A to Z Dear Jack 19 | "Squished in Seat 23B"
Dear Xochitl and Jack,I recently found myself in an awkward situation on a flight. The passenger next to me seemed to have no qualms about invading my personal space. Not only did they let their arm spill into my seat area, but they also seemed completely oblivious to the discomfort they were causing. How can I address this issue without turning a cramped flight into a confrontation at 30,000 feet?Sincerely,Squished in Seat 23B"Qualms" refers to feelings of doubt, hesitation, or uneasiness, especially when it comes to moral or ethical considerations. If someone has "no qualms" about something, it means they have no reservations or hesitations about doing it, often implying a lack of concern for potential negative consequences or ethical considerations. In the context of your question, if a passenger has "no qualms" about invading personal space, it means they are doing so without any apparent hesitation or consideration for the discomfort it may cause."Invading personal space" refers to encroaching upon the physical or psychological space that individuals consider their own. This space varies between cultures and individuals, but it generally includes an invisible boundary around a person that, when breached, can cause discomfort or unease. Physical invasion of personal space might include standing too close, touching without permission, or, as in your scenario, allowing body parts to spill over into an adjacent seat on an airplane. It's a social norm to respect personal space to ensure the comfort and well-being of those around us. When this space is invaded, it can lead to feelings of discomfort or frustration."Confrontation" refers to a face-to-face meeting or conflict, often characterized by disagreement, argument, or even a hostile encounter. In interpersonal situations, a confrontation occurs when individuals address a problem, disagreement, or issue directly with each other. Confrontations can be assertive and constructive, aiming to resolve conflicts and improve understanding, or they can be confrontational in a negative sense, involving hostility and aggression.Podcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-dear-jack-19-squished-in-seat-23b/Social Media:WeChat account ID: atozenglishpodcastFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:14JackWelcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and today I'm here with my co-host social. And today we are going to do a would you rather question for the holidays and social today's would you rather is, would you rather get one big gift?00:00:32JackOr several small gifts.00:00:40XochitlDang, this is hard. It's kind of vague, right? Like is 1 big gift I think like would rather get one big gift at this point because.00:00:51XochitlI think when you're a kid, it's like quantity over quality and you're just impressed with your gifts and how many you're getting. And like, oh, I got 20 gifts. Oh, well, I got 25. And then as you get older, like, the quality of the gifts are so much more important. So I think getting a high quality gift that was thoughtful or expensive.00:01:13XochitlWould mean a lot more to me than several smaller gifts that I would just take up space in my house. Probably.00:01:22JackYeah, like when when they're in this question, we say big gift. Are we talking about just like size or like big meaning like expensive? And I take it to mean like an expensive gift, you know, versus several small cheaper gifts, but maybe.00:01:40JackIf you add up all the small gifts, it equals the same money as the as the big.00:01:48JackBut for me, like I'm I totally agree with you. When I was a kid, I would want more.00:01:55JackYou know, opportunities to open presents.00:01:58JackYou know.00:01:58XochitlRight. The surprise of it is like the suspense is a big part of it. When they're a kid.00:01:59JackIt's like.00:02:03JackExactly. It's just how many how many presents.00:02:06JackDid you get? I got I.00:02:07JackGot 7 presents. I got 9 presents or whatever. It doesn't matter if they're, you know, terrible.00:02:13JackIt's just like.00:02:14XochitlIt doesn't matter.00:02:15XochitlWell, and kids are just impressed.00:02:17XochitlI wish that I.00:02:18XochitlCould go back to being a kid and and impressed by like a stuffed animal. A slinky.00:02:22XochitlLike a? Yeah, a thing.00:02:24XochitlOf slime and a cheap art supplies kit.00:02:28XochitlI wish like that was like.00:02:29XochitlWow, I love this stuff, you know now.00:02:31XochitlI'm like, OK, that's pretty much just junk. It's just.00:02:35JackAnd where and where am I going to put this?00:02:36JackStuff you know.00:02:37XochitlYeah, exactly.00:02:37JackNow now I'm getting. Thanks for the clutter.00:02:43JackBut like you know, getting like a nice diamond ring or something like that, you know, would be that's something that you can, you know, it's it's something you'd want.00:02:52JackAnd and it's.00:02:53JackTable. Yeah, I you know, I I I agree.00:02:57JackI think just like one really thoughtful gift, one really one big gift is is far superior to a bunch of small gifts. That is just gonna that are just going to end up in a closet somewhere or getting recycled, you know, six months later.00:03:16발표자Right.00:03:18JackYeah, I think we, yeah, I agree.00:03:19발표자OK.00:03:23XochitlWell, what do you prefer? Would you like a several smaller gifts or one big gift? Let us know in the comments at A-Z englishpodcast.com shoot us an e-mail at at ozenglishpodcast@gmail.com and we will see you guys next.00:03:37XochitlTime. The A to Z English Podcast | Unusual Christmas traditions from around the world
Become friends with The A to Z English Podcast on WeChat!Account ID: atozenglishpodcastHere are three unusual Christmas traditions from different parts of the world:Krampusnacht in Austria and Germany:In some Alpine regions, including Austria and Germany, there's a tradition called Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) on December 5th. Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure who, according to folklore, punishes misbehaving children during the Christmas season. On Krampusnacht, people dress up as Krampus and participate in parades, scaring children and adults alike. It's a unique blend of the festive and the eerie.Catalonia's "Caga Tió" Tradition in Spain:In Catalonia, Spain, there's a Christmas tradition involving a character named "Caga Tió," which translates to "pooping log." A hollow log with a smiling face is propped up on sticks and "fed" by children with sweets in the days leading up to Christmas. On Christmas Eve, the log is beaten with sticks while a traditional song is sung, encouraging it to "poop" small gifts and candies. It's a lighthearted and quirky tradition.Japan's KFC Christmas Feast:In Japan, it's a popular tradition to have a Christmas meal from KFC. This unique custom began in the 1970s after a successful marketing campaign by KFC Japan, associating the fast-food chain with Christmas. Many Japanese families pre-order their KFC Christmas meals, complete with special holiday-themed buckets. The tradition has become so ingrained that ordering KFC for Christmas is a widespread practice in Japan. These traditions showcase the diversity of how people celebrate Christmas around the world, with each culture adding its own distinctive touch to the holiday season.Podcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/the-a-to-z-english-podcast-unusual-christmas-traditions-from-around-the-world/Social Media:Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. A to Z Dear Jack 17 | "Juggling Christmas Expectations"
Dear Xochitl and Jack,I trust this letter finds you in the warmth and joy of the holiday season. I'm reaching out to you seeking your guidance on a matter that tends to intensify during this festive time.As the holidays approach, the pressure to meet family expectations and create a perfect celebration seems to escalate. My partner and I often find ourselves torn between multiple family obligations, each vying for our time and attention. How can we strike a balance between our families' desires and create a harmonious holiday experience for everyone involved? I want to ensure the season is filled with joy rather than stress, and your insights into managing family expectations during this time would be greatly appreciated.Thank you for your time and wisdom.Warm regards,Juggling Christmas ExpectationsPodcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-dear-jack-juggling-christmas-expectations/Social Media:Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master.
