When we have a deeper understanding of our emotions, which I feel mindfulness has helped me do, we can really understand our emotions better. It's given me a much deeper understanding of what I'm feeling and how to be present with whatever emotion I'm experiencing. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is the greatest gift because it reminds us that we're alive and that we're here and that we're breathing and so, therefore, we're alive. I highly recommend people connect with their breath whether they're sitting in meditation or you need to just stop while you're sitting at your desk working and take a couple of deep breaths in and out. It's the greatest anchor, it regulates. One day I was in the cafeteria. I was eating my lunch that my mom had made for me. This kid came over and grabbed my hair and yanked my head back. He yelled at me, “why are you looking at me like this”. I wasn't looking at him. He said, “you wanna fight?” I was a skinny little guy of 110 pounds and I didn't want to fight. So he had his friends with him and he dragged me by the hair, out of the cafeteria, all the way out to the playground area. This happened in front of a lot of people because it was lunchtime. Then he beat the crap out of me. He had me on the ground and was kicking me. Then he yelled, “don't you look at me again.” Then he made some racist comments and walked away. I was crying and there were bruises and blood. I was so afraid. I went home to my mom and she asked me why I got into fights. I didn't even want to explain. I was getting beat up for no reason. I didn't know the language and I had no friends. There was a lot of resentment and a lot of anger. It was a very difficult time. I don't get angry or irritated in the sense that I was before. [Back then] I could get angry about nothing and everything within a matter of seconds when I was younger. It's very, very hard to make me irritated or angry nowadays because I know that in the end it just affects yourself. Thoughts on Breathing I don't focus on breathing on a day-to-day basis. I do meditate; that's the first ingredient to calming your mind. When I do meditations I focus only on the breathing for the first 10 to 15 minutes before I even start with visualizations or images of construction of future events. Breathing in and holding in your breath for three seconds is what I usually do and then I count to three and I let it out and count to three. There's always a number three in my head.
