17: LOVE THEMED FEBRUARY: What is Love? Is Love an Art? And Six Different Types of Love
In Episode 17, we begin a series for the month of February focused on love. To begin, we pull our springboard for discussion from Erich Fromm's book The Art of Loving (Free here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKwIlz-dzx4&t=2706s) In it, he presents six different types of love: Brotherly, Motherly, Fatherly, Erotic, Self-Love and Love for God. We give an overview of each of these types of love as well as a basic definition of what love is, from Fromm's perspective. He proposes that love is an art, and it is thus something to be learned and practiced, and must be prioritized in order to become something a person is skilled at. At the beginning, we briefly discuss the Vox Article "What You're Feeling is Grief" by Nylah Burton: https://apple.news/AfeI0D1ydSpWD09ChXaE9ZA It mentions how COVID is affecting our mental health in an increasingly intense manner, as we are running out of ways to cope, since many of our coping mechanisms are things we have to avoid right now. Also, the amount of loss we are feeling has continue to build, including the inability to mourn the many hundreds of thousands of deaths that have occurred over the past year since we've had to cut back on gathering together. We also talk about an event we are looking forward to on April 3, and some exciting interviews we have scheduled for this month around the theme of love, sex, and relationships. Our new email address is rethinkinghumanitypodcast@gmail.com, please feel free to shoot us an email sharing your thoughts on the podcast! 16: Building a Being Mode Based Society, Part 3: Decentralization & Ending Bureaucracy
In Episode 16, we dig into the meat of more ways we can move to a being-mode based society, by two means Fromm mentions in To Have or To Be, Chapter 9: Decentralization and Ending Bureaucracy. He says we must replace it with Humanistic Management, and that in a bureaucracy, it is impossible for all members to be participating in a genuine and authentic way. This is why if we are to move to a being-mode based society, where all individuals are valued and heard in the decision making process of their communities, then bureaucracy must be replaced with a more humanistic management style, which values individuals as the humans they are instead of the things bureaucracy transforms us into. Also, think about this: Most likely, the majority of the frustration you face in getting things done with corporations and government agencies are due to bureaucracy. We'd all be better off with less of it! We also discuss some of Lacey's recent adventures abroad, and some big things ahead for April! 15: Building A Being-Mode Based Society - How We Get There Part 2: Sane Consumption Cont'd And A Fully Participatory Industry & Democracy
As a continuation of episode 14, we finalize the discussion on the idea of Sane Consumption and dive into the means to accomplish the shift to Sane Consumption as a society - one of the ways Fromm mentions we could potentially do so is via Consumer Strikes. Consumer strikes provide an opportunity to urge industry and government to make changes without direct governmental involvement, and a large majority of the population aren't necessary for this avenue to be successful. Sonya and Lacey discuss this topic as well as another means to accomplish the Being-Mode Based Society which is a fully inclusive, fully participatory democracy and industry. Citizens welcome to participate actively in the decision making, direction and everyday role of their work and health, as well as governing decisions for their community, will enable a Being-Mode Based Society. One of the ways Fromm suggests this on the government side is via a "Lower House" which consists of hundreds of thousands of Americans who vote and share their needs and input with the US Congress, and play a vital role in law making as a result.Sonya and Lacey open chatting a bit about MLK Jr Day, Basic Income, and a cool interaction with an Atlanta based future Rethinking Humanity listener! 14: Building A Being-Mode Based Society - How We Get There Part 1: Sane Consumption
"We must put an end to the present situation where a healthy economy is only possible at the price of unhealthy human beings."This sums up the foundational message of episode 14. Fromm says in the final chapter of To Have or To Be that in order to shift to a society that is based around the Being Mode of Existence, we must change the values of what we measure as successful. At the current time, success equals sick human beings & the money flowing back and forth (through a certain subset of the population's hands) like a mighty river. In order to achieve the Being Mode of Existence on a larger scale, healthy human beings must become the first priority. We discuss Fromm's presentation of the challenges we face in shifting to a Being-Mode Based Society, how difficult it is, but how it is still possible pending we put the brightest minds and thinkers up to the task. Fromm gave very concrete ideas to change the pace of consumption in our country, as it is a root of the having mode of existence. He calls the shift we need to make here a shift to 'Sane Consumption.' He says individuals need to be motivated to consume in a sane manner, and presents some ways we can advocate for that and see it become a reality as we work toward building a society that works for human beings first. Fromm's explorations of potential solutions to society's ills are present in our discussion and are, quite frankly, fascinating. Sonya and Lacey also discuss some personal news, we introduce our first business partner with the podcast, and let you know of upcoming episodes we are excited about!Podcast Partner Links: Quiet Punch - https://quietpunch.com Code at checkout for 10% off & to Support the Podcast: RETHINKINGHUMANITY Disclosure: The above affiliate links are products I personally use and highly recommend. 13: New Years Episode! :) - Reflecting on 2020 - Looking ahead to 2021. And, What is life all about? Some of Fromm's Top Quotes & What We Think About Them
Episode 13 - In this New Years Eve episode, we reflect on 2020 and look ahead to 2021. We also discuss a Vox article called The End of Productivity discussing how the pandemic has impacted people's jobs, and caused them to rethink the way they approach work and the value they place on it in their lives. The revelation of how unsatisfying the work-obsessed life really is caused them to be open to changing how they live. We share some audio from one of Dr. Gabor Mate's latest YouTube interviews from Dec 11, 2020, in which he gives a great picture of how culture causes individual sickness, disease and toxicity. Lastly we discuss some of Erich Fromm's most impactful quotes about what life is all about, and what we think about them.Links to things we discussed:Vox Article: https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2020/5/15/21252544/coronavirus-covid-19-hustle-work-productivity-ambition-loss Dr. Gabor Mate Interview: https://youtu.be/smny3TTQmSc Erich Fromm Quotes: https://theunboundedspirit.com/erich-fromm-quotes/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rethinkinghumanity/support This is a public episode. 12: How We Overcome Our Societal Ill-Being: A Shift in Individual Values
In 12, we discuss what's kept us from making a new episode for a while now (hint-hint: it has to do with the political universe ascending on GA recently ;) ), some enlightening information we've learned from newly discovered thinker Dr. Gabor Mate, as well as how Fromm discusses ways we can shift as a society from operating primarily out of the having mode of existence to operating out of the being mode of existence. The key, he says, is an shift in individual values. His recipe for change mirrors the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, and says change is possible if the following conditions exist 1. We are suffering and we are aware that we are 2. We recognize the origin of our ill being. 3. We recognize that there is a way of overcoming our ill-being. 4. We accept that in order to overcome our ill-being we must follow certain norms for living and change our present practice of life. These four ideas are present in Marxian and Freudian thought, and also are reflected in the process used for psychotherapy and to improve individual's mental and emotional health. Fromm also lists values he believes we need to shift to on an individual level at the end of the chapter - a few of those are 1. Willingness to give up all forms of having (minus existential having), in order to fully be. 2. Being fully present where one is. 3. Joy that comes from giving and sharing versus the pleasure that comes from hoarding and exploiting 4. Love and respect for life in all its manifestations - life and everything that pertains to growth are sacred. 5. Reducing greed, hate and illusions. 6. Making the full growth of oneself and one's fellow beings the supreme goal of living. 11: Further Aspects of Having & Being III - Joy vs Pleasure, Sin & Forgiveness
In our final episode profiling Further Aspects of Having and Being, we have probably our most emotional discussion yet, as we share about joy, pleasure in our own lives, what they mean in the eyes of Fromm, and how they each relate to the having & being modes of approach to life. Additionally, we see sin & forgiveness defined through the lens of authoritarian structure of the having mode as well as the being mode. Sin described in the being mode will blow your mind, as well as the simple solution to overcome it. We also touch on the spiking cases of COVID-19 now that the cooler weather has arrived, as well as the upcoming U.S. Presidential Election. Ever heard of Dia de Los Muertos? We talk briefly about it as well before we get into the meat of the philosophical Frommian discussion. :) Some ideas from the content that we share: 1. Pleasure and joy are commonly confused as the same thing, however, they are two different experiences. 2. Pleasure is the satisfaction of a desire that does not require activity (in the sense of aliveness) to be satisfied. 3. Aliveness is conducive to joy, and could be defined as when one is genuinely, openly, fearlessly relating to others and themselves. (Lacey's definition) 4. Pleasures of contemporary society produce different degrees of excitements. But they are not conducive to joy. 5. The lack of joy makes it necessary to seek new, ever more exciting pleasures, over and over again. 6. Joy is the concomitant of productive activity. It is not a peak experience, that culminates and then ends suddenly, but rather a plateau, a feeling state that accompanies the productive expression of one's essential human faculties. Joy is not the ecstatic fire of the moment, but the glow that accompanies being. 7. Sin & forgiveness in the having mode is as a result of an authoritarian structure, requiring obedience to an outside entity. This leads to a vicious cycle of disobedience, feeling of guilt, punishment, and then forgiveness. Eternally repeating itself. 8. Sin in the being mode is the separation, estrangement of two human beings who, in selfishness, cannot/do not overcome their separation in the act of loving union.
