BBC Radio 4's legendary "Quote... Unquote" has entertained audiences since 1976. However, in December 2021, fans were dismayed to discover that the show was at an end. On this week's #SWYSI, Nigel Rees, the creator & host of "Quote... Unquote", explains the events that led him to cancel his own show. Africa's population growth in the last 50 years has been unprecedented. By mid-century, the continent will make up a quarter of the global population, compared to one-tenth in 1980. By the end of the century, the proportion could be as much as 40 per cent. This is a mega-trend that should not be ignored. Africa's youth is the most striking aspect of its demography. As the rest of the world ages, and the population of many countries starts to shrink, almost 60 per cent of Africa's population is younger than 25 years old. This 'youthquake' will have immense consequences for the social, economic and political reality in Africa. Edward Paice is the author of "Youthquake: Why Africa's Demography Should Matter to the World." He joins us on the #SWYSI sofa to discuss his book, which presents a detailed, nuanced analysis of the varied demography of Africa. He rejects the fanciful over-optimism of some commentators and doom-laden prophecies of others, while scrutinising received wisdom, and carefully considering the ramifications of the youthquake for Africa and the world. A day after his landmark court ruling, retired police officer and Fair Cop founder Harry Miller joins us to discuss his victory for free speech, which saw the Court of Appeal rule that the police's definition of a 'hate incident' is unlawful and had a 'chilling effect' on his freedom of expression after he was visited over trans tweets. On 30 November 2021 Neil Oliver delivered the New Culture Forum's 2021 Smith Lecture to a sold-out audience in central London. The title to his talk was "The Attack on Our History & Culture". In recent years we have seen a concerted effort to rewrite British history, denigrating its achievements, exaggerating its faults and casting its heroes as villains. From Churchill to Nelson, our most revered national figures have been unjustly defamed & their reputations traduced. From the abolition of slavery to the Industrial Revolution and the development of one of the world’s most racially tolerant societies, Britain’s remarkable achievements are now undermined by agenda-driven historical revisionists. Alas, from schools to universities, our younger generations are now all too often taught such revisionism as historical fact. No surprise, therefore, that attitudes towards Britain’s history & culture, and institutions such as the Monarchy, are far more negative in those under 25 than above it. This divergence in opinion is greater than we have ever known before – and does not bode well for the future. For a nation ignorant of its past is unlikely to sustain its culture, institutions and society. Whether our current predicament is evidence of the Marxist “Long March Through the Institutions” or not, from the Soviet Union to “Year Zero” Cambodia, the revision – and eradication – of history is a favourite tactic of radical ideologues. NEIL OLIVER Neil Oliver has considerable first-hand experience of “cancel culture” and the attack on history. During his tenure as President of the Scottish National Trust (2017-2020) he was subjected to numerous attacks and pressure to oust him for his public views, including supporting Scotland remaining within the Union, condemning the Scottish government’s “Hate Crime Bill” and defending JK Rowling against accusations of transphobia.
