Boundaries and mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. Why might boundaries be an issue for you? Think about the answers to these questions. Do you feel used? Do you feel like you’re constantly being dragged into things you’re uncomfortable with? Are you angry about how people treat you? Do you feel overly upset over things that don’t concern you, like a news story you’ve heard or something that happened to people you don’t know? Boundaries and mindfulness are related. Enhance Wellness With The Revitalizing Rush of Decluttering; Connie Ellefson

Connie Ellefson is an engineer, author, and professional organizer working in the Denver area. She helps people discover the rush of decluttering to enhance wellness and to release the incredible amount of creativity and energy tied up in unnecessary clutter. Whether physical, mental, or possessional, clutter takes up space in our psyches and calendars that could be put to more productive, creative, and fun use. Realizing the rush of delicious energy we get from decluttering and organizing a space is the same rush we get from exercising or releasing emotional burdens. Connie’s latest book, “Clear the Space Feel the Rush,” is all about how you can start anywhere on your decluttering journey. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.ClearTheSpace.com Book: Clear the Space Feel the Rush by Connie Ellefson TikTok: @ClearTheSpace Most Influential Person Michael Neill, author of the book, Creating The Impossible Effect on Emotions As we grow older, we gain more life experience and realize that we have gone through various emotions in the past. Sometimes, when we are in the midst of strong emotions, it feels like they will never go away. However, Connie explained a powerful technique called the “do nothing meditation,” which she considers one of the most effective tools she discusses in her book. In this meditation, you simply sit quietly for 10 minutes without doing anything specific. You are not thinking, planning, meditating, or praying. Instead, you allow yourself to become a bit bored and just be in the present moment. This practice helps the emotions we are experiencing to gradually fade away. Moreover, it can also bring forth wonderful ideas and insights. Connie emphasized that dealing with emotions effectively comes with practice and the realization that we have successfully survived all of our emotions in the past. As we grow older, we occasionally remember this truth, which helps us navigate and cope with our feelings more confidently.   Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is something I don't delve into too much, but I attend yoga classes regularly where I receive lots of suggestions about it. Even my little granddaughter, who is being taught by her mom, tells me to take a deep breath when I'm feeling stressed. It's amazing how just a couple of deep breaths can make a difference. I've learned that even two or three deep breaths can change your body chemistry and help you feel calmer. So, taking a moment to breathe deeply can be really helpful in calming down and finding balance. Suggested Resources Book: The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor Book: Creating The Impossible by Michael Neill Book: Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management For Mortals by Oliver Berkeman App: The Tapping Solution App Bullying Story Connie recounted her experience of being bullied by an addicted housemate. When under the influence of alcohol, he would say hurtful things, questioning Connie's worth and intelligence. As a sensitive person, these comments deeply affected her, leading her to doubt herself and wonder if she was truly inadequate. However, a pivotal moment occurred when the housemate said something particularly nasty and untrue. In response, Connie found the courage to stand up for herself. She firmly declared that she no longer needed to listen to his words when he was under the influence. This incident became a catalyst for change in her life. Connie came to realize that the hurtful remarks were more a reflection of the housemate's own issues and addiction rather than a true reflection of her value. From that point on, she adopted a resilient mindset, separating herself from the negativity. She understood that hurtful comments had no connection to her true self-worth and identity. This transformative experience allowed Connie to embrace her own strength and rise above the hurtful words of others. Words of Wisdom Connie shared her insights on the connection between decluttering and experiencing endorphins. She noted that not only do you feel endorphins from physical activities like a 30-minute walk, but also from emotional releases such as crying. These endorphins play a role in improving overall health and well-being. However, Connie emphasized that the key is simply being happy. Decluttering is not always necessary; what truly matters is making the decision to be happy, regardless of the presence or absence of material possessions. In her view, finding happiness is the ultimate goal, and it can be achieved through various means. Ultimately, Connie's message is clear: prioritize happiness in your life. Whether you choose to declutter or not, the important thing is to focus on cultivating happiness and embracing a positive mindset. Discover the rush of decluttering to enhance wellness in your life. Birds and Mindfulness

Birds and mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. You might remember me telling you about planting various flowers around my house and how having plants around me adds to the mindfulness in my life. Well, back in May, I made a new flower bed just for Black-Eyed Susans. Every time I look out our big window into the backyard, I see the beautiful bright yellow-orange flowers. Well this episode isn’t about flowers, it’s about birds, but they are closely related, at least in my mind. When I got married, I discovered my new in-laws were avid bird-watchers. When my wife and I would visit my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, we’d be deep in conversation, and suddenly everyone would run to the window to see a specific kind of bird that had appeared at the bird feeder. The conversation would be immediately redirected. This was all new for me. In the past, my wife’s aunt June would watch and count birds for certain organizations, I think, BirdLife International or Birdcount.org. I was always amazed that she knew about and could identify dozens and probably hundreds of different birds. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify The Joy From Birds A growing body of scientific evidence also shows that the joy delivered by birds is real. Research increasingly links exposure to nature—and specifically, exposure to birds—with improved well-being. In December, a new study by the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research connected greater bird biodiversity to increased life-satisfaction for more than 26,000 people in 26 European countries. It turns out the people who live near natural areas with a greater diversity of bird species were simply happier. In fact, the study found that seeing 10 percent more bird species generates satisfaction on par with a comparable increase in income. Birds Can Do This seeing and hearing birds can improve well-being. Bird exposure is effective for those suffering with depression, or without. Birds can bring longer-lasting psychological, intellectual, and social well-being. 5 Ways Noticing Birds Can Boost Mindfulness. Heightened Awareness: Noticing birds in your surroundings encourages you to be more present and attentive to the environment. It helps you cultivate a sense of mindfulness by focusing your attention on the present moment and the natural world around you. Deepening Observation Skills: Birdwatching requires keen observation skills, such as noticing different colors, patterns, behaviors, and sounds. Engaging in this practice sharpens your ability to observe details and enhances your overall mindfulness. Connection to Nature: Birds are an integral part of the natural ecosystem, and observing them can deepen your connection to nature. By being aware of their presence and interactions, you develop a sense of interconnectedness with the environment, promoting a mindful and appreciative mindset. Cultivating Curiosity: Birdwatching often sparks curiosity and a sense of wonder about the natural world. As you observe different bird species, you may find yourself seeking knowledge, researching their behaviors, habitats, and characteristics. This curiosity fosters an inquisitive and mindful mindset. Engaging the Senses: Birdwatching stimulates multiple senses, such as sight, sound, and sometimes even touch. Paying attention to the melodies, calls, and movements of birds can create a sensory-rich experience that draws you into the present moment and cultivates mindfulness through sensory awareness. Suggested Resources Website: Birdlife International Website: The Great Backyard Bird Count Book: Bird Therapy by Joe Harkness and Chris Packham Book: Silent Spring by Rachel Carson App: Bird Sounds, Listen and Relax Words of Wisdom I suggest we allow birds to help guide us into a deeper state of presence, serenity, and connection. Notice the melodies of their songs and the graceful and almost miraculous way they effortlessly fly around above us. Let birds be a constant reminder of the beauty and peace that surrounds us, inviting us to live fully in each moment with mindfulness and appreciation. And remember the black-eyed Susans I planted in the backyard? Just yesterday, I looked out there and saw two yellow finches having a great time drinking nectar from the flowers, flitting around, and looking like they were in heaven. That in itself was a gift of mindfulness. As a storyteller, he constantly tells different stories, some of which can be positive while others may turn negative as he dwells on certain things. Mindfulness comes to his aid by enabling him to detach and objectively examine the stories he tells himself. In addition, he reminds himself that these stories are just narratives and not necessarily the complete truth of what he experiences each day. By practicing mindfulness, Richard gains the ability to better understand and manage his emotions by gaining a clearer and more balanced view of his thoughts and stories. Thoughts on Breathing When discussing breathing in relation to mindfulness, Richard Rosser shares a helpful exercise called the “four-eight exercise.” It involves taking a breath in for a count of four and exhaling for a count of eight. This exercise has a remarkable effect as it slows everything down and feels almost magical. It provides a simple and easy way to practice mindful breathing. By focusing on the breath and using this technique, we can bring a sense of calmness and relaxation to our mind and body. Richard also discussed how mindfulness can help bullied individuals stay safer by being mindful of the situation, diffusing it, and avoiding giving the bully the attention they seek. Additionally, Richard highlighted the potential of using resources like ChatGPT for brainstorming and seeking guidance on various psychological issues, including bullying. Bruce's challenges were primarily due to his previous drug usage. However, his approach toward emotions has undergone a transformation since then. Consequently, Bruce now embraces whatever emotion he feels, understanding that it's not beneficial to push them away. To Bruce, true strength lies in being able to control one's temper, while also allowing oneself to cry and fully experience the emotions when necessary. Bruce has come to realize that hiding or suppressing emotions only leads to future problems. This valuable lesson was learned through personal hardships. Thoughts on Breathing When asked about breathing and its relation to mindfulness, Bruce Hitchcock expressed his thoughts on the matter. He mentioned that he recently came across a powerful breathing technique, recognizing the significant impact it can have. Although he couldn't recall the exact pattern of breath, he emphasized the importance of taking deep breaths for about 30 seconds. According to Bruce, this kind of deep breathing can not only change one's mood but also alter their frequency. While Bruce personally enjoys staying active through workouts to achieve heavy breathing, he has also been making an effort to incorporate breathwork into his routine. Overall, Bruce acknowledged the benefits of breathwork and found it to be a positive addition. Suggested Resources Book: Marcus Aurelius – Meditations: Adapted for the Contemporary Reader App: n/a Bullying Story Bruce Hitchcock shared his perspective on bullying when asked about it. He expressed his strong dislike for bullies and mentioned that he has always been against people who pick on those who are weaker. He believes that bullies engage in such behavior for their own reasons, perhaps to make themselves feel better, although he isn't entirely sure of their motivations. Bruce emphasized that everyone has their own story and struggles, and that should be taken into consideration. While he personally did not have a significant experience with being bullied, he acknowledged that there may have been times when someone did something, but it didn't affect him greatly. He did mention engaging in playful teasing and physical activities like wrestling and lacrosse with his peers, but it was never in a way that felt like being bullied. Instead, she focuses on recognizing when she doesn't need to react and choosing to respond from a different place. For bigger emotions, such as grief from losing loved ones, Sonya finds solace in fully embracing the waves of emotions without trying to change or avoid them. Sonya believes that by allowing herself to fully experience the emotion, it dissipates more quickly compared to suppressing it. Sonya explained that mindfulness goes beyond just not reacting; it also involves being present with deep emotions and allowing them to move through you, preventing the tendency to hold onto them. Thoughts on Breathing Sonya explained that breathing is a fundamental aspect of mindfulness and something we always have access to. Sonya, being a meditator herself, acknowledged that it's not always possible to stop and meditate in every situation. However, she emphasized that we can always focus on our breath. More specifically, when we feel overwhelmed, stressed, or fearful, simply connecting with our breath and taking a few deep breaths can bring about a significant change in our state of mind. Even just four or five intentional breaths can have a powerful impact on how we feel. Sonya recognized the accessibility and transformative nature of breathing as a tool for mindfulness. The above suggestions are purpose-driven strategies for executives, entrepreneurs, corporate employees, or anyone seeking strategies for success. She explained that while people often talk about bullying in schools, it's also important to address the issue in the workplace. Even at a place like Disney, known as the happiest place on earth, Sonya encountered a bully who was another executive. During a conversation about a project, the executive started screaming at Sonya. Instead of reacting with anger or shouting back, Sonya turned inward and checked in with her own feelings. She calmly suggested ending the meeting and discussing things later when they could both be calmer. Despite the executive's continued yelling as Sonya left, she realized she didn't have to participate or let it affect her. Sonya shared that by using mindfulness techniques, she was able to stay calm and not let the bully's behavior impact her. She highlighted the importance of discussing workplace bullying and not accepting it, while also emphasizing that mindfulness can help individuals maintain their composure and choose not to engage in such negative interactions. Craig's negative feelings, like resentment and anger, turned into gratitude and happiness. This shift in his mindset allowed him to approach situations differently, without fear. Whenever he takes this pause, it always works for him, instantly changing the atmosphere and avoiding conflicts. He explained that growing up without a dad made him vulnerable, which unfortunately led to him being targeted by a kidnapper. But apart from that, he also faced intense bullying at school. He described it as being beaten up severely, like a piñata, as if candy would come out of him. It was incredibly painful and humiliating. Craig shared an example from when he joined a football team in eighth grade. Despite being very small in size, he chose to play as a center to feel included. However, the popular guys on the team treated him poorly. They would punch him in the face during huddles and continue to physically harm him in the locker room. They tore his underwear and subjected him to wedgies, making him feel ashamed and unable to confide in his mom. The constant beatings took a toll on him, to the point where he attempted suicide. Craig's intention was not to end his life, but to make those who hurt him feel remorseful. Craig emphasized the importance of mindfulness in such situations, explaining that he would respond with consciousness, evaluation, research, and self-reflection rather than getting trapped in echo chambers or blindly following others' opinions. He explained that he has learned to love his emotions as they are and then choose the emotion he wants. David uses techniques to help with your emotions that encourage you to shake, stimulate, and energize. Thoughts on Breathing “Well, I've been practicing breathing exercises since I did Silver Mind Control back in 1977. I'm still learning, so I will keep practicing.” Suggested Resources Book: Letting Go by David R Hawkins App: n/a Bullying Story When asked about a story to share, David Weigert spoke about how he has never been bullied because of the vibe he puts out. He attributes this to his trust in God and his practice of seeking forgiveness and forgiving others quickly to avoid generating negativity. He mentioned his struggle with road rage while driving and how he took a training to calm himself down by using techniques like deep breathing. However, David's revelation came when he started shaking about nine years ago to relieve his back pain. He noticed that our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, and the shaking increases wave activity within the body, similar to how waves propagate during natural disasters like tsunamis. This increased wave activity brings changes and nutrients to the body and washes out toxins. David also mentioned an example of using waves to prevent freezing in a whale rescue operation. He sees the importance of waves in our bodies and considers himself a “guinea pig” for his own practice. He hopes to study this further in the future.
