Is the 'Shared Responsibility' model for Cloud Security broken? I had an incredible interview with Neil Carson, CEO of Yellowbrick Data on The Ravit Show, during my recent trip to Hong Kong. We tackled some pressing issues in the world of cloud security and enterprise data platforms. Neil shared insights on the recent data breaches affecting Snowflake customers, which have been called one of the biggest data breaches ever, impacting 165 companies across various industries. This incident highlighted significant vulnerabilities in data management and security, emphasizing that no one is immune, regardless of the provider. We also discussed the 'shared responsibility' model for security, which has been widely accepted but often misunderstood. Neil pointed out that companies sometimes assume cloud providers handle more than they actually do. This breach served as a crucial reminder for companies to understand their role in securing data and not rely solely on their providers. Securing enterprise data platforms during modernization and cloud migration is a complex challenge. Neil explained that the process involves integrating various systems and managing vast amounts of data, making it difficult to maintain robust security measures. Looking ahead, Neil believes that the recent breaches will lead to a stronger focus on security protocols and better education on the shared responsibility model.
