Every Day Older Is A Day Of Increased Power | Part 2: Becca Levy
#1005: I’m back with Dr Becca Levy to talk about Values & Habits in the key areas of life fulfillment, and look at how we have positive and negative perspectives and expectations around aging. And “aging” these days seems to be expected at earlier and earlier ages. To a great degree, we will age as we expect to age. So in this episode we talk to an expert around just that, the expectations we have and will likely manifest in our lives. Every day older we become, we should be adding to our ability. Yes, at some point late in life we may find some lessening strengths, but that is not a given. Animals are not hobbling around. They are full tilt till the end. Why can’t that be you and me? Dr. Becca Levy is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University. She has given testimony before the United States Senate on the effects of ageism and contributed to briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court in age-discrimination cases. She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. And she is the author of Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long & Well You Love, which just came out. Find it anywhere you get books and connect with Becca at becca-levy.com. I encourage you to listen to our previous episode, 1003, where Becca and I dig into ageism and how we can age better by viewing it more positively, and of course, taking more positive actions. Control The Direction Of Your Life By Controlling The Input Through Your Eyes | Functional Friday
#1004: We are talking about how to control your direction by controlling your visual input. What you look at is where you go. As we continue with the first pillar of overall physiological and psychological health and wellness, following the structure of Functional Medicine, Dr Randy James and I are talking about INPUT. The good and bad we do and do not put into our bodies. In episode #3 we covered the huge aspect of what we do and don’t put into our mouths. In this show we address visual input. This is not an area we give much thought or weight to unless we’re thinking of…looking at naughty pictures. In all truth, I expected it to be a 20-30 minute discussion, but as you will hear, some of our points really expanded. Just like the food we eat, everyday we choose or allow a steady and full diet of visionary input into our minds. We discuss the effect screens have on us, not just what we watch but the very real issue of blue screens themselves. Ultimately, we address what cumulative visual input is harming us and taking away life, and what is helping us and giving us life? We have control over the majority of this if we’ll take it. Videos, news, pornography, social media, ads and consumerism…there is a virtual-visual onslaught and reality in our home and work environment. I think you’ll find your eyes opened, pun intended, and your mind convicted. You can take immediate and significant action right away. How You View Aging Determines How You Age | Part 1: Dr Becca Levy
#1003: How will you age? Whether you are no in your late twenties or late fifties or further, everyone feels they are getting older. Of course we are chronologically getting older, so is a child, but we view children as growing older and better. Earlier and earlier these days however we view every day getting older as a negative and we are less capable. Should this be the case? And how is the negative view of aging hurting us all, no matter what age you’re at as you hear this. This is a big topic of interest for me. I’m 51 and feel more capable than ever, and want to maintain this as long as possible. So I brought on an expert. Dr. Becca Levy, Ph.D., is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University and held a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellowship at the Division of Aging and Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has given invited testimony before the United States Senate on the effects of ageism, contributed to briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court in age-discrimination cases, and participated in United Nations discussions of ageism. She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. How To Change Our Image Of Ourselves | Part 3: (Josh Peck) Tom Ziglar
#1002: We are talking about changing the idea we have of ourselves. Can we really? This continues the topic I discussed with actor Josh Peck, who grew up poor and extremely overweight. He found success as an actor and lost over 100lbs, yet testified his mindset about himself and life didn’t immediately change. I have Tom Ziglar with me to discuss this issue, how so often we pursue positive growth in our lives and yet we can often realize the tangible result of an achievement, yet not find fulfillment because we still retain our old mindset and mental image. And to something Josh shared, how much can we really erase the old image?Self-Help(ful) is presented by Ziglar, the most trusted brand in personal and business development impacting over 250 million people worldwide. What To Put In Your Mouth For Wellness | Functional Friday
#1001: To be fully well, or as well as one can possibly be, takes four key pillars. The first is the input into your body, which comes through your senses. In this show we focus on what you put in your mouth. As you’ll hear the good doctor Randy James say, so much of our lack of wellness can be tracked to, “What are we putting in our body that it doesn’t want, and what are we not putting in our body that it needs.” The struggle is, there are no one-size-fits-all answers. Just because one style of diet helps your friend lose weight and be fit and trim doesn’t mean it will work for you. But we can give you a framework and a structure that makes sense, and from it you can start discovering a healthy diet of what does and doesn’t go in your mouth for your best results. You will hear us address most of the main dietary trends right now and discuss the relevance of them. You will also hear much...compassion. Food is our primary drug and we can’t abstain from it, not for long. Our culture is built around food and two primary aspects; taste and convenience. But the truth is, food can be our greatest medicine. We are either eating to enhance our life or eating to enhance our death. So listen in for some truly beneficial guidance and some counsel you can take with you and take action on and quit some of the frustration and get results. Values, Motives, and Habits Roundtable | Part 1
#1000: A Values, Motives, and Habits roundtable with myself, Tom Ziglar, and Dr. Randy James to commemorate episode 1000. Thank you for listening, truly. With over 56 million downloads now that means on average, 56,000 people have listened to every episode. I’m truly honored. Values, Motives, and Habits. These are the priorities of our lives and how we strive to practice them. Tom Ziglar is CEO of Ziglar and proud son of Zig Ziglar. Most of you know him well. Randy James is a medical doctor and functional medicine expert. Both guys…I am so grateful to call my dearest friends. More than doing some work together, we do life together and I have spent time with both of them every week for many years talking about the things in our lives that matter, personally and professionally. In this 1000th episode we are having a chat over coffee to discuss what our Values, Motives, and Habits are in the seven spokes of the Ziglar Wheel of Life. I do this with every guest, but now I share the three of us discussing them together. We got so deep, we only made it through three topics and will continue with a Part 2. If you want more from either of them, find Tom Ziglar at Ziglar.com and Randy James at truelifemedicine.com. Esteemable Acts Build Self-Esteem | Part 2: Josh Peck
#999: Self-esteem is generally defined as your overall opinion of yourself and your abilities, or lack thereof. In this episode I’m back with actor Josh Peck to walk and talk through his personal Values, Motives, and Habits. Twice in the show he speaks of building self-esteem by doing esteemable acts. It struck me that we often encourage people to just think better of themselves, when they often don’t because they aren’t proud of who they are and what they do. So here Josh is saying, go be the person you would approve of. Can you imagine if someone said, “I’d like to think of myself as a runner,” but they didn’t ever run? I think you’ll enjoy Josh’s introspective and lessons learned. You can find Josh Peck’s book, Happy People Are Annoying, everywhere, and find him on Instagram along with his 13.3 million followers. A Framework For Your Individual Wellness Plan | Functional Friday
#998: What is the best, overall health plan for your wellness. There is one, but it is personal and it must be comprehensive. Nobody can easily or quickly tell you the exacts and specifics but we can absolutely help you with the framework. If you were building a car, you can be provided with the necessary ingredients you will need, like a frame, suspension, body, engine, wheels and tires, interior, etc… If you know that, you can choose the specifics that line up with the kind of car you want. For you to be as fully functioning as possible there is a framework of ingredients you will need. There is no magic bullet and one-size-fits-all solution. This episode is an intro to the framework that we’ll continue with in ensuing shows. Leverage The Advantage Of Your Disadvantage | Part 1: Josh Peck
#997: Josh Peck is an actor, comedian, podcaster, and social media star who has held lead roles in iconic television shows like 'Drake and Josh' on Nickelodeon, as well as 'Grandfathered' with John Stamos on FOX, and now 'Turner and Hooch' the series on Disney+. Josh has a new book out that I don’t think anyone but me would say is gritty, and I’ll say why at the top of the show. The book is titled Happy People Are Annoying, and I’d add that people who write as wittily as he does are also kind of annoying to me, but the laughs and the heart overcompensate for my envy. Through the recounting of a difficult life, Josh showcases insight that is almost easy to brush over, but we’re going to dig in today and help us all question our perspectives during challenges that help or hurt us. That’s why he’s here, his self-awareness that we can learn from.. You can find Happy People Are Annoying…everywhere. Which is kind of annoying. You can also find Josh on Instagram along with 13.3 million other people. A few more than I have. Also annoying… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
