#184 - Why You Wont Let Yourself Progress Towards A Career Change

In today’s episode, I am talking about why you won’t let yourself progress towards a career change. The reason I want to talk about this topic here is that sometimes people want to make a career change but they find themselves spinning their wheels and not making any progress. What you will learn:When it comes to making a career move, it may feel difficult to move towards what you're saying and what you want. But if you are not taking any action towards making a difference, then it may be that you're not thinking about the right things. It's easy to say that I need to make a career change and I'm going to go jump on job boards and see what's out there. But the reality is doing that isn't going to help you to move forward because when you look out onto the board, you may not see any opportunities that take all the boxes for you. You have to try a different approach if you feel you're going back and forth and not getting the right outcomes. I want to encourage you to start thinking about things differently and say, that if you were to explore alternative options then think beyond your current profile. Then we actually start exploring what that would actually look like. The job market is challenging and competitive right now. But there are people out there who are landing roles in ideal positions for them. My clients are doing it, but there are people who are willing to push past their fear of shifting to a new role/ industry. You might be seeing hundreds of hundreds of people applying for particular roles and when you see that there's so much competition out there, you start feeling that it's not possible for you to make a move right now. But there are other ways to do things, there are people that are leveraging their network, and the hidden job market so that they can learn, which is a little difficult.Uncomfortableness is for a season and it allows you and prepares you for what is to come and the role that you'll be able to land at either an elevated position or you might be negotiating a higher salary or you might just feel like you have a much better lifestyle because the role is more aligned to you as a person. All of that is available, but you have to go through a period of discomfort in order for you to do that.Making the decision and recognising  that when you make a decision that doesn't mean I have to figure it out right now. It's just that you're making a decision, and you're committing to the process of figuring it out. It gets your wheels turning and your brain working in different ways.Send us a text

# 183- These Assumptions Are Holding You Back From Career Change Success

In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about these assumptions that are holding you back from career change success. The reason I want to talk about this topic here is that this is something that happens to a lot of people in terms of their thought processes. If you're someone who's been thinking about a career change, you've been stuck, and are not quite sure what steps to take then this episode is going to be useful for you when it comes to a career change. Episode Highlights·       01:40 -  When you've been in your role for a long time in a particular industry it can feel really overwhelming and difficult to pin down what the alternatives should look like.·       04:25 - I want you to challenge yourself around the assumptions that you're making about what is possible for you because if you are constantly making assumptions about your success then you're not giving yourself enough time to see the different options that you're considering.·       06:00 - Before we talk about the strategy, I really pay attention to what assumptions are made about, what is possible for me next in my career, are these assumptions based on fact, or are these assumptions just coming up based on my thoughts.·       08:25 - I created the ‘Career Change Maker’ program because I recognize that too many amazingly talented women are missing important direction and strategy for their career development and advancement. What you will learn:  As you are considering what it is that you want to do, it could even be for you to go for a promotion, it doesn't necessarily have to be you moving away to do something different, but considering the different things you're contemplating really pay attention to the thoughts that are coming up for you. This is because if you are discounting that opportunity as you don't feel like you are good enough, it might be more about assumptions that you're making than it is about real facts. It's really important for us to pay attention to our thoughts. Oftentimes people say that they need to know what to do like updating their LinkedIn or Resume, etc. All of that is good and relevant but if you don't pay attention to the thoughts that you have in your mind, and the assumptions that you are making around what is possible, the strategy would be irrelevant. Identifying what you want to do involves two things ‘What’ and ‘How’. Once we determine what you want to do, then we can look at the strategy but don't allow not knowing what the strategy looks like to stop you from determining that this is the path you want to take. Then you can move to the how and while you're in the what phase allow yourself to fully explore. Don't hold yourself back because you assume it's not going to be possible. Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 110 : Making Major Career Changes With Louise GlendonEpisode 120: Has The Fear of Success Been Holding You Back?THIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 182: How Lack Of Alignment Is Costing You Thousands Every Single Year

In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how lack of alignment is costing you thousands every single year. I see that people go around saying that they want to change but they're not making any moves. People have the desire to make a career move but there's resistance so either people know what they need to do, but they're not taking the action, or they don't know what they need to do, but they're not getting the support. Episode Highlights·       02:30 -  What I see as a pattern time and time again, is that people say they want to make a move in their careers but then when it comes to actually taking action there is resistance there.·       04:15 - When there is a lack of alignment in your career, and when you are feeling frustrated, those feelings have to be channelled somewhere. This is when the people who are close to you, are the ones who experience those emotions.·       05:50 – Many times when I finished working with my clients inside of my program, and we wrap up and they're able to really transform their work-life, they come to me and say “Thank you for your support, and my husband also says thanks.”·       07:30 - I want us to be thinking that when we are deciding and making a decision not to take any action and not to do things differently. Know that it not only affects you but it affects those around you. It doesn't just affect you because of the emotions that you're feeling they have to go somewhere.·       09:50 -  It's important to think about where is it that you want to be because people say that they want to make a move, but they're not taking any action. When you're not taking any action then you're not going to get to where it is you could get to.What you will learn:What often happens is the people that you love, the people who are close to you, those are the people that experience the real emotions. So the outside world, the work world, they get the polished version, and then the people who are close to you get the real version. So what that looks like is getting irritated with your children. It looks like not having much patience with family members who will have a conversation with you.The other aspect of being in a place where there's no alignment between who you are and how you want to show up in the work that you do is that it's not going to be possible for you to truly get to the place where your earning potential is fulfilled when you're not in the right role. All of the irritation and frustration that you're experiencing, all of that takes your energy and capacity. It is important to recognize the opportunity costs for the decisions that you're making or the decisions you're not making when it comes to your career progression and your career advancement. If you've been saying the same thing time and time again for the last few months or years, but yet you're still in the same position then the question is what is holding you back from moving forward, and then when you identify what that is, how can you be approaching it.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 174: How My Career Changed For The Better After Covid-19 Lock DownEpisode 176: 3 Ways To Get Recognition For The Amazing Job You Are Already DoingTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 181: How This Lawyer Pivoted Into An Unconventional Legal Role That Is Perfect For Her

In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how this lawyer pivoted into an unconventional legal role that is perfect for her. I wanted to share with you a little story to give you an example of a lawyer who was able to pivot into an unconventional role and how she made that possible. The reason I am talking about this example is that this particular lawyer went through one of my programs and oftentimes we hear that things are possible but then if we don't see an example of it, it's hard to truly believe it. So, when you see an example from someone who's in a similar space to you then it is easy to believe. Episode Highlights·       03:20 -  I want to share with you the three things that my client had to pay attention to that allowed her to identify and then move into different types of roles.·       05:55 - There are a number of learned behaviours that we develop in our careers and those learned behaviours serve us well because they allow us to operate in the environment that we've been put in, and they allow us to perform.·       07:40 - The second thing that she did was to address the beliefs around what good would look like. So in order to do that she had to identify what would be good without putting the filters on.·       09:20 – My client got to the place where she was aware of who she was, and was aware of the type of role that would be good for her.·       10:50 – Since she knew that this was an ideal opportunity for her, so rather than taking the approach that she used to take to opportunities, it was more yes, and so she went for it. What you will learn:This client of mine had been in her career, she started off in private practice, she worked hard to get to where she was, and she had done some testing. So she had taken some different roles, and kind of created a portfolio career for herself but was still feeling like something was missing. She was thinking about moving into different industries, wanted to do something that was more meaningful, and was using her skill set completely. So when she came into the program, she was a bit skeptical as to whether or not it was going to be possible for her to figure out what else she might do.So we learn how to show up, we learn how to speak, we learn what to say, we learn how to navigate our way through certain environments, but are those things that you've learned align with who you actually are as a person, and how you would typically show up if those things were not required for you. So it's important to understand your true self, not just the self that shows up at work, and does what you're supposed to be doing because you're paid to do it, but the self that you are outside of work. The third phase is to expand your understanding and knowledge about what is available. Oftentimes, we have our blinkers on and don't always take the time to look outside of that to consider the current landscape that we're in and how the industry is changing and how new opportunities are being developed all of the time because of innovation and change.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 155: How To Be More Confident In Your Career Change DecisionsEpisode 162: The #1 Career Lesson I wish I Learned SoonerTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 180: How Other Lawyers Are Getting Career Clarity And Making Life Changing Transitions

In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how other lawyers are getting career clarity and making life-changing transitions. The reason I want to talk about the big career transitions that the lawyers are getting is that you can go from one role to another or one industry to another, you can absolutely do it. You can lean into your transferable skills it is totally possible. Episode Highlights·       03:50 -  Rather than having to rely on just the traditional methods of going on job boards or speaking to recruiters, we're helping you to take a more proactive approach to make the type of move that you want to make.·       05:40 -  The coaching is there to help you to overcome the mindset hurdles that are going to come up. It will help you to understand what you're learning, and to feel rooted in the decision that you made to go on this career change journey.·       10:00 – One of my clients, Jen, who is a lawyer, was on maternity leave, she wanted to leave law completely and thought to make a career move. During the program, she realized that she didn't want to leave law completely, but needed to change her environment, and change the type of clients that she was working with.·       12:00 -  Liz came into the program, and she was at a place where she had her legal career for over 10 years. Then she decided that she wanted to do things slightly differently. Once she went through the program, she was able to identify what her strengths were. What you will learn: I have developed this career transition process, through my coaching experience, and through guiding lots of clients via a process. The program is broken up into four phases. It is designed to be very much a hands-on program one where you have to come in, you have to do the work to get the results. They start off with the define phase, alignment phase, and finally attract the right opportunities phase. So, we have the program broken down as the community, the coaching, and the curriculum. In my program, they have a community of like-minded people who are at the same phase as you, who are also not sure that this is what they want to do, or who are unsure about what else they will do. So you're able to connect with other people going through the same process and it can really support you. By the end of the program, people often end up as friends and as colleagues and are able to refer each other for opportunities.I shared a few snippets and feedback from some of my clients who went through the program as it's always good to hear the insights from people who have been through it and to share a little bit more. So if you want to see more, then let me know, reach out to me and I will direct you to some more case study interviews with people from different backgrounds so you can see whether or not it sounds like it's a good fit for you.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 98 - Why Playing The Waiting Game is Holding You Back In Your CareerEpisode 176: 3 Ways To Get Recognition For The Amazing Job You Are Already DoingTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogram Send us a text

# 179: Why Your Dream Career Is A LOT Closer Than You Think

In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about why your dream career is a lot closer than you think. I talk about finding an ideal role which means ensuring that it is fully aligned to who you are as a person and that you're able to bring to the table the strengths and values you have.I also want to talk about the fact that when you execute an ideal role or a dream role, you're going to feel like you're in flow with it, and to feel like everything's good in the way that you're doing on a day-to-day basis. Episode Highlights·       01:55 -  I hear from a lot of people, particularly the lawyers that I've worked with, who have professional services backgrounds, that they want to make a change. They know that where they are right now is not where they want to be.·       03:50 - When it comes to making the pivot, I've realized that there's so much time and energy that you spend at work on a day-to-day basis.·       07:45 – We can’t just rely on our experience; you have to recognize that sometimes exposure needs to happen before you can experience something else.·       09:10 - When I first started out in my business, I invested in programs, and got in rooms with people who had achieved the thing that I wanted to achieve.·       11:05 -  When you drill down and think about your skillset, and you think about the commerciality of your mind-set, and how it is that you can approach transactions, conversations and negotiations. What you will learn:One of the things that are consistent in terms of what clients say to me after they've gone through my program is that they have now expanded their belief around what is possible, I was  literally talking to a client in this January cohort of the program. I was asking what are some of your biggest takeaways and the client shared that one of her biggest takeaways was just recognizing what is possible for her and all of the possibilities that are out there inside her industry or adjacent to her current industry. If you don’t get exposed to something, then you wouldn't be able to believe in it and won’t be able to move on to the next big thing. We don't necessarily have to focus on the big leagues, but even for you to make the shifts, or for you to make the pivots you need to know what's out there available for you. So you need to be able to expose yourself differently from how you're exposing yourself right now.The thing that we need to be thinking about is not that I want to make a big career change but I can't take a pay cut so I'm going to have to stay where I am. Instead what we need to be thinking about is maintaining this level of salary. What are the potential adjacent opportunities that I could pursue which will allow me to continue to leverage the skills that I have and still come on with the type of salary that I have desired?Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 91 - Uncovering Your Top StrengthsEpisode 90 - Day Two: What Do You Want Life To Look Like?THIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 178: Your Experience Can Be Leveraged To Make A Career Change Without Retraining

In today’s episode of the Career Change Maker podcast, I talk about how your experience can be leveraged to make a career change without retraining. The reason I am talking about this is that I was having a conversation with somebody who is in a place where she's thinking about making a move. She has been working in the same space for the last 10 years. So, she was enquiring whether the kind of moves she wants to make is going to be possible because she's been in the same position for the last 10 years. Episode Highlights·       02:40 - People think that this experience is only relevant to where I am right now, and if I was going to do something else, I need to build up a whole another bag of experience.·       06:52 - The same way that you can bring value by bringing in your perspective and your lawyer brain in a commercial discussion, or in a negotiation, the same way that you can take what you have and use that in a different setting.·       07:20 - Just because you're coming from a slightly different practice area doesn’t mean that there isn't any value that you can bring to an organisation.·       09:25 - When we're thinking about leveraging our experience and we're thinking about making moves, please don't assume that you're going to have to start again. ·       11:25 - If you're trying to make a pivot, you can be very proactive to position yourself as someone that is interested in that area that is developing that skillset and knowledge in that area. What you will learn:If you think about some of the most brilliant business minds in the world, people who are charging the way forward in terms of innovation. Often, they spend time outside of the industry and out of the space that they operate in on a day-to-day basis. The reason why they do that is that stepping outside of your industry allows you to see things differently. It allows you to have a different perspective, and as a result, it inspires you. When people are talking about the experience that you've gained, it's not just about the experience doing the job, in terms of the technical piece, it’s all of the experience that comes with you operating in this type of environment for this length of time and all of those skills that you have developed and you have displayed are transferable to other environments. But in order for you to transfer them, and view them to articulate how it's valuable, you need to appreciate it as a skill set. You really need to appreciate the experience that you've gained as valuable so that you can talk about it as valuable. You can leverage the experience that you have to move into the type of role that you want to be doing. If you're unsure about how you can do that and what the step looks like how you would be able to leverage LinkedIn and how you would be able to position yourself then I would love to have a conversation with you.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 110 - Making Major Career Changes With Louise GlendonEpisode 111 - The Biggest Reason You Are Reluctant To Make A Career Change Right NowTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 177: The Impactful Career That You Desire Is On The Other Side Of This Four Letter Word

In today’s episode of the‘Career Change Maker podcast, I talk on the topic “The Impactful Career That You Desire Is On the Other Side of This Four Letter Word”. Lawyers are integral to our society, and then we see the fact that so many lawyers are feeling unfulfilled in the work that they're doing. The reason I have chosen this topic is that I find it incredible that there are so many lawyers who are not feeling happy and fulfilled in the work that they are doing. Episode Highlights·       03:10 – Every commercial transaction, be it about the distribution of assets, or any other aspect of life, there is a lawyer involved or multiple lawyers involved.·       07:00 – Besides seeing salary and company brand, there’re other factors that need to be considered in order for you to make the type of move, that's going to make sense.·       08:55 - When you're feeling frustrated, and you're feeling this is something's not right, all you can see is that it's like you're looking ahead to tomorrow and nothing else. The focus is too much on where you are right now and what you can see right in front of you.·       11:10 - In order for you to make sure that you're moving into a role that you feel good about, there needs to be more focus on the view.·       15:00 - When I was thinking about making a difference like knowing that the work that I'm definitely making a difference, it needed to be more tangible and handled for me.What you will learn: When you think about the goals that people have, and the things that people are trying to achieve on a day-to-day basis, typically, somewhere along the line, there is going to be a lawyer involved. If you think about the impact that lawyers have in terms of how the world goes around is huge. However, so many lawyers are feeling unfulfilled in the work that they're doing. The value that lawyers bring to the marketplace is great, but why is it that we're not feeling it?  The fact is that the impactful career that you really want to experience is on the other side of a four-letter word, which is DATA. In order for you to really determine what change or move you need to make, a full assessment would be required of what is actually going on right now and that assessment might require you to zoom out and look at different pieces of data. When you understand what strengths you bring to the table, when you truly understand your personality type, how you like to show up, and what your preferences are, then your considerations can be different when you're looking at the next opportunity. So strengths profile allows you to take an assessment, and then it highlights what your strengths are, and it lets you know what your weaknesses are.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 163: Why You Deserve A Better Role So You Can Stop Feeling Unhappy At WorkEpisode 164: Do You Want More Than A Role That Looks Good On PaperTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text
