Transform Broken Relationships Using Mindfulness

Transforming broken relationships using mindfulness is the topic today because my listener, Monica, responded to my request on a previous show. I asked listeners to send in show topic requests and then I'd send out a Mindfulness Mode mug to the person who submitted the topic I chose. That is Monica. Mindfulness Helps Having interviewed over 600 guests for Mindfulness Mode, I’ve certainly gained a lot of expertise on how mindfulness can help a lot of aspects of your life. I don’t consider myself a relationship expert, but I do know that mindfulness can make a huge difference when interacting with people and when building and growing relationships. Thinking way back, I remember my first wife getting really angry with me and taking off her ring, dropping it in my shirt pocket, and then telling me in no uncertain terms what I could do and where I could go. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify If I had known then what I know now, I would have handled the situation completely differently. What led up to that emotional explosion, would have been different too. I would have used my mindfulness skills to be better connected so that she knew I had no intention of being a schmuck. In spite of that memory, the marriage was mostly positive with very few disagreements. The reason the marriage ended was not because we didn’t get along. I’ve now been married over 20 years to an amazing woman and the mother of our son. She’s taught me a lot about relationships and, interestingly, so has my son. You Can Improve Your Skills Mindfulness definitely takes a central role in what I’ve learned about making relationships work. Here are seven important points about using mindfulness to improve broken relationships. 1/ Believe in You - You are enough, you are a gift, you are meant to be here, you are talented and valuable. Learn to love yourself and your relationships will prosper. 2/ Listen with your whole self – Listen with your eyes, with your body language, with your words. Repeat things back, practice every day being a great listener. 3/ Be A Giver (Give 110%) - Giving is what feeds us. Have you ever noticed that if you are feeling down and you decide to help someone or be a giver, then you immediately start to feel better? It’s true. Being a giver helps you and the other person. Learn To Forgive 4/ Forgive – If you’re not able to forgive people for things, you probably aren’t able to forgive yourself for some of the things you’ve done. We traditionally think that forgiving is for the other person, but it is actually a huge benefit to you. Forgiveness allows you to let go of anger and pain that has been holding you back. 5/ View others with compassion. – If you pay attention to your inner voice, you will notice that you sometimes judge others or situations and you may be missing some compassion at times. If you practice viewing everyone and everything with compassion, your relationships will begin to change. The way you think will begin to change. You will start to feel more fulfilled, more content, and happier. 6/ Honesty – Be honest with yourself. When making commitments to yourself, don’t cheat. Be true to yourself. Being truly honest with others will help your relationships as well. Practice being more honest in your life and it will have huge benefits. 7/ Practice Gratitude – Be grateful, even for the little things. Sometimes we dwell on what is going wrong, or what is holding us back, and we might say to ourselves, I don’t have anything to be grateful for right now. Step back a bit and be thankful. Consider using a gratitude journal. Write down 5 things you’re grateful for every morning when you first wake up. Conclusion If I had known these seven Mindfulness Tips about relationships, my ex-wife would never have dropped her ring in my shirt pocket, and life would have been different. But it’s not too late for YOU to make a difference with your relationships and start practicing these tips every day. As a result of being bullied, I can very easily shut myself off as a protection mechanism. That's something that I've had to work with. As soon as I get into an argument with somebody, I can shut off, so it doesn't matter what you say to me, it's not going to hurt. Then I can come back, [saying] you're not going to hurt me because I've cut myself off. I'm going to be the one who's going to hurt you. That's the way that I've grown up as a way to keep myself safe. For me, mindfulness is realizing that the other person is a person. How Mindfulness and Hypnosis Connect

Hypnosis, much like mindfulness, is a powerful state of focused awareness. Mindfulness can be used to become more grounded and more content. Hypnosis is a specific tool that can help uncover and dissolve the root cause of many issues people suffer from every day. Hypnosis allows you to access healing resources within the subconscious mind, promoting natural healing from within. Hypnosis is used to help people discover the subconscious reasons for their symptoms, behaviors, or habits. When these reasons are discovered, certain tools and techniques are used to help release them and relearn a new positive way of thinking, subconsciously. Hypnosis has been sanctioned and used by the medical community since 1958 to help patients overcome chronic pain, create anesthesia, and heal psychogenic illnesses. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Mindfulness Connection To Hypnosis Mindfulness will teach you to live in the moment, focus on your breathing, and realize the value of gratitude. Through mindfulness, I have learned to experience a state of focused awareness and daily meditation has improved my life greatly. As a result of meditation, I feel more grounded, more focused, and definitely more connected to my emotions. Hypnosis can be used in the form of self-hypnosis or a hypnotist can help you achieve a state of hypnosis and deal with issues that are holding you back. Effect on Emotions Hypnosis can help you become more aware of your emotions and deal with specific issues that are causing you to be stuck or frustrated. Many people have used hypnosis successfully to change mind blocks and move forward in life in order to fulfill their goals and dreams. The Magic of Connection With Peter Gibb

Peter Gibb grew up as an introvert who yearned to be an extrovert, then learned over the years that good communication has little to do with introversion and extroversion. He has spoken and consulted on Mindful Conversation in 18 countries and 3 languages over a  30 year period. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Mindful Conversation: The Magic of Connection and the memoir King of Doubt, which deals with his own struggles with self-doubt and Imposter Syndrome. Peter lives in Ashland, Oregon, USA. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.PeterGibb.org Blog: www.PeterGibb.org/blog/ Peter Gibb's next class Spring 2021 at Southern Oregon University: www.olli.sou.edu Book: King of Doubt by Peter Gibb Importance of Humor in Your Life I love humor. Humor makes me feel alive and humor is a way of connecting. Humor is also very personal. What's humorous to me, may not be to you. I find that when I am most alive, my sense of humor just shows up. I never know when it's going to show up. I'm not a big joke teller. Just the joy of seeing that and not passing judgment on it but just noticing it. I love it when other people's sense of humor shows up and when mine shows up and then we can play on that stage. Thoughts About Courage I think fear is stopping a lot of people from having mindful conversations. I'm afraid that if I show you who I really am, you're going to say get out of here. We're all vulnerable. I struggled for years and years and wrote about it in King Of Doubt, with what I called Imposter Syndrome. It was years before I had the courage to say, “I'm going to share, and put content out there, and I hope you like it, but if you don't, I'll survive.” I'd rather share who I am and have you say, you're just not my kind of guy. My experience is, when I share who I really am, I far more often connect and people do like me, than if I'm playing some sort of a game. But it takes a lot of courage to believe that and to put yourself out there. Suggested Resources Book: King of Doubt by Peter Gibb App: n/a Bullying Story I was not the subject of the bullying, but I got very close to it. In my coaching and consulting around Mindful Conversation, I worked in a lot of different companies and government agencies and I worked in a hospital for about a year. I remember one day in particular, the medical Chief of Staff came to me and he said, “I want you to work with this particular doctor. He is our best orthopaedic surgeon and we're having a terrible time with him.” Even patients don't want to see him. And nurses are refusing to work with him. I want you to help him. I met with him and I talked to him about why I thought this was important. All the coaching I did didn't have any impact at all. This guy was a horror in the operating room where you need to work really closely together. He considered himself the King of the operating room and he was a horrible bully. I was about to give up but I finally decided to set up a time when I would bring in some of the nurses and ask them to just tell what it was like to work with him. Most nurses did not want to do it, but I finally found four nurses who would come and talk with him. I set up some ground rules to make it as safe as possible. We had a really profound understanding because I really encouraged everybody, don't respond, I just want you to listen. Then I want you to repeat back what you heard. You can totally disagree with it. The meeting lasted about an hour and a half. At the end of the meeting I dismissed the nurses and I turned to him and I said, “What do you think?” He broke down in tears. He said, “I don't want to be that kind of man. Help me to change.” I was so moved by that. This was a bully to the nth degree. That was his persona. Because these four nurses had the courage to be vulnerable and to say, “this is my experience when I'm around you”, it changed that doctor's life. It was one of my bosses in the past. It was one of the first jobs in the United States. When I started to work there I was really happy and then things started to look really odd. Business-wise, this guy was successful, but he was saying things that were really weird. He was bragging about listening to people's opinions just because then he could convince them how wrong they were. At the beginning I thought it was just a joke or a salesy type of speaking. Then at some point I realized that people were coming out of the meetings with him shaking. It was not just me. Then I started to get more worried. I started to realize that the guy couldn't accept anybody else's opinion. I began to wonder if it was normal that there would be a dog at work running between my legs and barking, even while I was on the phone with a client. The guy had a dog and it was fetching while everybody else was working. This was the first office I'd seen in the United States so I wasn't sure what to expect. I asked other people and they said it was out of line. I was a shy child and very early on I didn't trust myself. That sense of trust in myself was easily disrupted. I was in a youth choir to please my parents and my youth choir instructor used to make me mouth the words. My voice was strong but not always up to her standards. I didn't tell my parents because I didn't know I didn't have to do choir. I didn't know that I was worth defending or that my feelings and my desires were important. I think that one of the most important things you can get out of mindfulness is self-love and self-compassion and knowing that you matter.
