The journey to 2 x $100M companies with serial entrepreneur, WILD, Thinx & Tushy founder Miki Agrawal (part 1)

Today on the show we have Miki Agrawal, the serial founder behind some of the coolest companies you’ll definitely know; the first being WILD a gluten-free pizza restaurant concept she launched 18 years ago, Thinx, the period underwear company that totally disrupted how we think about our period care and Tushy, the modern day bidet. This episode was so damn cool, and I know you’re going to get so much out of this. Miki is the queen of disruptive marketing, we talk through how she takes a product and applies her framework to create intrigue and mystery which then creates buzz and more eyeballs. We also talk about what she did to raise millions of dollars and her advice for founders. And if you hang around to the end, we were lucky enough to meet her beautiful dad! Go check out the YouTube video on our channel.Miki is an absolute marketing genius, and her magic lies in pulling that intrigue and taboo element out of the products she is selling. Using that intrigue in a way that supports the clickbait or the interest of the conversation. You can really take anything and make it intriguing based on what you attach it to. It all comes back to creativity. Everyone is creative, we just don't necessarily spend the time taking the noise out of our brains to have time to think. People are so busy reacting to the world around them that they don't give themselves the space to be creative. Creativity requires spaciousness, time, and presence.Tuning into your creativity goes hand-in-hand with the changes in the narrative around things not being presented so perfect and crisp anymore. We're leaning more into sincerity and authenticity in 2022. This links back to the big rise in UGC over traditional commercials, something important to keep in mind for marketing moving into the future. Authentic recommendations and user-generated content perform so much better, commercials have started to feel phony. Do things DIY, and even if it's not perfect, that's the whole point. We are built for imperfection, that's the beauty of being human.I’m so grateful that you’re tuning in today and I hope you love this episode as much as I did recording it.Let’s get straight into it, this is Miki for Female Startup ClubLINKS WE MENTION:Miki's InstagramTushy's WebsiteMiki's WebsiteThe Artist's Way BookSave on your TUSHY purchase by using the code: STARTUPCLUB15Female Startup Club's InstagramDoone's InstagramDoone's TikTokSIGN UP FOR 1800-HYPEGIRL HOTLINE HERE: femalestartupclub.norby.liveTo redeem 1 month free of Norby's Basic Plan use code "FSC" here: https://join.nor.by/Learn more about Dymo at Dymo.comIn partnership with Klaviyo, the best email marketing tool for eCommerce businessesFemale Startup Club's YouTubeFemale Startup Club’s Private Facebook GroupSay hello to Doone: hello@femalestartupclub.comFemale Startup Club + Clearco: Clear.co/partner/female-star Hosted on Acast. 6 quick questions with Karen Danudjaja, Founder of Blume (part 2)

Today we’re learning from Karen Danudjaja, the founder of Blume.Blume is what happens when you pair the benefits of the wellness aisle and the experience of a cafe. They’ve bootstrapped the company to 10M in sales making your favorite cafe lattes with the magic of superfoods from Vancouver Canada. We’re talking through that first year of business and how she approached getting her first 1000 customers, bootstrapping the brand until now, and her learnings from her first raise of $2m.Something pivotal during that raising period is that Karen realized that she was someone who wanted to do everything. Save every single penny. So sales and customer service herself. In fact, every role possible herself. It's crazy what automation on just a few of those things came to do for the scale of the business. For example, when the first hire in customer service joined the team it made such a huge difference to be able to delve into strategy, sales, and development. You can never do everything, but if you surround yourself with people who want to help you succeed you're onto a real winner. The founder also delved into a couple of tips regarding their influencer marketing strategy. They found this unique audience that supported women and small businesses and wanted to be part of something from the beginning. This meant their ambassador community runs more of the business than meets the eye, they’re super involved. With this, you're able to expand by working directly with people that align with your brand mission. And whilst we're here, just a quick shout out to all the amazing humans listening into these episodes. I’ve been so happy and grateful recently about what we’ve been able to achieve together, all because you are tuning into these episodes and supporting the show. 6 quick questions with Zoe Marshall, Founder of The Deep Podcast on Fire (part 2)

Today on the show we are learning from Zoe Marshall. The founder and host of The Deep Podcast. From terminal parents to sex workers, extremists, and drug addicts, The Deep is a place for thought-provoking conversations that help us explore who we are, when no one is looking.Cracked wide open by her past trauma, grief, and abuse, Zoe holds the space for others to share their fascinating stories and perspectives through these deep conversations. I absolutely LOVED this episode, so much. We got down to the business model of how to monetize something that’s sensitive and sits almost in a taboo area. We also go through Zoe’s key learning in creating the show and her advice if you’re creating something that can be seen as taboo or even controversial. What I love so much about this episode is that Zoe is a real advocate for not doing it for the money. We've all heard it before. Follow your heart, not your head. Satisfy your passion, not your bank account. It can be frustrating to hear when the bills need to be paid, but there's some real truth to it. And that's not something we chat about enough on the show.Zoe's biz model with The Deep is essentially to provide great value to people. If more people followed this ideal, I think we, the planet, and our economy would all be a lot happier. If people see value in what you do, the money will follow naturally. Focus on your business and exceeding expectations, not how many figures you're bringing in. In the words of Zoe, don't be a slave to the dollars, and you'll be just fine. Come in clear with who you are, and what service you're giving the world and a lot of amazing things will come your way.If you get something out of this episode and you love it just as much as I do, please do share it to your IG stories and tag us @femalestartupclub! 6 Quick Questions with Lucy Goff, Founder of LYMA (part 2)

Today on the show we’re learning from Lucy Goff, the founder of LYMA. If you haven’t heard of LYMA before, it was started in 2018 as a powerful supplement specifically created to change people's lives by re-engineering nature to create products that actually live up to the promise and improve your health. LYMA fuses together wellness and technology, to lead the new WellTech category.Lucy started this business after suffering serious health issues and meeting a scientist by chance who helped changed the course of her life. We talk through what they’ve been able to create, how she garnered a 5,000-person waitlist before launch, creating a product so good that it’s organically endorsed by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber, and what approach they take to marketing high-ticket items. When it comes to the marketing piece, Lucy really opened my eyes to something I hadn't thought of before. Marketing historically was relatively simple. Now it’s much more complicated. Awareness is the key to having success long-term. If no one knows about your brand, no one knows about your product. It’s a really crowded space because it all goes through the same social channels to the same audience. That’s why you need to do something different. Understanding what doesn’t work and making those mistakes helps you understand what will work ultimately. One definitive point of difference is to be the first brand to disrupt and move the supplement category along, as LYMA is. A story such as this one is something that works brilliantly for scoring those first PR pieces. Lucy made sure to make LYMA an all-around PR-focused product ahead of the launch. Knowing that a point of difference would naturally lead to interest, they kept their pre-launch effort pretty innocuous and vague to really hone in on that FOMO effect. It is this strategy that guaranteed a mighty 5000 people waitlist before launch and their first 1000 customers. If you get something out of this episode and you love it just as much as I do, please do share it to your IG stories and tag us! Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Stephanie Lee, Founder of SELFMADE (part 2)

This episode is with Stephanie Lee from SELFMADE.SELFMADE is a culmination of Stephanie’s lived experiences and spurred from healing from her own mental health crisis. She began her journey as a field organizer on the Obama presidential campaign, and quickly moved to the White House where she worked for the First Lady Michelle Obama. She then changed direction from politics to the prestige of the beauty industry as a product developer at MAC Cosmetics in New York City. While dealing with depression and anxiety, she left the corporate world to travel the globe solo and hear from women about their experiences about their own self-worth and emotional wellbeing. That’s when SELFMADE was born.So much about our wellness has to do with our ability to self-trust, and turn into our self-worth, rather than look outside of ourselves. But our whole world and society tell us to look outside of ourselves. How do you gain that self-gain and trust? Beauty is something where women are already spending so much money, so much time. Women are already taking care of themselves. So why not use that to inject credible mental health? How do you fall down, be vulnerable, ask for what you need, and try again? It’s micro-moments. It’s not one moment, it’s a series of moments and conversations that helped Stephanie come to a point where she might have an answer to this. We chat a lot about the pitfalls of perfectionism in this episode, something close to my heart that we chat about often on the podcast. How as a woman, if you’re planning to be an entrepreneur, perfectionism is hugely common. We need to employ the idea that we can just put something out there and iterate along the way. So much of our paralysis comes from spinning in circles around certain things and running circles, whilst part of it is just putting it out, seeing how people react, and then changing it. Psychologically, perfectionism stops you from having to face failure. But it actually keeps you from moving forward. You should do this for youself and everyone who needs this. Not to be perfect. If you love Stephanie’s story and you’re building an ecommerce brand in the beauty space, you might be interested in checking out our private network where you can access modern mentorship from women on the show, like-minded women in the ecommerce / cpg space and experts.LINKS WE MENTION:SELFMADE's InstagramStephanie's InstagramFemale Startup Club's InstagramDoone's InstagramDoone's TikTokPodcast: NPR's Hidden BrainBook: Daring Greatly by Brené BrownTo redeem 1 month free of Norby's Basic Plan use code "FSC" here: https://join.nor.by/Learn more about Athletic Greens and get your FREE gift at Athleticgreens.com/STARTUPTry Zapier for free today at zapier.com/STARTUPLearn more about Dymo at Dymo.comIn partnership with Klaviyo, the best email marketing tool for eCommerce businessesFemale Startup Club's YouTubeFemale Startup Club’s Private Facebook GroupSay hello to Doone: hello@femalestartupclub.comFemale Startup Club + Clearco: Clear.co/partner/female-star Hosted on Acast.
