We often speak of this connection in terms of knowledge, values, and history. It is something objective and measurable. But what if we are bound together to our family, our home, and our country in even deeper ways?Traducianism is a historic Christian belief that has been a minority view throughout church history, although it was held by some notable church fathers like Tertullian and Reformers like Luther. Traducianism is the belief that the souls of children are inherited from their parents, like two candles coming together to light another candle. In this view, parents give not just their genetics to their children, but pass on a unique, personal spiritual component as well. In this way, memories, affections, vitality, and other spiritual qualities are passed down through the families and time, shaping each family and nation into a distinct ethnos with its own unique spiritual properties. Last year we did an entire livestream on how the Biden administration chose to celebrate Easter, most notably by declaring March 31, Easter, as Transgender Day of Visibility. It was the inauguration of a new religion, but one that in God’s grace appears to have been short lived. A mere year later, with Trump in the office, we got a robust, theological celebration of Easter from the highest office in the land. Not just well wishes or platitudes about God’s love for us, but an assertion of how in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ we have redemption and forgiveness for our sins and the hope of eternal life.Now in the midst of every “we’re so back” is an “it’s so over” moment. This year, while the threat to Easter is certainly not as pronounced and obvious as under the Biden presidency, a new, or perhaps old, plan of the enemy is being run.See, the story of Easter is in part, the story of a rebellious people. In one sense, we are the rebellious people, turning everyone to our own way and needing the death of the spotless lamb of God to atone for our sin. But it also is a historical story, in which Christ came to His own, and His own received Him not. Christ was offered up to death by the Jews, and they have opposed him, the apostles, and mankind ever since. Telling the story of Easter without the sober warning of the destruction awaiting those who reject Christ is not to tell the story of Easter at all.That simple statement that I just made may very soon be very, very costly to confess. This week, Trump also appointed Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun to lead the special envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. The most commonly used definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance explicitly asserts that claiming the Jews killed Jesus is antisemitic.This may be the dividing truth of our generation. Will we stand for what the Bible says, including when it is inconvenient and possibly even illegal? Nine days ago in Frisco Texas an altercation at a track meet shocked the nation. Austin Metcalf was a promising track and field athlete attending a championship competition when he got into a brief altercation with another athlete, Karmelo Anthony, over a tent. According to witnesses, in a matter of moments after the disagreement started, Karmelo took out a knife from his bag and stabbed Austin Metcalf in the heart. Austin died moments later in his twin brother’s arms. This tragedy reopened the wound and division that has been present for nearly the entirety of our nation’s history. Austin Metcalf is far from the first victim of black on white violence, bringing pressing and relevant questions about law, order, and race to the surface yet again. But as family and community mourn for Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony is being held in jail on a one million dollar bond, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised by the black community for Karmelo Anthony, who they see as a victim in the encounter, despite him confessing to the stabbing. We are at the point where even the unjustified murder of a high schooler cannot be objectively condemned as a terrible tragedy by some sides of the aisle.At a certain point it’s time to say the quiet part out loud. Why are Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont the safest states to live in and also, coincidentally, the least diverse? Why are black women more likely to commit murder than white men? And what are the implications of this in relation to what neighborhood you live in, how you protect your family, and even what sports you put your kids in? Much credit is given to Constantine for his role in calling together the church at Nicea and helping facilitate the foundational creed of the Christian church. But did you know that a mere 10 years later in 335, at the council of Tyre, Constantine exiled one of the fiercest defenders of the faith at the time: Athanasius? Athanasius remained in exile until Constantine’s death, and was only welcomed back by his son who restored him as a bishop, who then went on to exile him again a year later. Constantine the great also continued to permit the continuation of pagan temples and rituals, and retained the title Pontifex Maximus meaning “great priest of the Roman cults.” Sounds alot like America’s principled pluralism today.Now at first glance these facts are pretty inconvenient for someone who just recently argued that the state has a normative role in correcting the church. If, after all, one of the greatest supposed examples was an emperor who exiled faithful bishops and continued to permit pagan worship then the batting average doesn’t look great. This is to say nothing of the countless martyrs of the Catholic Church, the supposedly terrible Spanish Inquisition and even Martin Luther and other zealous reformers.
