Dealing with The Personal at Work

If you have a spouse, if you have children, if you have elderly parents, you’re going to deal with stress outside of work. If you have a body, you’re going to deal with stress outside of work. It’s inevitable—stress is simply part of the human experience. But if it’s a constant in our personal lives, how can we manage it so we can do our best at work? What do we do if that stress starts spilling into our jobs? In this episode, I discuss dealing with stress from outside of work. I reveal why complaining about work and stress to your coach is natural and often beneficial. I explain what “allostatic load” means and describe the two ways of managing it. I also highlight the importance of self-care and underscore the value of meditation and journaling. “If you’re human, you’re going to have problems. If you have a job, you’re going to have to do your best. So, do what you need to do and remember to ask for help.” - Mark Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     Why a coach is a great person to have●     What “allostatic load” means●     Increasing your capacity to deal with stress●     How stress, discomfort, and challenges are part of the human experience●     Reaching out to others and seeking help Leader, It’s Time to Rise! Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of The Rising Leader Podcast. Speaking Truth To Power

It can be terrifying to speak your truth. When you find yourself in an environment where opposition is less than welcome, or you’re the breadwinner of your family, it can be difficult to point out flaws in your organization. Yet, sharing your knowledge can be beneficial for your company and yourself—and just like anything, it takes practice to move through fear and risk and speak your mind. In this episode, I discuss what it takes to speak truth to power. I describe the roles of self-worth and personal safety in speaking the truth in your organization. I explain why it’s important to cultivate goodwill, political capital, and trust with your boss and peers. I also offer advice on how to speak your mind when you feel trapped in your job and highlight how spiritual practices can grant you a sense of personal safety. “Learn to speak your mind and you’ll become invaluable.” - Mark Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     The Office Space and the value of speaking one’s mind●     “The Evil Machine Company” and why it’s important to say what’s wrong in an organization●     Laying the ground rules for disagreements and creating a safe space for speaking truth●     Maintaining your network and your professional connections●     Revamping your LinkedIn and updating your resume●     Why you should go to interviews occasionally Leader, It’s Time to Rise! Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of The Rising Leader Podcast. Skydiving In The Office - It Doesn't Have to Be Soul Crushing

Do you feel stuck in a soul-crushing job? Maybe you work in a corporate office or are an entrepreneur trying to build a business, but you no longer have that drive and passion that once drove you to push forward. In the corporate world, there is a stigma that all corporate jobs are – or eventually become – soul-crushing. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In this episode, I discuss the stigma often associated with corporate work and explain why I don’t believe anything has to be considered soul-crushing. I discuss how shifting your perspective on your current situation enables you to feel more free and joyful and the importance of living in the moment to set yourself free of these negative feelings. I explain how speaking your truth, asking for what you want, and setting boundaries can help you feel alive and help you reconnect with your true self. I also explain the difference between those ‘soul-crushing’ feelings and the desire to do something different, as well as how you can begin to live in the moment and start ‘skydiving in the office.’ “Everything’s an opportunity to grow. Everything’s an opportunity to be alive. And everything’s an opportunity to connect.” - Mark Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     The soul-crushing feelings and stigma often associated with working in Corporate America●     Why I don’t believe anything has to be soul-crushing●     How being present in the moment enables you to feel the immediacy of life●     How shifting your views and perspectives in situations helps turn those mundane, soul-crushing notions into feelings of joy●     The difference between soul-crushing feelings and having the desire to do something different●     What it truly means to ‘skydive in the office.’ Resources Mentioned: ●     Book: The Lion Tracker’s Guide to Life by Boyd Varty Grab Your FREE Copy: Only 10s Book Are you a busy executive or organizational leader? Introduction - Why This Conversation?

As leaders, I know you’re trying to juggle a lot. From learning how to balance the needs of your significant other, your children, your friends, your family, and – most importantly – yourself, as well as the demands of your job, your team, your boss, and your organization, it can be rather easy to feel overwhelmed. And while you’re probably pretty ambitious and are quickly climbing the corporate ladder, you’ve probably noticed that your skills need to grow and evolve as quickly as your responsibilities do. But once you have that title and authority, how do you continue to lead a team who all have their own ideas, ambitions, and perspectives, as well as their own challenges to deal with? How are you supposed to lead up, across, and down – all while leading yourself? That’s exactly what the Rising Leader Podcast is all about. In this episode, I explain what inspired me to launch the Rising Leader Podcast. I discuss how many entrepreneurs and corporate leaders rising through the ranks of their organization often struggle to find a balance between their personal and professional life and how our skillsets typically change as we move up the ladder of responsibility. I discuss how leading people who work for you differ from leading a team of other leaders. I also explain how there’s a common denominator in the skillsets we need to lead ourselves, our teams, our peers, and our boss and what you can expect each week from the Rising Leader Podcast episodes. “In order to be an effective leader, you have to learn those people skills.” - Mark Silverman This week on Mastering Overwhelm: ●     Realizing that your skills need to change as quickly as your responsibilities do●     How many ambitious leaders put their professional responsibilities ahead of their wellbeing●     How to lead a team of other leaders●     The common denominator between the skills you need to lead yourself, your team, your peers, and your boss●     What you can expect from each episode Resources Mentioned: ●     The Rising Leader 12-Week Program   Grab Your FREE Copy: Only 10s Book Are you a busy executive or organizational leader? Welcome to the Rising Leader Podcast

Welcome to the Rising Leader Podcast.THERE ARE FEW NATURAL-BORN LEADERS Leadership is a learned skill and learning is never-ending. “What got you here won’t get you where you want to go,” is an uncomfortable truth Fast Rising High Achievers run into at every level of their career. In fact, what got you here won’t even help you do your new job effectively. Every step up the ladder requires a new level of leadership and “people skills.” Because “people” are now your job. This podcast is here to help you master skills on four fronts on your way to the senior leadership team. LEADING UP – You are now a trusted advisor. That means you are a sounding board, speak truth to power, and help your CEO get their job done, all while getting your job done. LEADING ACROSS – You are peers are the power players in the organization. This is the team you are on. Your job is to lead from within that team while being a part of it. You are now a student of the Art of Co-opetition. LEADING YOUR TEAM – You’ve spent a career honing your leadership skills and now have even less direct impact on how things get done. Your success will only come from your team’s success. LEADING YOURSELF – Relentless pressure, ambition, burnout, sleepless nights, and resentments, are the price you may be paying for your lofty position. Mastering your emotions, perspective, health, and relationships are essential to make this fun and sustainable. The conversations, resources, and subject matter experts we will have is designed to help you “level up” in all four of these focus areas. Each week we will tackle a topic that will move you forward in your relationships with your boss, your peers, your team, and yourself. You will be armed with tools and insights you will use throughout your career and in your personal life. For more visit Mark J. Silverman's website.
