New Culture Forum
"Having the deeper discussions mainstream media won't provide."
Founded in 2006, the NCF is one of Britain's leading conservative think tanks. Our mission is to challenge the cultural orthodoxies dominant in our institutions, public life and wider culture.
So What You're Saying Is... (#SWYSI) is our weekly interview programme, NewSpeak is our weekly "in-house" discussion show, and CounterCulture is our panel discussion with experts and significant figures from the political, cultural and academic worlds.
Our goal is to provide what the MSM won't: a platform for leading voices & experts from politics, culture, academia etc. to engage in calm, constructive and enlightening discussions on the most critical issues of today.

Borders & Social Boundaries Matter: Why Humanity Must Relearn The Art Of Drawing Boundaries
Prof. Frank Furedi returns to "So What You're Saying Is..." to discuss his new book *Why Borders Matter: Why Humanity Must Relearn the Art of Drawing Boundaries*, in which Furedi argues that Western society has become estranged from the borders and social boundaries that have for centuries given meaning to human experience. This book argues that the controversy surrounding mass migration and physical borders runs in parallel and is closely connected to the debates surrounding the symbolic boundaries people need to guide on the issues of everyday life.
Numerous commentators claim that borders have become irrelevant in the age of mass migration and globalisation. Some go so far as to argue for ‘No Borders’. And it is not merely the boundaries that divide nations that are under attack! The traditional boundaries that separate adults from children, or men from women, or humans from animals, or citizens and non-citizens, or the private from the public sphere are often condemned as arbitrary, unnatural, and even unjust. Paradoxically, the attempt to alter or abolish conventional boundaries coexists with the imperative of constructing new ones. No-Border campaigners call for safe spaces. Opponents of cultural appropriation demand the policing of language and advocates of identity politics are busy building boundaries to keep out would-be encroachers on their identity.
Furedi argues that the key driver of the confusion surrounding borders and boundaries is the difficulty that society has in endowing experience with meaning. The most striking symptom of this trend is the cultural devaluation of the act of judgment, which has led to a loss of clarity about the moral boundaries in everyday life. The infantilisation of adults that runs in tandem with the adultification of children offers a striking example of the consequence of non-judgmentalism.
Prof. Furedi's book is available from Amazon via this link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Borders-...

How We Reverse The Left's Long March And Take Back Control Of Britain's Institutions
On this week's episode of #NCFCounterCulture our panel discuss our new publication: "The Long March: How the Left Won the Culture War and What To Do About It." [ our publication may be downloaded free of charge from our website: http://newcultureforum.org.uk -- Hard copies may be purchased by making a £10 donation also via the website (further details please email: contact@newcultureforum.org.uk) ]
How does culture shape political power? Many Conservatives now fear that victory at the ballot box is not enough. Despite Boris Johnson’s triumph in the 2019 election, they sense that a larger cultural battle has been lost. Some accuse the left of mounting a secret, slow-motion takeover, inspired by the ideas of the Italian communist Antonio Gramsci – the ‘long march through the institutions’.
The New Culture Forum's new book by Marc Sidwell uncovers the truth: a tangled history in which active subversion runs alongside unintended consequences and missed opportunities. Armed with a clearer understanding of the left’s long march, it also reveals new possibilities for fighting back.
Our Panel:
* Melanie Philips
* Marc Sidwell
* Rafe Heydel-Mankoo

The Campaign For Common Sense: The Freedom To Comment, Discuss and Debate Without Fear Of Reprisal
According to a recent poll, 78% of people feel that they have to walk on egg shells when discussing certain issues. This poll was commissioned by the Campaign for Common Sense -- and the founder of this organisation is this week's guest on "So What You're Saying Is..." (#SWYSI)
The Campaign for Common Sense (http://www.campaigncommonsense.com) describes itself as follows:
"The Campaign for Common Sense (CCS) exists to bring together those who want to have a grown up discussion and debate.
"We will conduct research, and organise events online and across the country, involving experts in all fields and bring them to the widest possible audience. We will be champions for free speech and tolerance.
"We will be asking…
"What does diversity actually mean and does it really matter?
"Should statues of historical figures be removed because of modern values?
"Is there anything that we shouldn’t joke about?
"Should the police be prioritising language on social media over fighting street crime?
"Are schools there to teach kids what to think, or to help them think for themselves?
"Is Britain bigger than Brexit?
"Should people be able to speak their mind at work?
"Does positive discrimination work?
"What views and arguments should be banned from debates?
"Can children consent to changing their gender?"

Andrew Roberts - Winston Churchill, BLM, The Far Left And Britain's Culture War
With Sir Winston Churchill back in the news, this week's guest on #SWYSI is the leading historian Andrew Roberts, author of arguably the finest one-volume Churchill biography (now available in paperback: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Churchill-Wa...)
Mr. Roberts explains that the recent attack on Churchill (both his reputation and his statue in Parliament Square) is merely the most recent of a long line of attacks dating back some considerable time. These have ben orchestrated by the extreme left and are a key part of the current culture war that is underway in Britain.
Criticising the lacklustre response of police and institutions to the BLM attacks, Mr. Roberts warns that this culture war reaches far beyond assaults on statues and historic figures and legacies. The BLM movement is merely part of the longer march through the instiutions as the left attempts to forever change the face and identiy of Britain.
Mr. Roberts highlights the problem of Britain's education system, particularly the refusal to believe in heroes or espouse the "great man/woman" approach to teaching history.
Welcoming Boris Johnson's tweets in support of Churchill following the attack, Mr. Roberts believes the PM needs to go further and back up his comments with direct action.
From Galipolli to the future of Europe, Peter Whittle and Mr. Roberts discuss Churchill's greatness, his long, prodigious & varied career as well as the qualities, background and life events that together forged his character.

BLM Protests: From Historic Statues To Television; Is Britain In A Full-Blown Culture War?
Britain's most iconic national heroes (incl. Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Francis Drake & Lord Nelson) have been denounced by #BLM protestors, with calls for their memorials to be demolished or banished. In response -- and without any public consultation -- institutions, councils and companies have made highly controversial & polarising decisions regarding some of the most visible elements of British culture, history & identity, from the removal of historic statues to the renaming of public spaces and even the banning of some of the nation's favourite comedy shows/episodes.
Is Britain now engaged in a full-blown culture war and what is the end result likely to be? Are today's youth being failed by schools & universities or are they receiving a balanced education about British history, the British Empire and slavery past & present?
Joining Peter Whittle for this week's episode of #NCFCounterCulture are:
* Claire Fox, Director & Founder of the Academy of Ideas and former Brexit Party MEP
* Emma Webb, Director of the Forum on Integration, Democracy and Extremism (FIDE) at the Civitas think tank
* Rafe Heydel-Mankoo of the NCF, Historian & Broadcaster (specialising in British symbols of identity, etc)
