Dan Miller | How Your Work Contributes To A Meaningful Life

907 - What began as a discussion on whether our work must really be so important ultimately came to our need to know ourselves and what really fulfills us individually. And while yes, having meaningful work is profound to the joy of our lives, it’s also not meant to be the end all to our purpose and calling, but a tool. I brought in Dan Miller, celebrated career leader and author of the now classic tome on work, 48 Days To The Work You Love. We had a conversation at a high, but deep level, regarding how we all perceive the value and importance of our work. I wanted to speak specifically to those who may be feeling stress and anxiety about finding the ultimate work opportunity. The “holy grail” and culmination of their life’s purpose and calling. That can be so daunting and in this episode I feel we did justice in taking some of the pressure off the work and putting the impetus on us having a bigger view of our overall life focus. Your Work As An Offering to the World

#906: We generally have two measurements for our work; do we like it and does it provide for us well. But in looking at the most successful and fulfilled people they have another measurement that eclipses those. Do I feel like the end product or service I help provide is something of worth and value to people? Not by the world’s measurements but by my own? In this episode I play a clip from Zig Ziglar where he shares a story about seeing a play. What struck him was out there on the stage, the people were truly giving it their all. They were fully committed to giving an incredible and near flawless performance to the audience. The point being for us to consider, not necessarily just how hard are we working, but what is our goal in the final delivery? So I polled my audience with this question, “Do you feel your work is necessary? Honorable? Worthy? And please help me by sharing if you do not.” The contribution you make with your work, in your own eyes, matters greatly. Not just to your fulfillment but to your overall level of success. Tom Ziglar and I talk through the comments and come to some significant discoveries. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Expand Your Capacity With Boundaries | Nedra Glover Tawwab

In this episode of The Ziglar Show I’m with Nedra Glover Tawwab, a licensed relationship therapist whose focus is boundaries. Friends, that very term holds no attraction for me. I want to be superman. I want to say yes to everything and be able to handle it. Superheroes don’t have boundaries. If you are really out to serve humanity you don’t have any limits and you don’t protect yourself, right? Jocko Willenk is a famous navy seal who’s Jocko podcast is wildly popular. Everyone wants to be diehard like him. He posted on Twitter, “Smash through the boundaries!” It showed him trying to lift a heavy weight. But he also posted this, “Leaders need to push themselves and their teams while also recognizing their limits, in order to achieve a suitable pace and avoid burnout.” I find people like him have far more boundaries than the normal person. They say no to many good things that would deplete them so when they say yes to great things, they can engage at full power. Join me for a deep discussion with Nedra on the admitted difficulty but massive opportunity in having boundaries and how it doesn’t limit us to doing less but frees us to do far more. Her message on boundaries has caught fire and resulted in over a million followers on Instagram alone. I pursued her for this show because I need this message, and I’ve been making tangible changes in my life due to the message. You’ll hear us discuss specifics from her new book, Set Boundaries, Find Peace, which you can find wherever you get your books. Here are some show sponsors, then I bring you, Nedra Glover Tawwab. Why Live Events Beat Virtual

Thinking of attending or hosting a live event now that things are opening back up? You will want to hear this episode. The pandemic but a total stop to live events and everyone pivoted to virtual. There has been question as to whether live events will come back in high demand, or people will have realized they can get what they need virtually without the effort and expense of going to a live event. For those of you who host or want to host live events this is a big question. Tom Ziglar just attended five live events in less than two weeks and I asked him to join me and discuss it. He came out with 5 factors for us to consider in comparing virtual and live events. Ziglar successfully transitioned all their live events to virtual and as a business had great success. Give Your Body The Resources It Needs | Habits with Shaunti Feldhahn

We are back with Shaunti Feldhahn, best selling author and social researcher. Back in episode 901 we discussed her latest research on what creates true joy in us and she shared her latest findings of what is most destructive to our joy. In this episode we go behind the scenes to hear Shaunti’s daily habits for success. Just seven months prior to this recording Shaunti was diagnosed with breast cancer and during chemo started gaining a pound per day. Her doctor's response, “You’re not getting the sleep I advised, are you.” Addressing that turned Shaunti’s world upside down maybe more than the cancer itself and required her to ask if she was going to do what was necessary to help her body, or not. She also shares how the pandemic wrecked her exercise routine and how she pampers herself with what she calls, “beach read novels”, that she rereads. Find Shaunti at shaunti.com. The Power of Positive Relationships & Environments At Work

We look at our workplaces and our relationships with people and our surroundings, and how it affects us. I share a short clip from Zig Ziglar on the importance of healthy relationships and from the message, polled the Ziglar audience with this question, “How are your relationships at your work and how do you feel they affect you, for better or worse?” As Tom and I talked through the comments and people’s testimonies we also got into the literal environment of where you work. Your office, cubicle, even having windows nearby. The point is to bring to light the importance of having a healthy work environment and how it is absolutely affecting your performance. Thanks as always to everyone who commented on my Facebook survey. I invite you to join the conversation, just friend me on Facebook at agentkmiller. Learn more about your ad choices. How To Manufacture Joy In Your Life | Shaunti Feldhahn

Joy. You can truly, literally, manufacture joy. If you want big biceps, you work them out consistently. Simple math. So is creating joy. Happiness is momentary and based on circumstances. Joy is enduring and provides peace and calm regardless of the environmental pressures. I fear most of the culture has given up on joy and has acquiesced to merely seeking momentary pleasures and happiness like the next social media scroll, netflix show, and food or drink. But you are here because you want more. I bring you an expert. Shaunti Feldhahn. She’s a best selling author and social researcher. Keyword there, researcher. She is my guru on kindness who I refer to constantly. I had her on the show four years ago to talk about the research she did for her book, The Kindness Challenge. There are few people I refer to on shows as much as Shaunti. She has now turned her focus to...joy. She wrote a daily devotional called, Finding Joy. But in just a moment you are about to hear us set aside my intended discussion as Shaunti wanted to share her very latest research, since the book came out, on what she and her research team discovered is the number one destroyer...of joy. I mean, you really, really want to hear it. Because what you’ll find is, you are doing it. You are actively engaging, every day, with the number one inhibitor of joy. And it’s something you can take action on, immediately. Connect more at shaunti.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Friday Feature: Marcus Lemonis Wants One Hundred Percent

This is not an episode of The Ziglar Show, but instead, I’m calling it a new, Friday Feature. Maybe not every Friday, but taking the chance to showcase something new to you that I feel is fitting. A new podcast, product, or service. Today, it’s a 4 minute preview of another podcast I think you’ll enjoy, it’s called One Hundred Percent, with Marcus Lemonis. Marcus is CEO of Camping World, which was founded in Bowling Green, KY where I grew up, so I’ve always had a fondness for the company. Marcus hosts one of the most successful business shows on TV and when I heard he was launching this podcast I reached out for an interview, which I hope to bring you soon. He’s an incredibly successful businessman worth nearly a billion dollars, but what he’s known for is leading with his values of family, community, character and ethics, and it’s from this foundation, and his own money, that he helps small business owners who want his guidance. So in this new podcast, One Hundred Percent, that’s just what he does. When I listened to the first episode, which you’re about to hear a 4-minute clip from, it reminded me of Oprah Winfrey meets Shark Tank, in that Marcus goes straight to the heart in talking to entrepreneurs, how they got started, who inspires them, and the real why behind their business. Not many business shows have people crying in them, if that gives you an idea. His first show features a company with a product for mental health awareness and he brings on Howie Mandel, who suffers from mental health issues and is an advocate for support, and together they give guidance to the couple. Next episodes will feature guests such as Kirsten Bell, Gayle King, Charles Barkley, Kathy Ireland, and Al Roker, as together they talk to budding entrepreneurs. While you’re listening, follow ONE HUNDRED PERCENT WITH MARCUS LEMONIS on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, or listen early and ad-free by joining Wondery Plus in the Wondery app. http://wondery.fm/100PercentZiglar | I’d really appreciate hearing from you regarding me sharing this podcast preview with you, and I have another I’ll be sharing soon. 900: How To Have Faith You Are Capable Of More

You are not just who you are today, but what you can become, right? This is easy to say and monumentally hard to get any traction with. I play a five minute clip from Zig Ziglar where he tells a personal story of his own journey from a poor to mediocre sales person, to one of the best. It radically changed his life, and the catalyst came from one discussion with a man who simply expressed faith in him. We don’t even know if the faith was legitimate, or a tactic. Either way, it worked. I break this story down to the foundational aspects of understanding we have all simply agreed with expectations for ourselves that are limited. But it’s not a, “You are limitless and capable of anything” message. You aren’t and you can’t. That’s what gives motivation a bad name. Ultimately it’s you literally deciding to have faith you can perform at a higher level. Not with more effort, just...different effort. That’s it. If you were lucky, someone else will come along and say they have faith in you and you’ll believe it and boom...you’ll have more success. But chances are that mystery person won’t show up and it’s up to you to be that person who tells yourself, “Self, I have faith I’m limiting myself with expectations I’ve agreed with and the picture I have of myself, and I’m now choosing to have faith I’m capable of more, so...I’m going to try some new things.” Learn more about your ad choices.
