Marna Cloete On Ivanhoe Mines and Business Growth

In this episode we chat to Marna Cloete, President of Ivanhoe Mines, a leading Canadian mining company committed to becoming a global leader in the supply of critical resources required to transition our world to a low-carbon, renewable future. Ivanhoe is focused on developing and expanding its four principal mining and exploration projects in Southern Africa. The development of the Kamoa-Kakula copper mining complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC), the Platreef palladium-rhodium-platinum-nickel-copper-gold discovery in South Africa, the extensive redevelopment and upgrading of the historic Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the Democratic Republic of Congo and exploration on the Western Foreland, near Kamoa-Kakula. Marna Cloete is a registered Chartered Accountant and holds a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Pretoria.  She joined Ivanhoe back in 2006 and has played an instrumental role as part in Ivanhoe’s leadership team, achieving a number of strategic milestones and continues to go from strength to strength. Marna shares her journey from starting with the company with only 10 employees to now over 18,000 and why Ivanhoe is leading the way in the supply of much needed critical resources. She shares her wisdom and advice for females within the mining industry and what’s its like working  and learning from Robert Friedland. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ivanhoe employs over 18,000 people across the organisation, and have all contributed to the slow formation of this mighty mining concern. One of the most important elements of Ivanhoe is the culture, that was established at the very outset some 26 years ago, when the team was made up of just ten people. Growing slowly has allowed their personal values and culture to grow with the company. Ivanhoe has piloted an electric fleet, where issues with efficiency were noted. Work has been done to remedy these challenges, and soon they hope to transition entirely to an electric fleet. Senior executives cannot hope to operate from afar. They need to engage with their workforce and operate on the ground alongside them. BEST MOMENTS 'Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think that I've been with Ivanhoe for 17 years' 'We were focussed on ensuring that we were supplying the next great copper supply' 'We've always tried to keep our structures flat and not too bureaucratic' 'It's important for partnerships to create value' VALUABLE RESOURCES   Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes https://twitter.com/IvanhoeMines_ https://www.linkedin.com/company/ivanhoe-mines-ltd/ https://www.facebook.com/ivanhoemines1 VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Benedikt Sobotka On The Green Energy Transition Space

In our 350th episode we talk with Benedikt Sobotka, CEO of Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), one of the world's leading and most diversified companies in mining and processing of natural resources, with fully integrated energy, transportation and marketing operations. The Group is represented in 16 countries of the world on four continents and is one of the largest employers in the industry. Benedikt has extensive experience in the mining and energy sectors, holding various management & executive positions some of the leading companies in the world. He is also the co-chair of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA), where ERG is a Founding Member and has developed a close partnership with the World Economic Forum, taking an active role in many industry groups and wider initiatives. We discuss some of the important issues and topics in our industry and how ERG deals with these challenges in the EGG and green energy transition space. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mining's public facing side has changed dramatically in the last ten years. It has gone from being a perceived shady sector, into one that provides hope and progress for future generations and their technologies. New technologies such as AI and geospatial reconnaissance are helping to make mining safer and more efficient, as well as more productive. The total mining sector spends somewhere in the regions of 150 billion dollars per year on production, which is a fraction of what the oil industry spends on production. Exploration is just that, and mining has dared to unearth some of the world's most precious resources int he most hazardous of environments. Operations must be conducted on a bespoke level, and regulations adhered to. BEST MOMENTS 'I made all the mistakes you could make' 'Technology will be at the core of meeting demand for the energy transition' 'You need projects in frontier countries to deliver these materials' 'The good projects are in predominantly more complicated regions' VALUABLE RESOURCES   Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Benedikt Sobotka LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/benedikt-sobotka-8a1847169/?originalSubdomain=lu VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Gene Morgan On Lithium Production

In this episode we chat to Gene Morgan, Founder and CEO of Zelandez, who are experts in Lithium Brine-field Technology Services whose purpose is to accelerate lithium supply, which is why Zelandez provides cutting-edge technology that helps develop lithium brine resources faster and produce more profitably. Gene has a mechanical background and worked in the Oil & Gas sector with SLB before starting Zelandez back in 2016 and talk about his journey and how they help Lithium companies who are either in exploration or production with their technology. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lithium supply is provided by Zelandez through cutting edge technology, everything from geophysical logging, to resource and feasibility studies. Lithium brine is the resource with the lowest cost to production, but it's also the slowest speed to production, taking around 7 years to harvest. Lithium coming from the South American brines is similar to oilfield exploration and development, meaning that you are essentially producing what is a fluid resource from an underground reservoir. Zelandez started with the premise that oilfield technologies and methodologies could be applied to brine exploration and production, so a heavy focus on below ground is the foundation of thinking. BEST MOMENTS 'Our first thought is always, how can we save the client time?' 'As a company, we are passionate about lithium' 'I entered into lithium as a result of love and oil' 'The internal combustion engine's days are numbered' VALUABLE RESOURCES   Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Gene Morgan LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/gene-morgan-5b5a104a?originalSubdomain=bo VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Tony Moreau On What Makes Mining Great

In this episode we chat to Tony Moreau, CEO and director of American Eagle Gold, a junior miner focused on exploring for world-class gold and copper deposits in North America, namely its flagship asset… NAK copper-gold property located in British Columbia. Tony is a Chartered Financial Analyst, and worked in a variety of position’s for IAM Gold, most recently Business Development and Innovation. Apart from his role with American Eagle Gold, he also leads the Young Mining Professionals Toronto Chapter and is the Co-Chair of the YMP Scholarship Fund. We had an interesting chat around the company but also some of Tony’s experience and encounters with senior leaders of our industry, showing what a great industry the mining industry is. So please share this episode to others outside of the mining industry because its not what they think as you will discover from listening to this episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Just because you hit stumbling blocks every now and then doesn't mean you can't pull it back. American Eagle saw its value fall, but success revamped its fortunes almost overnight. When people think of British Columbia they think of the Golden Triangle, but there is far more to the area than just this area. The problem with finding miners in their specified areas is that competitors will hire workers at a very high rate, pushing up the average costs of hire for all other companies. The two main rules about junior mining are that you must first look after your structure, and secondly if you have to fail, then do it fast. BEST MOMENTS 'We got a Pulp Fiction shot of adrenaline' 'We've got a lot of blue sky ahead, and a lot of great property' 'It's all about reserve replacement' 'The biggest challenge is to keep yourself in the news and have people know who you are' VALUABLE RESOURCES   Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes  Website: www.Americaneaglegold.ca Twitter: https://twitter.com/ameaglegold Email: amoreau@americaneaglegold.ca VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ian Wilson On How To Achieve Maximum Output

In this episode we chat to Ian Wilson, founder and president of Makuri Technology who specialise in the design, manufacture, and supply of high-performance wear liner systems to optimise the front end of hard rock mining process plant, serving a global customers base Ian is a mining and business professional who’s worked for the largest multinational mining companies with a background in maintenance, engineering, operations, business development and executive management. Founding the company, Ian tells us more about how they help mining companies achieve maximum output using their equipment, technology and processes. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of the main challenges in working in developing countries is maintaining sustainability and managing local communities. When the job gets too broad it can mean that our talents are spread too thin. It's always best to focus on the niche we can do better than anyone else. Sometimes, gaps in the market can become the niches of companies. They fill the gaps and become known for that very thing. Makuri would love to work with design and procurement companies, in order to introduce better technology from day one, but the bidding wars always seem to win out. Lithium and Graphite Supply for a Sustainable Future with Belinda Labette

In this episode we have a returning guest who appeared in January 2022 (Episode 203). Belinda Labatte, CEO and Director of Lomiko Metals who are a Canadian junior exploration and development company with properties in Quebec, focused on the development of a graphite and Lithium project. Belinda has more than 15 years of senior management experience in mining and 20 years in the capital and investment markets and gives us an update on the company, what the companies outlook is over the next 6-12 months and what the Canadian battery market is like at the moment. KEY TAKEAWAYS We need to look at mining in a different way and strategic minerals is all about securing a domestic supply chain for these minerals for a future with renewable energy as well as geopolitical security. Various products can come out a graphite mine depending in the flake distribution, if the flakes are fine they can then be used for SPG graphite for the electrical vehicle market. Graphite is looking at gaining a 30-40% increase in demand but the supply is not there to meet it. Lomiko Metals is at the phase where they will generate the supply needed, they don’t want to push out anything that isn’t needed or wanted in the market. BEST MOMENTS 'I have a real appreciation for the opportunities that the raw natural resources can bring into a community and a country’ ‘The gap is going to be widening between supply and natural flake graphite and right now’ ‘For us, it’s really about creating that anode product that is suitable for a very specific us and a very specific demand or supply profile’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes  Tim Moody LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-moody-72065bb/?originalSubdomain=uk VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. The Sunnyside Project - with Rick Trotman

In the episode we chat to Rick Trotman, President and CEO of Barksdale Resources, a junior miner who are acquiring, exploring, and de-risking high quality precious and base metal projects in the Americas and have assets in southern Arizona, and Mexico. Rick is a geologist by background working for the likes of Barrick and Yamana Gold before moving into securities and private equity before taking the helm at Barksdale Resources over 5 years ago. He talks about their exciting Sunnyside project which is in the same region as South32’s Taylor Hermosa project and what the company has to offer from an investment prospective. KEY TAKEAWAYS Working in and around the finance sector can be invaluable in mining, as it helps to understand the investment point of view. Barskdale is abase metal exploration company focussed primarily in the desert of the south west and Northern Mexico. Having a co-mining neighbour that is aggressive on spending and pushing a project towards development is key to achieving purposes and goals. People are at the heart of mining, which means that inevitably, politics matter at some point in the life of any project. An Overview Of Southern Gold - with Robert Smillie

In the episode we chat to Rob Smillie, MD of Southern Gold, an exploration company exploring for precious metals in South Korea. They have a highly experienced team with a track record of exploration success in Asia, Australia and Eastern Europe and have a growing Brownfields and Greenfields exploration portfolio they are developing. Rob is an experienced management and exploration professional, with over 30 years of experience, including significant epithermal gold exploration, and is particularly working in Asia for the likes of OK Tedi, Calibre Mining and Oceana Gold. Rob gives us an overview of the company and what they are up to and what’s South Korea like as a mining jurisdiction which many of you maybe surprised. KEY TAKEAWAYS Robert's experience has taken him from greenfield exploration to mining, all along the mining sector spectrum, making him well placed to act in any area of the business. South Korea's mineral potential is hugely attractive, and is massively unexplored by modern day standards. The mining business is a very small part of the economy in South Korea, and the rapid industrialisation means that high tech manufacturing is a vital part of the country's growth. There are a number of brownfields and greenfields projects under Southern Gold's belt. The main mine was mined over several levels to around 250 metres. BEST MOMENTS 'It's been a really great career and I've met a lot of tremendous people' 'What attracted us to South Korea was the potential' 'The mining industry has become a small scale industry' 'Despite being a great asset, this has very few holes in it' VALUABLE RESOURCES   Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Website: https://www.southerngold.com.au/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/southern-gold-limited Twitter: https://twitter.com/SouthernGoldASX Robert Smillie, Managing Director & CEO - rsmillie@southerngold.com.au VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
