048 - Mason: Free Cities at Sea, Atlas Island & Seasteading

Timothy Allen talks with Mason Leschyna. Today I have the first episode recorded at 'Liberty in Our Lifetime' 2024.  I had a number of conversations on my bucket list for the conference and one of those was speaking to somebody about Seasteading, something that I was fortunate enough to do on two separate occasions. One of those was with Joe Quirk, the President of the Seasteading Institute and the other was with today's guest Mason Leschyna, the brains behind Atlas Island, a project planning to create sovereign cities at sea. Now, I feel that I should pre-empt this show with a small plea to please forgive me for thinking out loud a fair bit on this episode.  Those of you that follow the pod will know that my preferred style of investigation is very much to find out about things in real life from real people, something that I believe allows you the listener to join me as I work this stuff out in real time.  So, if you’re a hardened Seasteader then there may not be anything new for you here, but if, like me you had a very specific set of beliefs about the viability of Free Cities in the ocean then I invite you to join me as I get me mind well and truly educated. Mason is a great ambassador for both Seasteading and the Free Cities movement as a whole and I can guarantee you that this is the first conversation of many as this project evolves in the coming months and years. Enjoy the conversation. LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE https://libertyinourlifetime.org/ TIMESTAMPS [0:30] Introduction. [5:44] What is Atlas Island? 047 - Nik Oraevsky: Bitcoin Predictions, CBDCs & Global Citizenship

Timothy Allen talks with Nik Oraevsky. Today I have a fascinating show for you about monetary and personal sovereignty with Bitcoin Reserve CEO, Nik Oraevsky. Nik wasn’t always a Bitcoin OG but his background in traditional finance has helped him to navigate the perilous regulatory environment surrounding the foundation and running of a Bitcoin company.  As a result he has excellent insights into the emerging world of cryptocurrency and freedom tech and indeed how to best isolate yourself from the barriers to freedom that he sees coming.  In this conversation we discuss, Bitcoin regulation, the war on cash, the impending bifurcated economy, carbon scores and CBDCs, universal basic income, A.I., prepping, digital nomadism, global citizenship, emerging governance models… and I get to ask an expert in the field: ”Is Bitcoin necessary for a Free City to thrive?" Spoiler alert: Nik’s answer might not be what you expect. Enjoy the conversation. 046 - Daniel Prince: Choosing a Parallel Life, Self-Directed Education & Bitcoin

Timothy Allen talks with Daniel Prince. Todays guest on the show is the long time Bitcoiner and friend of the Free Cities Foundation Daniel Prince. Daniel is the host of the Once Bitten Podcast which is one of the biggest and best known in the Bitcoin space. He is also going to be the MC at our Free Cities conference this year so I thought it would be a good idea to drop an episode in which I got to pick his brains for a couple of hours before you all get to meet him in person in Prague next week. In this episode we dive down a number of rabbit holes, but most notably we discuss the education system, vitamins, niacin, homeschooling, unschooling, nutrition and since we are both family men, there’s also a fair bit of banter on the subject of bringing up well adjusted kids and travelling with your family. 045 - Patrick Lamson-Hall & Nuria Forques: Designing a Free City from Scratch, Dreamers vs Pragmatists & The Future of Urban Planning

Timothy Allen talks with Patrick Lamson Hall and Nuria Forques. Patrick and Nuria are a husband-and-wife team whose firm, 'Fitted Projects,' was commissioned to design the Honduran ZEDE community of Ciudad Morazán, the second ZEDE established in Honduras after Próspera. While Próspera primarily focused on technological innovation and connecting Honduras with international business, Morazán was designed as more of a 'blue-collar ZEDE,' targeting working-class and middle-class residents primarily from Honduras. Patrick and Nuria have much to share about the design, implementation, and future of Free City projects. It was phenomenal to sit down with two individuals who possess such in-depth, hands-on experience in manifesting these innovative ideas in real life. This conversation was recorded during the 'New Cities & Network States' weekend at Zuzalu, the so-called pop-up city gathering in Montenegro. With many of the talks and presentations fresh in our minds, we ended up dissecting various projects within the Free Cities ecosystem and discussed how the movement as a whole might best progress in the coming years. 044 - Josh & Zach Harvey: Homesteading, Low Time Preference & Moving to Portugal

Timothy Allen talks with Josh & Zach Harvey. Today's show is a conversation I had in Portugal with a couple of Bitcoin OGs by the names of Josh and Zack Harvey. The two brothers were responsible for creating the first ever prototype bitcoin ATM way back in 2013, an endeavour that has given rise to their market leading company Lamassu, currently supplying Bitcoin ATMs all over the globe. More recently they have embarked on a inspiring regenerative agriculture project in their adoptive country of Portugal and this conversation helps to reveal some of their motivations and inspirations for not only moving across the world to a foreign country but also for immersing themselves in an experimental farming project. Something that is made all the more unusual by the fact that neither have any previous experience in that field at all. There’s plenty of advice here if you are thinking about embarking on a food sovereignty project of your own or moving to Portugal which as you will hear has many benefits for those looking to move countries in search of a better life.   Enjoy the conversation. 043 - Pavol Lupták: Global Opportunists, Parallel Societies & Crypto Anarchy

Timothy Allen talks with Pavol Lupták. Pavol is someone who I’ve been trying to talk to for quite a while… so many people have mentioned his name to me but he had thus far proved to be a pretty elusive guy on account of the fact that he is (amongst other things) a perpetual traveller.  Fortunately for me I bumped into him at BTC Prague where his company Liberation Travel had a stand next to the Free Cities Bureau, and I managed to sit down with him for a couple of hours to delve a bit deeper into his fascinating life. Pavol has been involved in the crypto anarchy scene in Prague for many years.  As the founder of both an ethical hacking IT security company and Prague’s Paralelni Polis, arguably one of the world’s most infamous Bitcoin and crypto anarchy hubs, he has a unique perspective on the ins and outs of creating parallel systems and opting out of mainstream structures. In fact Liberation Travel’s sole purpose is to help freedom minded people to leave oppressive situations and relocate to a better jurisdiction or become what Pavol calls a ‘Global opportunist’. Interestingly, something I didn’t know before this conversation was that Pavol has been visiting intentional communities and Free Cities projects for quite some time already, conducting personal research on different  governance models.    Look out for a couple of interesting projects mentioned in this conversation that I’d never heard of before and don’t forget that you can meet Pavol and all our other speakers in person in Prague in few weeks time at 'Liberty in Our Lifetime'. 042 - Kosta Korenkov & Albina Tokarchuk: Buying an Apartment in Montelibero, 10 Years as a Digital Nomad & Russian Libertarians

Timothy Allen talks with Kosta Korenkov & Albina Tokarchuk. This week's show comes from Montelibero which is a fascinating project that resides firmly within the ‘intentional community’ band of the Free Cities spectrum.  For the most part, comprised of Russian libertarians, Montelibero has a tight knit community with land and buildings in Montenegro as well as its own currency and decentralised governance system. If you want to take a deeper dive into the project you can check out our free communities directory at free-communities.org or pop on over to episode 29 of this podcast for a 3hr conversation with one of Montelibero's longer standing members. Back to today and I am speaking to a digitally nomadic couple who have taken the plunge and bought one of the newly constructed apartments in the so called 'MTL City' which is Montelibero’s initial block of building land.    Kosta Korenkov & Albina Tokarchuk have been digital nomads for over 10 years and this conversation is not only an interesting look into the motivations of people who choose to join an intentional community but also a fascinating peek into the lives of two traveling software developers. We discuss the process of buying property in Montelibero, as well as setting up with visas, bank accounts and internet along with Kosta and Albina’s tips for setting yourself up as a digital nomad…  What are the best jobs to get and where are the best countries to base yourself? All in all this was an excellent conversation full of useful information and inspiration that might help you to vote with your feet and find the jurisdiction that will be best for you. 041 - Niko Laamanen: Leaderless Organisations, Moving to Madeira & Bitcoin Adoption

Timothy Allen talks with Niko Laamanen. This week it's another dispatch from my recent visit to BTC Prague. My guest is Niko Laamanen, a Finnish gentleman who left an unfulfilling life as a construction engineer to start a publishing house specialising in the dissemination of content promoting ideas of freedom and liberty in all its myriad forms, or in Niko’s own words, “Stuff you don’t really learn at school but maybe you should.” Konsensus Network, as it is called, is a project that was born out of the emerging Bitcoin movement and has grown and evolved in a way characterised by the traits of what is known as a 'starfish organization', which is essentially, a leaderless, open-source network of collaborators... more on that, of course, from Niko in our conversation along with discussions about digital nomadism, ‘escaping the matrix,’ the importance of books and content curation, as well as Niko’s views on the progress of worldwide Bitcoin adoption and why he chose to move to the Portuguese island of Madeira, which has become somewhat of a Bitcoiner hotspot in recent times. 040 - Casey Given: Heterodox Thought Leaders, Free Cities PR & Young Voices

Timothy Allen talks with Casey Given. Casey is the president and executive director of ‘Young Voices’ which is a non profit agency that aims to cultivate the next generation of libertarian thought leaders in policy, journalism, and academia, or as Casey himself describes it, "A talent agency for heterodox thinkers". Casey has an interesting connection with the Free Cities movement through his undergrad student days and UC Berkley where he hosted a number of prominent seasteaders at the university's libertarian club which he founded. In this conversation we discuss Young Voices’s strategy for creating change in the media, both the legacy version and the new media landscape of soundbites and social influencers.  I’m also lucky enough to get some excellent advice from Casey on the best way to get the Free Cities narrative out there in the mainstream. All in all this is a grreat conversation if, like me, you are sincerely interested in having a direct impact on hearts and minds.  Many thanks to Casey for being so candid and accommodating with his time. 039 - Rahim Taghizadegan: Bitcoin Citadels, Geopolitics & CBDCs

Timothy Allen talks with Rahim Taghizadegan. Today on the pod I have for you a very interesting conversation I had at BTC Prague with the Free Cities Foundation’s chief economist Rahim Taghizadegan. Rahim is an Austrian economist who is actually from Austria, which was a first for me, but he is also a physicist (specialization in nuclear physics and complex systems), philosopher, investor and entrepreneur who has written more than a dozen books. In this conversation we begin by investigating the historical significance of citadels and in particular their modern day incarnation as the Bitcoin citadel meme.   From here we take a tour through many topics such as government inefficiencies, military technology, geopolitics, CBDCs and the collapse of the fiat system. All in all, I think that the whole discussion could be summed up quite nicely with Rahim’s statement ‘How not to live in a dystopian world'. Enjoy the conversation. TIMESTAMPS (0:30) Introduction to this episode. (3:23) The meme of the bitcoin citadel. (10:09) The difference between a citadel and a city state. (17:24) The origin of the bitcoin citadel meme.
