Investing in Natural Resources: A Deep Dive into Mining and Energy with Rob Crayfourd and Keith Watson

In this episode we chat with Rob Crayfourd and Keith Watson, co-Fund Managers for CQS Natural Resources Growth and Income and Geiger Counter Funds, both funds which provide shareholders with exposure to a broad portfolio of mining and resource-focused equities, aiming to deliver both steady dividend income and capital growth. CNR has a focus on critical commodities (including base, precious, and battery metals, as well as energy and shipping) across a diverse range of geographies, thereby generating strong returns. GCL has a more targeted position, investing exploration, development, and production of energy, particularly Uranium. Last year the CNR fund won Investment Week’s Trust Investment Company of the Year, pipping Blackrock World Mining to the post. They talk about all 3 funds and discuss further around particular commodities, what happening geo-politically, the current financial markets, and the commodity outlook for 2024.  KEY TAKEAWAYS The funds focus on the energy and mining sector, with a particular emphasis on critical commodities, including base and precious metals, uranium, and energy. The funds aim to provide shareholders with exposure to a broad portfolio of mining and resource-focused equities, with a focus on steady dividend income and capital growth. Uranium is a key focus for the funds, as it has been the strongest commodity in recent years and is expected to continue to perform well due to increasing demand and supply disruptions. Geopolitical tensions, particularly in regions such as the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, can have a significant impact on commodity prices and shipping routes, which is something the funds take into consideration. The funds are cautious about the potential impact of rate cuts and deflation on the gold market, but they remain optimistic about the medium-term outlook for gold and believe that gold equities are attractively valued. BEST MOMENTS "We think central banks can be quite cautious there about cutting too aggressively because they don't want to see a kind of repetition of the 70s where they cut too quickly and then they see inflation coming back." "We're cautious on certain regions. The stands generally get a bit of a wide berth, but there are exceptions to that. Kazakhstan has been okay to operate in, for example."  "We're constructive on the space. We reflect that in the portfolio where we've increased the relative weighting. We expect central bank demand to remain strong given the geopolitical uncertainty, China dumping US treasuries."  "We think the names have kind of lagged at the back end of the underlying miners and the equities have lagged at the back end of 2023 with a bit of profit taking given the strong returns that they've delivered."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Mail:        rob@mining-international.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ X:              https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast  Web:        http://www.mining-international.org GUESTS Website: https://ncim.co.uk/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/geiger-counter/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cqs-natural-resources-growth-and-income-plc/ Fund: CQS Natural Resources Growth and Income plc: https://www.londonstockexchange.com/stock/CYN/cqs-natural-resources-growth-and-income-plc/company-page Fund: Geiger Counter: https://www.londonstockexchange.com/stock/GCL/geiger-counter-limited/company-page Fund: Golden Prospect: https://www.londonstockexchange.com/stock/GPM/golden-prospect-precious-metals-limited/company-page ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. From LinkedIn Discovery to World-Class Deposit: The Journey of Impact Minerals

In this episode we have a returning guest who appeared twice before in Nov 2019, (episode 51) and in April 2023 (episode 327). Mike Jones, Managing Director at Impact Minerals Limited, an exploration company listed on the ASX with four extensive tenement holdings within Australia, featuring significant potential for high-grade mineral deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper and nickel. A graduate from the Royal School of mines, Mike is a very experienced geologist across Australia and in particular WA working on over 80 projects both in greenfields and near mine exploration in a wide variety of mineralised terrains during his career and he gives us an update the progress on the company, results of the scoping study and metallurgical test results and an update on the Western Australian mining industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Impact Minerals is focused on the development of the Lake Hope project, a high purity alumina project in Western Australia. The pre-feasibility study for the Lake Hope project is underway, with the aim of bringing the project into production in the next couple of years. The project has the potential to be a world-class deposit, with a significant supply deficit of high purity alumina expected by 2026. Impact Minerals is also actively exploring its Arkan project, which has shown significant anomalies for nickel, copper, PGE, gold, and rare earths. The Australian mining industry has seen a downturn in certain commodities like lithium and nickel, but there are opportunities in gold and uranium. Financing for junior miners has been challenging, but there has been a recent flurry of activity in the market. BEST MOMENTS "It's always been my opinion that doing a small scale mine is a waste of time. It's a bit like that old quote, you know, it's not worth getting out of bed in the morning for less than 100 or 150,000 ounces of gold a year."  "We're now in the process of putting a mine, hopefully, into production over the next couple of years and being on the track to development."  "We believe that we can produce material much cheaper than anyone else. And that's a very good place to be in bulk commodities."  "We've got a significant copper only anomaly coming out very shortly as well. And we will be pushing forward with that project as well."  "The resources sector has just been a bit of a malaise over the last six months. Unfortunately, it's not getting any better at the moment because lithium and nickel are just completely in the doldrums."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Mail:        rob@mining-international.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ X:              https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast  Web:        http://www.mining-international.org https://www.impactminerals.com.au/site/content/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-jones-48831615/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/impact-minerals-limited/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. In this episode we chat to John Cash, Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of Ur-Energy who engages in the identification, acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of uranium projects and currently own and operates the Lost Creek in-situ recovery uranium facility in south-central Wyoming. John has nearly 30 years of experience in uranium exploration, radiation safety, regulatory and legislative affairs, uranium recovery operations, and international trade, as well as extensive management experience. Before joining Ur-Energy, he worked for established uranium mining companies, including BHP, Rio Algom Mining, and Crow Butte Resources, a subsidiary of Cameco. He talks about why venture capitalists are so hot on nuclear energy, the future of energy supply, uranium stocks and ETF, how geopolitical risks and project development challenges could constrain global uranium supply, and how to tackle the looming shortfalls. KEY TAKEAWAYS John Cash has over 30 years of experience in the uranium industry and has dedicated his entire career to this sector. Ur-Energy is a publicly traded uranium company that owns and operates the Lost Creek in situ recovery uranium facility in Wyoming. The company utilises in situ mining technology, which involves injecting CO2 and oxygen into the mineralised uranium zone to dissolve the uranium and pump it back to the surface for processing. Geopolitics plays a significant role in the uranium market, particularly with Russia's dominance in uranium refining and potential supply disruptions due to geopolitical tensions. The US defense sector may increase its demand for uranium in the future, requiring the establishment of domestic enrichment facilities to ensure national security. BEST MOMENTS "It certainly is an exciting time in the uranium space."  "The advantages are the capital expenditure is minimal. The environmental footprint is very small and the operating costs tend to be very low."  "Russia really dominates the world in those two steps with conversion and enrichment."  "We're going to continue to ramp up production at Lost Creek, working as hard as we can to do that."  "We would love to sign three, four, five more contracts within the first quarter to two quarters of next year."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Mail:        rob@mining-international.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ X:              https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast  Web:        http://www.mining-international.org Guest Website: https://www.ur-energy.com/ Guest X: https://twitter.com/ur_energy  ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
