Watchmen Sweeps Emmy Nominations & Major Changes To Theatrical Releases

Emmy nominations dropped this week, and our beloved Watchmen walked away with 26 nominations! Nearly all the major players, the cinematography, the music and more were rewarded with nominations this year. We dive into that, as well as a few other nominations that caught our eye as we begin what will prove to be a very unique awards season. In other major news, AMC Theatres and Universal Pictures cut a landmark deal following AMC's banishing of Universal properties after the VOD release of trolls earlier this summer. Now, AMC will allow films to be released on VOD after a shortened exclusivity window of just 17 days. This is a huge shift away from the 90 day window before it, and so we discuss just how much of an impact this will have on the theater-going industry. Is this simply an inevitable step that we're finally taking, or is there a better deal theaters should be looking for? Let's find out. This week's BlendGame has us looking at cliffhangers! We decide which film has our favorite cliffhanger ending of all time, and we even debate exactly what classifies as a "cliffhanger." Next week, we are debating our favorite movie genres, and giving our favorite movie from within that genre. Let us know you picks on social using #MovieGenreBlendReelBlend Premium! If you've wanted more of us each week, well now you're getting it. Dave Franco Talks The Rental, A Possible Sequel, Directing & More

Dave Franco Talks The Rental, A Possible Sequel, Directing & MoreWhat a special guest we have for you! Dave Franco makes his directorial debut this week with The Rental, starring Dan Stevens, Alison Brie and Sheila Vand. He joins us for a discussion on the shift from acting to directing, and what he's learned from the directors he's worked with. He also dives into some of the behind-the-scenes details of making the film, and the wonderful collaborators he had handy to help pull it all off. Will there be a sequel? He confirms that if audiences take a liking to the film, he does have a "strong" idea for a follow up, and even still, he and Alison Brie are interested in working together again on a romantic comedy they've been cooking up in quarantine. Also on this week's show, Tenet has been delayed (yet again). We dove into the prospects of nothing coming out this year on last week's show, so check out ReelBlend 126 for a larger discussion on that. However, some major productions have resumed which has given us a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel that, at some point, there will still be major releases to help bring theaters back from the brink.San Diego Comic-Con is taking to streaming their major events this year, obviously, so we give a quick preview on what's expected. JusticeCon, the fan-led event surrounding Zack Snyder's Justice League and that whole movement, is also streaming on YouTube this weekend, and our very own Sean O'Connell is attending as a panelist. Sean gives us a good preview of what fans can expect from the convention, and even gives a rundown of his panel's special plans. Finally, it wouldn't be ReelBlend without a BlendGame. Paul Greengrass has had a rather prolific narrative filmmaking career since branching away from his documentary roots, and so we went through our favorites from his filmography. Next week, we're taking a look at our favorite cliffhanger endings in cinema history. What's yours? Let us know on Twitter using #CliffhangerBlend. This Week In MoviesScoob! Hamilton's Oscar Controversy & Palm Springs Filmmakers Guest

Hamilton's Oscar Controversy & Palm Springs Filmmakers GuestPalm Springs director Max Barbakow and writer Andy Siara join the show to discuss the charming romantic comedy starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti and J.K. Simmons.Following Hamilton's release on Disney+, there's been some buzz around the realization that the broadway musical won't qualify for the Oscars next year. Do you think it should? Let us know on social. This past week brought us a trailer for David Ayer's new film The Tax Collector, starring Shia LeBeouf. The guys react to that, as well as the new trailer for Seth Rogen's An American Pickle. The film coming to HBO Max later this year stars Rogen as a man brined and preserved in pickle juice for 100 years, waking up in the present day. The trailer proved that the film may not be as completely silly as the premise might suggest, and so we discuss the under appreciated acting chops on display with Rogen's duel roles.Stick around for our break down of a few new movies hitting streaming this week including The Old Guard on Netflix starring Charlize Theron, the underwhelming Greyhound starring Tom Hanks, and our full review of Palm Springs. And of course, we celebrate the career of one of the industry's very best, Viola Davis. Reviewing Disney+'s Hamilton & Discussing The Future Of Movie Theaters

Reviewing Disney+'s Hamilton & Discussing The Future Of Movie TheatersIn another wonderfully 'host-full' show this week, we have a ton of news to discuss. Tenet is yet again delayed, major theater chains are also pushing back, and so that begs the question, "will we actually see a new theatrical release this year?" We react to new trailers for Pixar's Soul, as well as the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect starring the one and only Jennifer Hudson. Margot Robbie is developing a new Pirates of the Caribbean film with Birds of Prey  writer Christina Hodson, and for some reason we are getting a reboot of the film Twister. There's a lot to unpack there. Hamilton, the broadway musical from Lin-Manuel Miranda that took the world over, is hitting Disney+ this weekend, and we have some really strong reactions having now seen the film version of the show. You won't want to miss Hamilton, and you won't want to miss our reviews. Finally this week, we celebrate the career of the late Joel Schumacher with #JoelSchumacherBlend. Next week, be sure to play along on social, and send us your pick for your FAVORITE performance from the inimitable Viola Davis using #ViolaDavisBlendThis Week In MoviesDesperados (Netflix)Hamilton (Disney+)6:54 - Weekly Poll: Will Tenet get released in theaters this year?8:00 - More Movies and Theaters Delay Opening18:50 - Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson Developing Pirates of the Caribbean Film25:24 - Twister Reboot29:40 - Respect Trailer Reactions41:40 - Pixar's Soul Trailer Reactions44:04 - This Week In Movies46:44 - Hamilton Reviews1:15:05 - #JoelSchumacherBlend1:26:50 - Listener Review  Follow The Show HereReelBlend -  @ReelBlendSean - @Sean_OConnell Jake - @JakesTakesKevin - @KevinMcCarthyTVGabe - @gabeKovacs  Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reelblend/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Our Favorite Movies of 2020 (So Far) & Michael Keaton Returning To Batman

Our Favorite Movies of 2020 (So Far) & Michael Keaton Returning To BatmanWe are at the midpoint of yet another wonderful year of the ReelBlend podcast, and so we talk a look at what our FAVORITE films of the year are so far. It's an interesting year given the limited number of releases, but we've still managed to see some incredible films that are still taking our breath away. News broke this past week that Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to return as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming Flash Point movie directed by Andy Muschietti (the IT franchise). The guys give their general thoughts on this revelation, and look ahead at what a "multi-verse" of sorts might mean for DC's upcoming slate of films and characters. We are all incredibly excited to see Hamilton when it hits Disney+ next month, but the concern over how Disney might censor the musical has been looming over the project for some time. Lin-Manuel Miranda has set the record straight on what exactly is being cut out so that the film meets the required PG-13 rating on the streaming platform. Is this right? Do we care enough to bother worrying about it or are we all just happy to see it at all? Finally this week, we dive into some of our favorite films that we turn to when we just need to sit down, relax, and soak up that warm and cozy feeling some special films are able to impart on us. #WarmBlanketBlend received an awesome response from all of you, so we took some extra time to share the amazing stories a number of you passed along. This Week In MoviesEurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (Netflix)Irresistible (VOD)6:00 - Weekly Poll: What's the best movie you've seen this year?7:05 - Michael Keaton Returning to Batman22:13 - Hamilton Censorship Revealed41:23 - Our Favorite Movies of 2020 (So Far)1:13:30 - This Week in Movies1:17:55 - #WarmBlanketBlendFollow The Show HereReelBlend -  @ReelBlendSean - @Sean_OConnell Jake - @JakesTakesKevin - @KevinMcCarthyTVGabe - @gabeKovacs  Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reelblend/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Andrew Patterson's feature directorial debut The Vast of Night took the whole ReelBlend crew by storm, and we are delighted to share with you an extended, 45 minute conversation we had with him.
