In AD 324 the controversy over Arianism was dividing Emperor Constantine’s recently-unified Roman Empire. Constantine had converted a mere decade ago and achieved spectacular success on the battlefield over his rival Licinius , but was dismayed to return and find that the religion and church he had come to love to was torn apart with squabbling, division, and dissensions. So what happened? Did the church realize their need for clarity on the divinity of the Son and come together at Nicea because they knew they had to hammer out these doctrines? Did Alexander and Arius sit down willingly for the good of the church? Nope. Instead of the church leading the way, Emperor Constantine issued an imperial summons to the warring bishops of the East and West, demanding they convene at Nicea. The result of that month long council was the Nicene creed, a creed that has stood the test of time and is the foundational confession of practically all Christian traditions 1700 years later. This happened again under Emperor Theodosius I & II at Constantinople and Ephesus, under Marcian at Chalcedon, under Justinian again at Constantinople, and on and on. This pattern plays out again and again and again. The church wars, divides, errs, and even apostatizes, and the means of correction that God uses is often the State. This causes us Americans to bristle and protest but it is undeniable that the bulk of church reform has been initiated, carried out, and completed at the hand of the sovereign. Perhaps for all of our spirituality and airtight systematic theology we have forgotten the ordinary, practical means that God uses to save, purify, and protect his church. For decades, conservatives have been plagued by an affliction—an almost allergic reaction to power. It’s as if the only way to be truly virtuous is to lose, and to lose gracefully. Political wins are viewed with suspicion, as if governing with authority is somehow unseemly, or worse, un-Christian. But what if that mindset is not just wrong—but harmful?Take a look at Donald Trump. Like him or not, he’s leading a populist resurgence that is centered not just on rhetoric, but on wielding power—on winning. Recently, he made headlines for appearing to defy a court order that would have prevented the deportation of Venezuelan gang members. Then, he took aim at President Biden’s use of an autopen for signing pardons, questioning the validity of those signatures. Predictably, his critics shriek: "Tyranny!" But is it tyranny—or is it the legitimate use of power for the good of the nation?There is a long and deep conservative tradition that supports the responsible use of authority. Edmund Burke warned that power unused is power lost, and that liberty without virtue is the greatest of all evils. Russell Kirk argued that moral order requires strong governance. Sam Francis lambasted the Right for its obsession with losing honorably rather than governing effectively. Even American history is filled with examples of presidents who who defied courts and insisted on doing what they believed was right. Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, even Andrew Jackson understood that sometimes, the law is wrong, and justice demands action. Yet, modern evangelicals often act as if any use of power is suspect, embracing what Francis called the "beautiful loser syndrome"—preferring to be righteous victims rather than victorious defenders of truth and order. But what does Scripture actually say? Joseph wielded power in Egypt to save his people. Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem despite opposition. Even Christ declared, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."So today, we ask: Is Trump a tyrant, or is he acting within a legitimate and necessary conservative tradition? King Solomon once said that of the writing of parenting books there will be no end. From Shepherding a Child’s Heart to the gospel center movements of the 2010s, there are plenty of books out there on the *theology* or the principles of parenting. But parenting is unique in that the Bible offers little *practical* instruction. Yes it instructs us *what* we are to teach our children. Yes it lays out for us the tools of discipline. But it says little to nothing of all the practicals that make up the day in and day out experience of being a parent. This is also where books on principles or the goals of parenting typically fall short. This is because the goal of parenting is not to follow a formula, be it from the Bible or the newest parenting book, but to learn wisdom. The Bible doesn’t make robots out of parents and children, but gives them the instructions and principles to shape their souls to love and adore the good, the true, and the beautiful. And much of that learning and wisdom is practical in nature, not theoretical. The last six months have been absolute disaster for the political left. Yes, they lost the election. Yes, they have an image problem. Support for gay marriage and transgenderism is plummeting. We are looking at the complete and utter implosion of a party.But it wasn’t always this way. Less than three decades ago Democrat President Bill Clinton signed the defense of marriage act, defining marriage as one man and one woman, into law. Hillary Clinton advocated for rapid deportation of criminal illegal aliens in 2008. The Democrat PARTY PLATFORM in 2004 advocated for, and I quote, “safeguarding all the greatness of America by protecting our people, securing our homeland, and reinforcing our values – faith and family, duty and service, individual freedom and a common purpose to build one nation under God.”This is not to say they were not still radically wicked then. They were, especially on abortion. But as they embraced more and more radical leftist positions they quickly fell into the very trap they set for others. Guilt and greed have consumed their constituents. Their gender ideology accepts not even the slightest deviation from the revolutionary orthodoxy. And they appear to have no recourse other than to keep doubling down. On February 24, 2022 Russia launched a ground air attack into Ukraine. Almost 3 years have passed since then and the Russia Ukrainian War is the bloodiest European War since WWII. Likely over a million people have died, with mass torture, abuse, and starvation reported on the front lines.
