Our guest on this week's #SWYSI is Dr. Jerome Booth, Chairman of Anglia Ruskin University as well as a British economist, author & emerging markets investor. In his new book "Have We All Gone Mad? Why Groupthink is Rising and How to Stop it", Dr. Booth investigates why some of us have abandoned reason in favour of trite memes, intolerance and hatred. Have we all gone mad? Or can we identify the patterns and causes of what is happening and try to stop it? Dr. Booth argues that, whilst we like to think of ourselves as rational, human beings are fundamentally irrational creatures – and nowhere is that more apparent than in the fug of groupthink we see around us, from the boardroom to social media. Of the various forms of collective irrationality, groupthink is particularly dangerous. It involves adherence to a faulty consensus, often has a binary moral dimension (one is seen as either virtuous or evil) and is sustained through fear to challenge. Counter-intuitively, the most intelligent and erudite amongst us are particularly susceptible, and when groupthink takes hold, vigorous efforts are made to shut down debate and to bully and punish transgressors. As a result, toleration, liberalism, history, reason and science are under threat. Mass groupthink amongst both the elite and the masses affects millions of people. It has led to financial mismanagement leading up to the 2008 crisis and beyond; poor decision-making at the onset of Covid-19; exaggerated, unchallenged claims which have motivated nonsensical policies; and distortions in academia and journalism. On this week's #SWYSI, Prof. Eric Kaufmann discusses the alarming and disturbing findings of his investigation into the left-wing political culture of young people in the UK. He has found that our children are being taught radical left ideas and theories as if they are truth, with little to no attempt to provide balance or counter-arguments to these ideas. There can be no surprise, therefore, that the youth of today hold far stronger left-wing views than previous generations, with little evidence that this will change as they grow older. Eric Kaufmann is a Senior Fellow at Policy Exchange and Professor of Politics at Birkbeck College, University of London. A political scientist, Kaufmann is the author of numerous books, examining the impact of ideological and population shifts on identity and politics. These include Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth (Profile 2010) and Whiteshift: Populism, Immigration, and the Future of White Majorities (Penguin 2018). The latest YouGov poll shows the Reform Party surging in the polls. It is now tied with the Liberal Democrats at 9%, a mere 13% behind the Conservative Party at 22%. What does this mean? Harry Miller won a legal challenge against a national policy for police forces to record gender-critical views as non-crime "hate incidents". Humberside Police visited Harry Miller in January 2020 after a complaint over alleged transphobic tweets he made. It was recorded on a national database as a non-crime hate incident. But the Court of Appeal ruled on Monday the guidance was wrongly used and it had a "chilling effect" on Mr Miller's freedom of speech. Amy Gallagher is suing the Portman Clinic in north London, part of The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, claiming discrimination on the basis of race, religion and philosophical belief. She believes the NHS is forcing racist ideology on students by promoting critical race theory in its classes. She objected to a lecture entitled “whiteness – a problem of our time” in October 2020, where attendees were forced to confront “the reality of white privilege” and in another race lecture the following month, she was told that “Christianity is racist because it is European” by a talk leader. Nick Buckley MBE was cancelled in June 2020 from the multi award-winning charity he founded when online activists came for him for criticising Black Lives Matter. The trustees panicked, allowing Nick to be removed from his post. Within five weeks, Nick had forced the trustees to resign en-mass, and took back his role as chief executive. Peter Hitchens returns to our #SWYSI sofa to discuss his new book: "A Revolution Betrayed: How Egalitarians Wrecked the British Education System", which also provides an in-depth look at what will happen if things don't change radically. There are few subjects that cause parents more stress than the education of their children. Peter Hitchens describes the misjudgements made by politicians over the years that have led to the increase of class distinction and privilege in our education system. This is of course the opposite of what was intended. Given that the cost of private secondary education is now in the region of £200,000 and the cream of Comprehensive Schools are now oversubscribed, parents are spending thousands on private tutoring and fee-paying prep schools in order to get their children into these academically excellent schools. Meanwhile hypocritical Labour politicians like Diane Abbott send their children to expensive private day schools. So, what alternatives - if any - are there? Peter Hitchens argues that in trying to bring about an educational system which is egalitarian, the politicians have created a system which is the exact opposite. And what's more, it is a system riddled with anomalies - Sixth Form Colleges select pupils on ability at the age of 15, which rules out any child who does not have major educational backing from home (heavy involvement by working parents or private tutors, for example) and academies also are selective, though they pretend not to be.
