# 189: Be Proactive And Start Building Your Legacy
In this episode I am reflecting on the Queen and the impact she has made and the legacy she has left behind. I think this is very relevant in terms of our individual journeys - there's so many lessons that we can learn from her life and how she proactively worked to leave an incredible legacy. What are you committed to? The Queen was committed to her role and duties for 70 years. She was ill but up until 2 days before she passed, she was still committed to her duties. It made me ask the question: what I am committed to? I'm going ask you the same: What are you committed to when it comes to your career? Through the work that I do with women from around the world, in different industries, and from the feedback I get from Podcast listeners, I see these women wanting to get somewhere or wanting to make some kind of move, but they are not necessarily taking action. And the reasons are " I don't have enough time", "I don't know what I want to do" or " I don't know how to position myself".My question is: is that the real reason? Because often there's a surface reason but when you pull back the layers, there's another reason that's ultimately holding you back. People often say, "I don't have time to dedicate to my career development", or "I don't have time to figure out what is it I want to do next". But then they spend lots of time on social media. When we consider the average person spends 90, 000 hours at work in their lifetime, I think figuring out what you should be doing and where you should be and how you can be best doing the role should be a priority. If time is an issue, my question is: can you do an audit on your time to really see where you are spending your time and are you spending your time in the right way?Let's make sure the time we have is time well spent. Fast forward and say, "when I'm in my old age what do I want to be able to look back and say what I have achieved". It can help to focus on what you should be doing NOW so that you build a career that you can look back and be proud of.What you will learn:How to manage your time effectively to achieve your goalsHow to be proactive in working towards your career goalsHow to gather data to help support your decision making and gain awareness of where you need to be investing your time. How to manage your time effectively to achieve your goals - learn to prioritising your time now will make it easier to achieve your goals in the future. The days turn into weeks, the weeks turn into months and the months turns into years. How to be proactive - Start creating opportunities for the roles or careers you want. Liaise with people who already have the experience which you might lack. Be strategic by surrounding yourself with people who could help you get to where you want to be. Gathering data - Doing an audit based on where you are and where you want to be is a great way to gather data that can really benefit you by creating awareness on what is is you should be focusing on and where you should be investing your time and efforts.Other episodes you may enjoy:185 - Growing Into Your New Role After A Career Change117- Stop Over Looking Experience And Missing Out On OpportunitiesTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMThis episode was brought to you by my signature program, the Career Change Maker Program. If you are looking for support with changing career direction, Send us a text

# 187 - Stop Waiting For The Right Time, Create It
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am diving into why it is important to stop waiting for the right time to make a career move, and instead create it. Episode Highlights· 03:50 – In case you're not yet at the place of your choice then it means you're tolerating your current position while knowing that you don't want to be tolerating it.· 06:00 – All of us have some basic needs, so when you don't have those things fulfilled then it is really hard for you to consider anything else.· 08:00 – One of my clients took the opportunity and time to join my program and work through what she wanted in her career. She landed a new role within four weeks of being made redundant and the role was fully aligned with her values. Had she not started the process, likely that she would have just jumped into a very similar role once she took voluntary redundancy.· 10:25 - There's a lot of introspection, research, and positioning that needs to happen for you to attract the right type of role. So in my program, I take people through the data method, which helps them to define exactly what they want to do. · 12:15 - Take control of the things that you have control over, and if you know that you're not happy in your career, then let’s do something about it. It makes me so happy when I hear that my clients have got promoted, I feel so glad that I made this transition. What you will learn:I often hear from people who are not happy in their current role, who know that they feel undervalued in their role and that they are just going to wait until they feel more confident. However the waiting period is often ongoing and not productive. If you're in a position where you know that you're not happy, why wait until there is a circumstance where you have to figure out the next move, and you're not going to have the headspace to think through what you want to do. So instead of saying, “I'm going to wait until later”, ask yourself, “What am I waiting for?” It makes more sense for you to pay attention to this now rather than putting it off till later. If you have a valid reason for wanting to make a move, then it is important to pay attention to that right now. The reality is if you want to move into something new then it's not just about you jumping to another same role with another company, it's about you figuring out what you want to do in the long term and that takes time. There's a whole process that has to have for you to have clarity around what you want to do.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 109 - The Importance Of Tapping Into The Hidden Job MarketEpisode 120: Has The Fear of Success Been Holding You Back?THIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogram Send us a text

# 186 - Thriving in a Remote Working Environment with Sarah Fern
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking with Sarah Fern about thriving in a remote working environment and how you can make it work in a remote working environment. I think there’s no better person than Sarah for me to speak to and have a discussion around making remote working successful. The reason I am having a conversation with Sarah about remote working is that she's the Head of people at Velocity Global where they help people to work from anywhere. So, I want to dive in and have a very candid conversation about how it all works.Episode Highlights· 09:15 – Our policy says if you get your job done, that's your duty. You sign up to do your job and where you do that from and when you do that, that's in your control.· 11:15 - When we say ‘Be Bold’ (One of our Company Values), it's especially important in this remote world because you don't always have someone next to you that you can check in with your co-worker or your team may not be around when you have a specific question and that forces you to make informed decisions. · 33:28 - Empower yourself, don't hold back. There are a lot of spaces in the world where you're needed and your fire is needed and we need to unleash ourselves quite frankly. What you will learn:.The importance of culture - In our remote world, if we don't foster that healthy culture, if we don't foster and celebrate those behaviours and values, we wouldn't be where we are today so people-first approach that human approach to celebrating people for who they are. We have all religions and people of the world represented and we have to work like that. So, anyone who falls out of line has a very short career with us. Navigating working remotely - Working anywhere is probably not for everyone. If this is your first job, this is quite a task because you have to become an amazing network person. It can be a lonely journey and so, we try and have a lot of interactions, we have a buddy system, the new starters, we have team members in our team who look after our new starters. We need to be really good at sharing information and we have recently introduced a Virtual HQ. It is a platform where we share, communicate, and share recordings, pictures, or any updates.Aligning Your Values - Find a workplace that shares your values, but that doesn't always exist. So, if it doesn't exist, if you can't find it, find it within yourself, don't create it. Unleash that passion and go find your tribe who are already doing it or doing it differently. Learn from them too, because we have so many opportunities, and we haven't even started properly. #185 - Growing Into Your New Role After A Career Change
In today's episode of the career change maker podcast. If you've been listening to this podcast for a while you know that I quit my career of ten years to go full-time inside of my coaching business. #184 - Why You Wont Let Yourself Progress Towards A Career Change
In today’s episode, I am talking about why you won’t let yourself progress towards a career change. The reason I want to talk about this topic here is that sometimes people want to make a career change but they find themselves spinning their wheels and not making any progress. What you will learn:When it comes to making a career move, it may feel difficult to move towards what you're saying and what you want. But if you are not taking any action towards making a difference, then it may be that you're not thinking about the right things. It's easy to say that I need to make a career change and I'm going to go jump on job boards and see what's out there. But the reality is doing that isn't going to help you to move forward because when you look out onto the board, you may not see any opportunities that take all the boxes for you. You have to try a different approach if you feel you're going back and forth and not getting the right outcomes. I want to encourage you to start thinking about things differently and say, that if you were to explore alternative options then think beyond your current profile. Then we actually start exploring what that would actually look like. The job market is challenging and competitive right now. But there are people out there who are landing roles in ideal positions for them. My clients are doing it, but there are people who are willing to push past their fear of shifting to a new role/ industry. You might be seeing hundreds of hundreds of people applying for particular roles and when you see that there's so much competition out there, you start feeling that it's not possible for you to make a move right now. But there are other ways to do things, there are people that are leveraging their network, and the hidden job market so that they can learn, which is a little difficult.Uncomfortableness is for a season and it allows you and prepares you for what is to come and the role that you'll be able to land at either an elevated position or you might be negotiating a higher salary or you might just feel like you have a much better lifestyle because the role is more aligned to you as a person. All of that is available, but you have to go through a period of discomfort in order for you to do that.Making the decision and recognising that when you make a decision that doesn't mean I have to figure it out right now. It's just that you're making a decision, and you're committing to the process of figuring it out. It gets your wheels turning and your brain working in different ways.Send us a text

# 183- These Assumptions Are Holding You Back From Career Change Success
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about these assumptions that are holding you back from career change success. The reason I want to talk about this topic here is that this is something that happens to a lot of people in terms of their thought processes. If you're someone who's been thinking about a career change, you've been stuck, and are not quite sure what steps to take then this episode is going to be useful for you when it comes to a career change. Episode Highlights· 01:40 - When you've been in your role for a long time in a particular industry it can feel really overwhelming and difficult to pin down what the alternatives should look like.· 04:25 - I want you to challenge yourself around the assumptions that you're making about what is possible for you because if you are constantly making assumptions about your success then you're not giving yourself enough time to see the different options that you're considering.· 06:00 - Before we talk about the strategy, I really pay attention to what assumptions are made about, what is possible for me next in my career, are these assumptions based on fact, or are these assumptions just coming up based on my thoughts.· 08:25 - I created the ‘Career Change Maker’ program because I recognize that too many amazingly talented women are missing important direction and strategy for their career development and advancement. What you will learn: As you are considering what it is that you want to do, it could even be for you to go for a promotion, it doesn't necessarily have to be you moving away to do something different, but considering the different things you're contemplating really pay attention to the thoughts that are coming up for you. This is because if you are discounting that opportunity as you don't feel like you are good enough, it might be more about assumptions that you're making than it is about real facts. It's really important for us to pay attention to our thoughts. Oftentimes people say that they need to know what to do like updating their LinkedIn or Resume, etc. All of that is good and relevant but if you don't pay attention to the thoughts that you have in your mind, and the assumptions that you are making around what is possible, the strategy would be irrelevant. Identifying what you want to do involves two things ‘What’ and ‘How’. Once we determine what you want to do, then we can look at the strategy but don't allow not knowing what the strategy looks like to stop you from determining that this is the path you want to take. Then you can move to the how and while you're in the what phase allow yourself to fully explore. Don't hold yourself back because you assume it's not going to be possible. # 182: How Lack Of Alignment Is Costing You Thousands Every Single Year
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how lack of alignment is costing you thousands every single year. I see that people go around saying that they want to change but they're not making any moves. People have the desire to make a career move but there's resistance so either people know what they need to do, but they're not taking the action, or they don't know what they need to do, but they're not getting the support. Episode Highlights· 02:30 - What I see as a pattern time and time again, is that people say they want to make a move in their careers but then when it comes to actually taking action there is resistance there.· 04:15 - When there is a lack of alignment in your career, and when you are feeling frustrated, those feelings have to be channelled somewhere. This is when the people who are close to you, are the ones who experience those emotions.· 05:50 – Many times when I finished working with my clients inside of my program, and we wrap up and they're able to really transform their work-life, they come to me and say “Thank you for your support, and my husband also says thanks.”· 07:30 - I want us to be thinking that when we are deciding and making a decision not to take any action and not to do things differently. Know that it not only affects you but it affects those around you. It doesn't just affect you because of the emotions that you're feeling they have to go somewhere.· 09:50 - It's important to think about where is it that you want to be because people say that they want to make a move, but they're not taking any action. When you're not taking any action then you're not going to get to where it is you could get to.What you will learn:What often happens is the people that you love, the people who are close to you, those are the people that experience the real emotions. So the outside world, the work world, they get the polished version, and then the people who are close to you get the real version. So what that looks like is getting irritated with your children. It looks like not having much patience with family members who will have a conversation with you.The other aspect of being in a place where there's no alignment between who you are and how you want to show up in the work that you do is that it's not going to be possible for you to truly get to the place where your earning potential is fulfilled when you're not in the right role. All of the irritation and frustration that you're experiencing, all of that takes your energy and capacity. It is important to recognize the opportunity costs for the decisions that you're making or the decisions you're not making when it comes to your career progression and your career advancement. If you've been saying the same thing time and time again for the last few months or years, but yet you're still in the same position then the question is what is holding you back from moving forward, and then when you identify what that is, how can you be approaching it.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 174: How My Career Changed For The Better After Covid-19 Lock DownEpisode 176: 3 Ways To Get Recognition For The Amazing Job You Are Already DoingTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 181: How This Lawyer Pivoted Into An Unconventional Legal Role That Is Perfect For Her
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how this lawyer pivoted into an unconventional legal role that is perfect for her. I wanted to share with you a little story to give you an example of a lawyer who was able to pivot into an unconventional role and how she made that possible. The reason I am talking about this example is that this particular lawyer went through one of my programs and oftentimes we hear that things are possible but then if we don't see an example of it, it's hard to truly believe it. So, when you see an example from someone who's in a similar space to you then it is easy to believe. Episode Highlights· 03:20 - I want to share with you the three things that my client had to pay attention to that allowed her to identify and then move into different types of roles.· 05:55 - There are a number of learned behaviours that we develop in our careers and those learned behaviours serve us well because they allow us to operate in the environment that we've been put in, and they allow us to perform.· 07:40 - The second thing that she did was to address the beliefs around what good would look like. So in order to do that she had to identify what would be good without putting the filters on.· 09:20 – My client got to the place where she was aware of who she was, and was aware of the type of role that would be good for her.· 10:50 – Since she knew that this was an ideal opportunity for her, so rather than taking the approach that she used to take to opportunities, it was more yes, and so she went for it. What you will learn:This client of mine had been in her career, she started off in private practice, she worked hard to get to where she was, and she had done some testing. So she had taken some different roles, and kind of created a portfolio career for herself but was still feeling like something was missing. She was thinking about moving into different industries, wanted to do something that was more meaningful, and was using her skill set completely. So when she came into the program, she was a bit skeptical as to whether or not it was going to be possible for her to figure out what else she might do.So we learn how to show up, we learn how to speak, we learn what to say, we learn how to navigate our way through certain environments, but are those things that you've learned align with who you actually are as a person, and how you would typically show up if those things were not required for you. So it's important to understand your true self, not just the self that shows up at work, and does what you're supposed to be doing because you're paid to do it, but the self that you are outside of work. The third phase is to expand your understanding and knowledge about what is available. Oftentimes, we have our blinkers on and don't always take the time to look outside of that to consider the current landscape that we're in and how the industry is changing and how new opportunities are being developed all of the time because of innovation and change.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 155: How To Be More Confident In Your Career Change DecisionsEpisode 162: The #1 Career Lesson I wish I Learned SoonerTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text
