10: Further Aspects of Having & Being II - Fear of Dying vs Affirmation of Living, Solidarity vs Antagonism

In our first episode in the double digits, we hear more about Sonya's road trip as she joins us from sunny Venice Beach, California. We hear Lacey's experience voting early in Fulton County, Ga (Atlanta) and give some thank yous to the first person to buy us a coffee to support the podcast. We discuss further elements of Having and Being from Chapter 6 of Erich Fromm's To Have or To Be in the form of comparing the approach of the fear of dying versus the affirmation of living. Additionally, we discuss how solidarity and antagonism play a role in each of the corresponding approaches to life (Having or being modes). Some ideas from the chapter that we discuss:1. To the extent that we live in the having mode, we must fear dying. 2. The more we rid ourselves of the craving for possession in all its forms, the less strong is the fear of dying, since there is nothing to lose. 3. Desire for mortality is deeply ingrained in our society - evidence being many rituals and beliefs that aim at preserving the human body. 4. The only way to overcome the fear of dying is by not hanging on to life, but not experiencing it as a possession. 5.It is not easy for western man to experience enjoyment separate from having. 6. In interpersonal relations, neither partner is satisfied to simply enjoy the other - they must have the person for him or herself. Hence, each is jealous of those who also want to "have" the other. Each partner seeks the other for survival - these relationships are heavy, burdened, filled with conflict and jealousy. 7. Antagonism is a natural result of a society centered around having  -it manifests itself on a personal level, as persons individually compete with each other to have more or have better. It also manifests itself on a global level with countries competing against each other for more and more, to be the best, which leads to war. It also manifests itself in class war - people competing with each other to get to the top because of the greed that the having mode fosters. 8. Instead, in the being mode, I do not need to own something to enjoy it, and thus I and many others can enjoy something at the same time. This leads to further connection, and experiences of shared enjoyment, on which the human soul thrives.Follow us on our new IG page @rethinkinghumanityEpisode credits:Victor Ho - Technical Production (@VictorWainHo on IG & TWTR)Sonya Larrea - Producer and Co Host (@LarreaSonya on IG)Lacey Delayne - Producer and Host (@LaceyDelayne on IG & TWTR)Richard Berry - Intro & Outro readings, taken from Erich Fromm's To Have or To Be Chapter 6. BONUS: Origin Story of the Podcast - Victor Ho's Important Role

In  episode 9, Lacey mentioned that the podcast wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for Victor, and that there was a story around that fact that maybe we'd share at some point. In the absence of Sonya (roadtrippin'), Lacey and Victor bring you this story of a little bit of trickery, but a whole lot of good intentions. We also talk to Victor about his role as Technical Producer of the Rethinking Humanity podcast, his past in film, and his recent submission to the Sundance Film festival.Victor Wain Ho's IMDB link: https://m.imdb.com/name/nm11932136/--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/support This is a public episode. 9: Further Aspects of Having & Being - Security vs Insecurity, Here & Now vs Past &Future

In this episode, we discuss some new developments in the podcast, some exciting news in Sonya's life, Monica Lewinsky's Vanity Fair Article and two sections of Fromm's writing further comparing the Having and Being modes, in the areas of Security/Insecurity and Here&Now/Past&Future.Some ideas we discuss:  1. The Having Mode exists only in time. The Being Mode exists only in the here and now. What would a life look like that was oriented around the value of being present in the moment? How could we build a society that values being present in the moment ? What might that look like? 2. Time is not the dimension that governs being. The experience of loving, joy, grasping truth, (I would add conversing) does not occur in time, but in the here and now. The here and now is eternity, not an indefinitely prolonged time, as is commonly believed in western society.  3. In the being mode, we respect time, but we do not submit to it (or let it control us) but this respect for time becomes submission when the having mode predominates. 4. In the mode of having, time becomes our ruler. In the being mode time is dethroned; it is no longer the idol that rules our lives. 5. Not to move forward, to stay where we are, to regress, to rely on what we have, is very tempting because we feel secure in it. Yet in spite of this security, people admire those with a vision of the new, who break a new path, and have the courage to move forward. 6. If I am what I have, and what I have is lost, then who am I? 7. If I am who I am and now what I have, nobody can deprive me of or threaten my security and my sense of identity. Love the pod? 8: What is the Being Mode of Existence? Part II - Being vs Appearing

In what both Sonya and Lacey feel is the crecendo of the ideas we're exploring in the Having and Being approaches to life, we discuss several ideas that are central to our passion for this topic, from Erich Fromm's Chapter 5 of To Have or To Be. 1. Being refers to the real in contrast to the falsified illusionary picture. 2.  Overt behavior being in drastic contrast to the reality of the forces that motivate a person.  3. How the conscious and unconscious play a role in #2, and confirm its truth. 4. The character structure of a person, their true behavioral motivation, constitutes a person's real being.  5. Increasing the being approach to life means increased insight into the reality of one's self, of others and the world around them. 6. The socioeconomic structure of any given society largely determines the mode of existence they are inclined to operate from.If you only listen to one episode of the podcast, this would be the one to hear. 7: What is the Being Mode of Existence? Part I - Being vs Having

In this episode we discuss details of the Being Mode: What constitutes being, how activity is defined in the Being Mode, the difference between activity and busyness as well as alienated and non-alienated activity. Also we touch on some major thought leaders' ideas on how we define activity. You may be surprised by what Aristotle said was the MOST IMPORTANT activity a human being can engage in. Take a listen to find out! (Adult language included) Some key thoughts coinciding with the episode: the goal of each human is to overcome the barrier of separateness between themselves and other humans. This is done so effectively by living in the Being Mode of Existence. Being means to renew oneself, to grow, to flow out, to love, to be interested, to give, to transcend the dominance of the ego. Words point to an experience, they are not the experience. Once you begin to describe an experience, it has ended. In the Being Mode, the alive and inexpressible rules.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/support This is a public episode. Replacement of John Lewis' Congressional Seat- How it Works & Why We Need to Make Some Noise

I wanted to do a quick episode to inform you on an injustice that is taking place here in Atlanta, in John Lewis' historic district. This is the district Sonya and I live in. I cannot see the ugliness of what is happening here without saying something. All of it is a bit confusing, so I invited Maya Dillard Smith, a Civil Lawyer and the Former Director of the Georgia ACLU, to help clarify in the clearest most concise manner. She and I and several others are working together to bring awareness to this issue and call for an election to honor our democracy and the late John Lewis. You can see more of what we have done in creating the John Lewis Coalition for Democracy (@_JLCD_) and our press conference from Friday 7/24/20, as well as some media coverage, by checking out my twitter page @LaceyDelayne. In the meantime, please Sign the petition & Come to the Protest!Petition: http://chng.it/jdhBj7ww Protest: Friday, August 7, 4:00pm, Office of the Democratic Party of Georgia, 501 Pulliam Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30312 - Bring Signs! 6: What is the Having Mode of Existence? The Passing of John Lewis, COVID-19 Worsens

In this episode, we discuss in detail what the having mode of existence entails. As the prevalent mode of existence in our western society, we describe the ways having things drives our day to day lives and our evaluation of  a person's worth. We take a look at how property, power and competition are naturally at the root of a society that orients itself in the having mode. We also jump into commentary on current events, as our district has been in national news as of late with the passing of civil rights legend John Lewis, who was the representative for both Sonya & Lacey before his death.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/support This is a public episode.
