multifaceted career is to identify your purpose, and pursue and accept opportunities that align with this.3.
