#23 - 12 More Rules for Life Part I - Book Summary
If you’ve been tuning in to our previous episodes you would’ve realised Jes and I are big fans of JBP (that is Jordan B. Peterson), so we thought it was about time we should summarise his new book '12 More Rules for Life - Beyond Order.' This book is in line with the previous book episodes on Shattered Assumptions and Evil as it conveys the same underlying concept of overcoming adversity and self-transformation. Now just like the last JBP book we summarised, we will also be splitting this into two episodes of 6 rules, that way we can cover all of it but in sufficient detail. The rules we will be summarising today are:Rule 1: Do not Carelessly Denigrate Social Institutions or Creative AchievementsRule 2: Imagine Who You Could Be and then Aim Single-mindedly at ThatRule 3: Do Not Hide Unwanted Things in the FogRule 4: Notice that Opportunity Lurks Where Responsibility has Been Abdicated Rule 5: Do Not Do What You HateRule 6: Abandon IdeologyIf you’re a fan of JBP (and frankly even if you’re not) you’re gonna love this. If you do, you know what to do, just click that little 'like' button below and then do yourself a favour and subscribe so you can be made aware when we next bring out another episode. We hope you enjoy it.-- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: Website: https://wisewords.blog/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

Short Intros Ep.1 - Philosophy
Hello good people and welcome to our new series 'Short Intros.'We are going to be moving on from our Roam Recap series to focus on summarising books from the 'Very Short Introduction (VSI)' series published by Oxford University Press. The VSI is a book series that introduces different subjects in a concise manner and is aimed at a general audience but written by experts. If you haven’t heard of them go and check them out. They are amazing and give you a real insight into practically any topic you can think of. I think there are around 630 of them as we speak and they bring out new ones every year, so if you ever feel like you need to dive into a subject, these books are perfect. Today we are reviewing 'A very Short Introduction to Philosophy.' We explore the three main questions posed in the book such as; what should we do? how do we know? and what am I? Each of these questions has been tackled by many famous philosophers and so we touch on a lot of their work throughout this recording. We also explore a lot of the isms such as materialism, idealism, dualism, rationalism, empiricism, scepticism and more. If this sounds of interest, do give it a listen and if you enjoy what you hear, do let us know, whether that be by leaving a like, following us or subscribing to our channel, it all makes a difference.--If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: - Website: https://wisewords.blog/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogStay tuned for more recaps. If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: Website: https://wisewords.blog/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

#22 - Evil - Book Summary
This episode leads on from shattered assumptions in the sense that it looks at our assumptions about evil, what it is, how it manifests, and whether it actually exists. Roy Baumeister does an excellent job of defining what evil is and then taking us on a journey of how relatively normal people can become what we consider evil. The process that he describes in his book looks at the 4 key causes of evil; means to an end, egotism, idealism and lastly sadism. He then dives into the reasons how these 4 causes can even happen in the first place; ranging from a loss in self-control, ambiguity in following orders, and even emotional distress. This book really is fantastic. It reveals a whole other side to conflict and tries to give you the tools to see something from a perpetrators perspective. Nothing is ever black and white, instead, it tends to be a lot more complex than originally thought.Naturally, we probably won’t do it justice in which case if you enjoy the podcast, go and give the book a read, I 100% guarantee you won’t regret it. Also on another note, if you like what you hear, go and give us a like or subscribe to our channel so that you can be made aware when we next bring out another episode. Anyways, behold Evil by Roy Baumeister.-- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: Website: https://wisewords.blog/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

#21 - Shattered Assumptions - Book Summary
If you’ve been tuning in for the last couple of episodes, you would’ve noticed that we’ve been touching a lot on the topic of trauma. This book is a perfect accompaniment to the others as it explains how we construct a framework of the world and what happens when it is broken or in this case, shattered due to a traumatic event.Although this book refers to people who have experienced traumatic events, it is applicable to anyone as it reflects what happens when an assumption of any kind is broken… therefore causing anxiety. This book is probably the simplest to follow in this series of trauma books we have reviewed. It lays out a clear process from beginning to end, starting with how people create assumptions of the world, then how these assumptions are maintained, how these assumptions benefit the individual, what happens when these assumptions are shattered, and finally how to rebuild them. This is a fantastic book which I would recommend to anyone. It’s an incredibly easy read, yet full of content that changes how you see the world. It’s one of those books that when you put it down, you see the content being acted out by people all around you.Now if that sounds good, do give it a listen and if you enjoy it, do let us know, by leaving us a comment or sending us a DM. Alternatively, if your fingers are feeling tired, just give us a like or even better, subscribe to our channel. I hope you enjoy it. -- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: Website: https://wisewords.blog/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

#20 - The Myth of Mental Illness - Book Summary
The Myth of Mentall Illness book summary can be found here - https://wisewords.blog/book-summaries/myth-of-mental-illness-book-summary/Today we are reviewing 'The Myth of Mental Illness by Dr Thomas Szasz which gives a critique of the psychiatric field and tries to explain why there is no such thing as mental illness. Now as you can tell by the title of this episode, this is quite a controversial book, we mean no offence but we thought it would be interesting to review it and see how it compares with the mainstream idea of therapeutics and psychiatry. Dr Szasz’s main point about mental illness is that it refers to the mind, which is not a biological construct but a mere abstraction of the brain, thus suggesting that there is no such thing as mental illness as any illness must be biological. How this biological illness may have started is a different matter. The book is based around the concept of diagnosing something based on biological or environmental causes. How do you tell which is having an effect on the individual and how should one go about helping that individual, a drug for a biological cause or therapy for an environmental one. In this episode, we touch on many topics such as incentives to diagnose, free will in regard to overcoming an illness, drugs and whether they are a solution, and much more.I do recommend you give it a listen, if anything it just makes you question the system that we take so freely for granted. Whether he is right in his observations, it is an interesting listen that I guarantee will spark a bit of interest. And remember if you do like it, make sure you give us a thumbs up, leave a comment or make our day by subscribing to our channel. Roam Recap Ep.8
In our roam recap podcast, Jes and I review some of our weekly notes and discuss topics that we weren't able to talk about in our book review episodes.--Today we kept it short and sweet only touching on a few topics:Emotional Conjugations - how by using specific adjectives, one can distort an interpretation of an event/ action. Arguing with specificity - how it is better to argue on a specific level rather than a general one in order to get to the crux of an issue.Refining assumptions - how refining one's assumptions through the acquisition of knowledge and experience can lead to a better outcome and provide a better framework to navigate the world. Ownership and patenting - how ownership and patenting is negatively impacting collaboration and innovation which is ultimately having a major impact on fields that should be progressing such as medicine, law, etc.If any of these areas sound interesting to you, do give it a listen and be sure to let us know what you thought of it, whether that be in the comment section below or via a DM to our Instagram account. #19 - The Body Keeps the Score - Book Summary
The incredibly well-received book ‘The Body Keeps the Score’ by Bessel Van Der Kolk dives into the world of trauma and methods of rehabilitation. Van der Kolk argues that conventional methods of treatment such as prescription drugs only deal with the symptoms whereas the methods he emphasises tend to do a lot more to help the underlying problem. Being a pioneer of the field and having had over 30+ years of dealing with traumatised victims, Van der Kolk has been able to observe that the brain, mind and body all play an equal part in dealing with traumatic events. These insights have allowed him to try out new methods of treatment and determine their efficacy. Jes and I explore a lot in this episode, touching on how trauma victims experience, struggle, cope and overcome traumatic events. This book really is fascinating and anyone from the slightly anxious, to the unfortunate victims of trauma should definitely read it. --If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: Website: https://wisewords.blog/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

Roam Recap Ep.7
In our roam recap podcast, Jes and I review some of our weekly notes and discuss topics that we weren't able to talk about in our book review episodes.--Today we touched on some really interesting topics such as:The direction of thoughts - how by keeping track of your thoughts by noting them down and referencing them you are able to see which direction they were going in, allowing you to pick up where you came from and continue your chain of thought. Gymnastics - how its ethos of training your muscles full range of motion compares to the standardised methods in gyms that predominantly focus on concentrated movements. Music and Emotions - How music affects our emotions and whether producing music can be used as a way of training your internal gauge and intuition. Attachment theory - how children acquire 3 main assumptions as they come into this world; these being that the world is benevolent, the world is meaningful and finally that the self is worthy. If any of these areas sound interesting to you, do give it a listen and be sure to let us know what you thought of it, whether that be in the comment section below or via a DM to our Instagram account. --If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: - Website: https://wisewords.blog/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogStay tuned for more recaps.
