How Intentional Movement Can Power Up Your Public Speaking Part Two - 070
In order to realise your full potential and impact as a speaker, it’s important that you understand and harness the power of your body language and movement in your communication with an audience. Performers in every genre, can evoke emotion in their audience without uttering a single word. Whether it’s the arch of an eyebrow that makes the audience collapse in laughter, the arch of a body that communicates desire, or the arch of a conductor’s hand bringing an orchestra to a crescendo. As a speaker you can also use your body in harmony with your voice and words to change the state of your audience and move them to action. In part two of this series I’ll be continuing to share how you can use your body and intentional movement to increase your impact. Enjoy! What this episode covers: How you can choreograph your talk to direct an audience’s attention and emotion. Why it’s critical to keep your energy consistent. How to use proximity as a powerful tool. Mirror neurons and why they are a friend to public speakers. How you should setup your stage. Thanks for listening! From Page to Stage…Getting Bolder with Carl Honore - 068
Carl Honore started out his career as a journalist driven by a personal mission to change the world for the better. One day he realized that in his pursuit of making other people’s lives better his own was passing by at breakneck speed and he was missing the important moments. This epiphany set him on the path to writing his best-selling book ‘In Praise of Slow’ and spear heading the ‘slow’ movement which has impacted lives all over the world. It also meant that he had to face the terror he felt about public speaking and make the transition from ‘page to stage’. A few best sellers on and he is now an international speaker with a new book, ‘Bolder’ just out that deals with another fear of his…aging. In this show Carl shares some gems on the benefits of living more ‘slowly’, on how we should view aging, and gives a look behind the curtain at how he is putting his brand-new keynote together for Bolder. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. What we talk about: The 60 second Snow White book and how it changed Carl’s life. Why faster is not always better. How we need to marry the speed of today’s culture with the older, slower truths of what it means to be human Why the world cannot sustain the turbo culture of today. Why there is no such thing as a lost ‘slow’ cause. The top five benefits of slowing down. The story behind ‘Bolder’ and societies hang ups with age. The irony between age and wisdom being qualities looked for in running nations but not teams in business and why companies are missing out. The upside to aging and how we can age better. Carl’s transition from being terrified of public speaking to becoming an international public speaker. How perfectionism can rob you of fulfilling your potential as a public speaker. The process Carl goes through to prepare his talks. Why rehearsal is so critical to sounding ‘natural’ as a speaker. Why stories are crucial to speaking success and your origin story in particular. 8 Tips for Managing Anxiety Around Public Speaking - 067
This episode came about because someone contacted me for help two days before they were going to speak at an international conference to over 300 people. They were very scared and asked if I could give them some last-minute tips, which I did. It got me to thinking that maybe there’s others out there that would benefit from the same advice. Whether you’re leading your first team meeting, or you’re trying out a new bit of humour in front of a massive audiences, chances are you’ve felt anxious… and if you continue to grow, you’ll keep on feeling it and the buzz that goes with it… if it’s good anxiety getting you into perak performance state… BUT, if you are feeling so anxious that it’s making you ill, that it’s stopping you from sharing your message, or affecting the impact of your delivery… then it’s bad. I hope there’s some tips in this episode that will help, whichever scenario you’re in. Enjoy! What this episode covers: How to keep your talk in perspective. Why it’s not about you. What to do if you forget something. Why you need to speak more slowly The powerful body tips you can do to calm your nerves Why you should try to be likeable The right stance and resting place for your hands Have fun and be playful! The Shocking Truth About How to Open and Close Your Presentations - 065
You’ve probably heard me say before, that people’s attention is one of the hardest things to get, and one of the most precious commodities of today. As a speaker people might say you have an advantage because you’ve got a captive audience, but I don’t think that is true. With mobile phones and social media, with some of your audience potentially having been forced to attend, and with our decreasing spans of attention it’s still a massive challenge. That’s why how you open your talk is crucial because that will be what your audience uses to judge whether they will get more value out of listening to you then catching up on emails or sharing photos of the conference catering on Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram. How you finish your talk is equally important because, as you are probably aware, people are more likely to remember the start and end most easily… so this is your last big opportunity to influence the message they leave with. In this episode I’m sharing tips for starting and ending your presentations, and giving you examples to show you how it’s done and to spark ideas. Enjoy! What this episode covers: Why you shouldn’t squander your open and close on information giving. What a lightning bolt open and close is and why you need them. What your lightning bolt should do and take account of. What you should do before the end lightning bolt of your talk. Why you don’t just have to rely on words to get attention. Why you should use humour in your open and close. Why the last words of your talk are vital to the success of your presentation. Examples of opening and closes from Sarah’s talks. Good examples of open and closing from TED and TEDx talks. Thanks for listening! They cover all aspects of speaking from mindset to performance and I believe that if you use them in your public speaking then you’ll be increasing your effectiveness as a speaker significantly. Some of them are very simple, but in working with clients I’ve seen some of these small, seemingly insignificant changes have a massive impact… and often we experienced speakers forget some of the basics sometimes! This is essentially an overview episode to give you a heads up on each of the 10, and where I have done episodes that go into more detail on them, I have added the link to that show in the notes. It is so often true that what we measure gets managed and I hope that you will be able to use these tips as a checklist for your public speaking, so that every time you step in front of an audience they are getting the best version of you and an entertaining, engaging and valuable message that they can use to improve their lives or business in some way. How to Generate Leads in Your Speaking without Selling - 062
It’s very likely that everyone who speaks has something to sell…if you’re a business owner you may be using speaking to grow your business, or you may be a corporate leader trying to sell an idea or change, or a professional speaker with a side hustle to diversify your income, (whether that’s a book, coaching, a different talk, or product or service). It is also likely that you have previously been speaking at networking or corporate events, where it is not allowed, tactically sensible or appropriate to sell ‘overtly’. I often coach clients on the strategies they can use to make sure their audience pay attention, they deliver great value without giving all of their content, whilst at the same time creating the desire and motivation for the audience to want to pursue the relationship further and in this show, I’m sharing those strategies and tools with you. Enjoy! What you’ll discover: The three triggers for getting people to take action Which ones of those triggers are the most powerful. How to use the most powerful trigger to get and keep attention The importance of creating talk titles that hook the audience What strategies you can use in your talks to give value whilst leaving a gap for your products and services to fill. TransForming Perceptions Through Speaking with Joanne Lockwood – 061
In her own words Joanne Lockwood has traded being part of the most privileged demographic in society to becoming part of one that many people will either stare at or do their best to ignore. In this show, Joanne is sharing the story of two journeys…how she came to be an international speaker, and how she came to be standing on stage in a dress as a woman. Joanne’s early life was as traditional as it gets, joining the air force, switching to a career in IT with global travel, before starting her own IT business to spend more time with her wife and young family. She even became National President of the 90-year-old men’s club, The Round Table. But it was only in the past few years that in some ways she feels that her ‘true’ life began. It’s a fascinating insight into a journey that most of us will never take, and don’t really understand…but as Joanne says, my mission through my speaking is not to get you to understand, it’s to get you to accept difference, respect the person and be kind to each other. Enjoy! What we talk about: Why becoming a woman at 48 was something Joanne felt she had to do. How coming out as transgender impacted Joanne’s life, family and career. How much of Joanne’s own ‘self’ is tied up with gender identity. The reason we underestimate the power of words. What gender-neutral language is and why we should consider using it. How imposter syndrome and negative body image nearly derailed Joanne’s speaking career and how she overcame them. Why we should switch from looking for the negative to finding the positive. How Joanne has grown her speaking career so quickly. How changing reference points from top of the privilege tree to being at the bottom has impacted Joanne. Why the best speakers focus on creating an emotional connection that ‘moves’ people using stories. Why listening to people shows them that they matter. What micro-aggressions are and why we should be aware of them. Why you should never get complacent as a speaker and what can happen if you do.
