Mining In Papua New Guinea - with Matt Salthouse
In this episode we chat to Matt Salthouse, Chief Executive Officer at Kainantu Resources, an Asia-Pacific focused gold mining company with two highly prospective gold projects in a premier mining region, the high-grade Kainantu gold district of Papua New Guinea (PNG). We talk about their recent listing on the TSX and their relationships with K92 Mining. Matt has a background in law and has wealth of experience in the mining industry, so we chat about what's been happening in PNG with many companies facing challenges with the government. KEY TAKEAWAYS The legal aspect of mining always comes during the early stages, when operations must take a commercial, corporate approach to planning. Jurisdictions in different countries differ wildly, but there are foundational elements that remain similar across the board. Generally, more developed countries lead the charge on implementing new measures and legalities. In places such as Japan, benefits are carefully weighed against the needs of the population, and mining operations are far more selectively permitted to operate. In Papua New Guinea, the overall resource industry must be expanded. This is reflected in the country's eagerness to encourage outside concerns and infrastructure BEST MOMENTS 'If you take a corporate philosophy to it, it gives you a base to wrap a company around the project' 'All of these initiatives have a commercial aspect to them' 'People and governments should have a greater say in what comes from the benefits of projects' 'Clearly there is a desire to encourage junior exploration in PNG' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Kainantu Resources - https://kainanturesources.com/?page_id=1625 Matt Salthouse LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-salthouse-19134048/?originalSubdomain=sg ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. The Global Energy Challenge - with Frank Fannon
In the episode we speak to Frank Fannon, Assistant Secretary of State for Energy & Resources for the US government. Frank has a colourful background, working in both the government and in the mining industry around public policy with a track record of assessing complex policy, legal and regulatory issues around energy and resources. An avid listener of the podcast, Frank discusses the global energy challenges we are faced with and how he sees the global energy transitions unfolding and what this means for the mining sector. We also discuss the Energy Resource Governance Initiative that Frank and his team are initiating with global partners around the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS US mining operations are seen as an extension of diplomacy. Therefore it is incumbent upon all new global operations to act with care, concern and responsibility. Understanding a country's ambition and vision for energy is a key responsibility of Frank's department. Once this is ascertained, work must be done to bridge the gap between where they are currently, and how hey can achieve these goals. One of the main challenges is to convince the world that despite pulling out from certain climate agreements, that the US is still focussed upon delivering new, positive energy initiatives. Significant investment has been made in renewable energy sources. Simultaneously oil, coal and gas have seen a decline in terms of investment. COVID has seen an acceleration in both of these trends. BEST MOMENTS 'Companies represent the values of America' 'This is the era of energy transformation' 'Energy can be a force of cooperation' 'We have a whole new demarcation of time' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Frank Fannon LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/frank-fannon-26a384121/ Frank Fannon Twitter - https://twitter.com/frank_fannon?lang=en ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Improving The World's Environmental Systems - with Henrik Frijs
In this episode Rob talks with Henrik Frijs, Head of Sales & Marketing at EHS Data - a world-leading Environmental Data Management company providing environmental data systems to the mining industry. Henrik is an experienced environmental specialist who explains how mining companies can improve their environmental systems and processes through some of their technology, products and solutions. KEY TAKEAWAYS The main industries being served by EHS's data system are landfill organisations, which has now grown organically into the mining sector. Data is currently being used effectively to serve environmental concerns in sectors such as power generation, metal processing, smelting and other related industries. All mining has an effect upon the environment. It is the responsibility of the operation, under regulation, to adhere to the restoration and impact assessment of the production. Later, accurate reporting and measurement is crucial. Operations must seek to replace the more manual procedures that are currently in place. These restrict growth, and can never be an all-encompassing solution. BEST MOMENTS 'Mining is the main industry that we serve' 'Any mining activity is a disturbance to the environment' 'Data can only provide a platform' 'When we engage with a mining company, we know very well what it is, and can come with advice on how to manage the data' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes EHS Data - https://ehsdata.com/tag/henrik-frijs/ Henrik Frijs LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/henrik-m-frijs-1b09333/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. A Conversation With James Rogers Of Clarity Gold
In the episode we chat to James Rogers, CEO of Clarity Gold who are a junior miner focussing on the acquisition and exploration of overlooked and under-financed gold properties in around Canada. We chat about the junior mining space in the region, and about the company's flagship asset - what is so great about the Abitibi, and why this geology/location is important. KEY TAKEAWAYS Exploration is about thinking differently, and about looking for the value to be found in new projects and most importantly, new ways of thinking. The next milestones for Clarity as they move forward are to advance explorations by focussing efforts into high-grade projects. The junior sector in Clarity's area of speciality is thriving now. Deposits are attractive as are projects. The gold price is strong and Quebec is a positive environment in which to operate. The Coronavirus lockdown situation has not affected the way in which Clarity have operated, in that drilling has continued and cannot be done remotely. What has changed are the factors outside of the projects. BEST MOMENTS 'I'm a resource professional who didn't want to become a resource professional in the first place' 'My time is almost entirely spent with Clarity and moving along' 'We got more excited as we dug deeper' 'It's our job now to take this and expand it, and rethink the story!' Material Specialisation in Graphite with Shishir Poddar of Tirupati Graphite
In this episode we chat to Shishir Poddar, Chairman & Managing Director of Tirupati Graphite. Shishir is a fully integrated specialist graphite and graphene producer, with operations in Madagascar and India. The company has conditionally raised £6 million with institutional and professional investors and have recently listed on the London Stock Exchange. We talk about the recent float and more about the company. A few listeners wanted to know more about the graphite market so we cover this and why they are critical material in a number of sustainable applications and what lies ahead in the graphite market in the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS We chose Madagascar because it’s some of the best graphite available in the world with the largest crystal size. Only the London and Australia markets understand the graphite space and we are well connected to the London market and good support. Graphite is a crystalline form of carbon and its properties mean it has over 150 different applications. Each application has very specific requirements of the material meaning that the dynamics of how it is processed change. Our production is 80,000 tonnes of production per year and the global graphite market is currently 1.2million tonnes. There is a small amount of graphite in everyone’s lives, it’s in your phones, you cannot make steel without graphite or high-quality copper wire and the brakes on a car use graphite for heat dissipation. Graphite is around us in many different ways and it is in anything that requires thermal management. BEST MOMENTS ‘Graphite has very diverse properties and uses in everyone’s daily lives’ ‘It’s a material specialisation area’ ‘We have a vision of being a global leader in the graphite market’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Tirupati Graphite Shishir Poddar LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. The Challenges In Graphite - with Mike Venter
In this episode, we chat with Mike Venter, an experienced exploration geologist whose worked in a wide range of commodities from a corporate, junior and private companies, although he specialises more in Battery/Critical/New Technology materials like graphite and lithium and their impact on new energy efficiency and infrastructure. We discuss the importance of graphite in batteries, what are the different types found, and the challenges the industry faces. Also lithium’s role in batteries and what has happened with supply/demand more recently. We discuss other minerals like Magnesium, Nickel and Cobalt and their importance in the green economy. KEY TAKEAWAYS Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity, and fortunately it is relatively inert. This makes its applications numerous and much sought after. With the rapid growth of electric vehicles and portable technologies, graphite based materials are becoming more and more important to produce. China has traditionally been the world's largest producer of flake graphite, and they continue to dominate the global market in terms of production. Therefore they largely control the pricing. Whether or not the graphite going into anodes is clean is an ongoing area of investigation. Many companies are responding by producing their own anode materials, so as to reduce dependence on China, and to be able to create their own environmental trails. BEST MOMENTS 'Defining a graphite resource is all about quality' 'Graphite is the go-to material for the anode of your battery' 'It's all about quality, and being able to produce a product consistently' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Mike Venter LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/phmikeventer?originalSubdomain=za ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Attracting Mining's Next Generation - with Michael Moore
In this episode we chat to Michael Moore, MD of Golden State Mining who are an ASX listed exploration company based in Perth, Australia who have acquired a number of gold and base metals assets around Western Australia and looking to develop these in the near future. Michael is a mine engineer by background with extensive experience in Western Australia, and is also the director of the Camborne School of Mines in the UK, so we discuss what is happening with some of the universities around the world suspending some of their mining courses and what impact that will have in the industry in the future. We also talk about what the industry needs to do to attract more young people into mining and what are the key drives to achieving this. KEY TAKEAWAYS For previous generations, mining was seen as an exotic industry to be in due to its opportunities for travel and education around the world. This image seems to have waned somewhat, but we must revitalise it if we hope to attract the next generation. Mining takes place out of sight and out of mind for many. It is a distant industry that is not part of the common culture unless something goes wrong. We must do more to encourage visibility. New graduates should not concentrate so much on securing the first rung of the ladder in terms of career progression, It's far better to take the first job that pays and get started! Your first job in no way sets your career path. To improve credibility, we must ensure that operations are adhering to first-world rule and regulations in order to surpass expectations. BEST MOMENTS 'I realised what an important part of the economy it was, and how many opportunities there were' 'There's an inherent amount of ignorance in society about what we do' 'If you don't make the grade, these groups will not invest in you' 'Sometimes you're dealing with the president of country one day, and drillers the next day!' The blending of mining and technology has become the next great shift in the industry. More and more nowadays, science, technology and data are being used to refine and execute production with incredible results. Managing Balkan Mining - with Dominic Roberts
In this episode we chat to Dominic Roberts, Head Of Corporate Affairs at Adriatic Metals, a precious and base metals explorer and developer that owns the world-class Vares silver project in Bosnia & Herzegovina, as well as the Raska zinc deposit in Serbia. Dominic has a military background and we talk about mining within the Balkans and how mining is changing the region for the better, bringing with it a bright future ahead. He has been in the region for a few decades, and so understands the area well, explaining how to prosper and get mining projects off the ground. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vares is a world-class base and precious metal project, made more effective and efficient by the experience brought to play by its collection of experts, of which Dominic is proud to be counted. The principle opportunity in the Balkans is the geological opportunity. The Balkans is incredibly well-endowed with mineral resources. There are countless opportunities to be had beneath already-used projects. Adriatic Metals have seen huge gains by going even deeper and discovering more reservoirs of minerals. Regulations in the Balkans tend to be diverse and sometimes opposing depending on where in the area you are. This makes permitting difficult, but not impossible It's worth persevering as the rewards can be great. BEST MOMENTS 'It's so much more clearer how companies can progress from exploration to exploitation' 'That's when our profile began to rise at that stage' 'This is region with much room for knowledge and education' 'From the very start it's guided every decision to take the communities along on that journey' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Dominic Roberts LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-roberts-6004b314?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Water Management Solutions - with Jessy Parmar
In today’s episode we chat to Jessy Parmar, Business Development Manager for Xylem, who specialise in water management solutions across a number of industries with a big focus on mining. Jessy has developed a new Mine Water Management Guide and is here today to discuss solutions to mine water management issues that many mining operators face on a daily basis. KEY TAKEAWAYS Xylem is a leading water technology company committed to solving water by creating innovative and smart technology solutions to meet the world's waste water energy needs. Solution portfolios include efficient pumping systems, monitoring and analytic control solutions, environmental and quality monitoring, treatment systems, mixing equipment, and pipeline integrity management. In mining, water management is broken into nine different processes: sourcing, water boosting, de-watering, process water, dust suppression, fire protection, pipeline inspection, environmental monitoring, and waste water.
