Life of the Locum with Dr. Casey Gaunt

Dr. Casey Gaunt grew up in Virginia and started working at a horse ranch when he was a teenager. This created an interest in animals in general, which made him want to go to vet school.  He went to Virginia Tech for a bachelor’s degree in Animal and Poultry science before getting into vet school in 2002 at Virginia Tech (Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine).   Casey then got an internship in Saskatoon at the WCVM, where he decided he wanted to specialize in Internal Medicine and met his now husband, Joe.  In 2010, Casey went into private practice in Florida for a year before coming back to the WCVM.  He supervised the ICU for two years before moving back into Internal Medicine until January of 2016.  At that time, he wanted to find something different in his career and decided to leave the WCVM.  Casey began doing locum work while figuring out what he wanted to do long term, and ended up really enjoying it - so much so that it has been his full-time gig ever since! If you're considering locum work this episode will be great for you as we cover: Casey's unique career journey from WCVM to becoming a full-time locum specialist Why pursue locum opportunities? Identifying work dissatisfaction and what you can do about it Making the decision to walk away from a job you don't like Crafting your schedule and "pulse work" The pros and cons of locum work and things you need to look out for Setting clear expectations with clinics you work at Casey's Impact Round! What You Don't See on Instagram...

Dr. Leicht recently had a conversation with previous Veterinary Project Podcast guest Elaine Clemenson in which she made the comment "don't believe everything you see on Instagram!" The comment stuck with Jonathan throughout the week and became the impetus for this episode. The reality is, what we see on Instagram is in most cases surface-level material designed to catch attention. It's important for us to remind ourselves that this is often the case, and that behind the photos, the carefully curated text, and the gloss and glamor is so much more than meets the eye. To drive this point home, Dr. Leicht and Dr. Bugg discuss a number of topics including: Mike's recent 10k run race and behind the scenes of his post-race state of mind The Gap and The Gain Pass / Fail mentality in vet med Peak performance vs. optimal performance How two pieces of contradictory advice can both be true depending on the season of life you're in We're online! Why the Heck is Everything so Expensive (and what can we do about it)?

Unless you've been living under a rock lately, you've definitely noticed the cost of things going up! Everything from gas to groceries, from utilities to clothing, life costs a lot more today than it did even a short 6 months ago.  In veterinary medicine we are not unaffected. Clinic owners, suppliers, and retailers are all feeling the impacts of rising costs.  Combined with rising interest rates, staffing shortages, pressures on wages, and the overall ability for customers to pay for ever-increasing costs of services, we're operating in very unique times.  In this episode, Dr. Leicht shares some of his opinions and insights on how inflation is impacting clinic owners, customers, and everyone involved in the value chain, while also sharing some strategies on what we can do about it.  Topics discussed include: The definition of inflation How did we get here? How inflation impacts veterinary medicine The rising cost of goods and supplies  Tough decisions with patients in a rising cost environment Inventory management  How clinic owners / operators can manage the rising cost environment We're online! Committed to Caring with Dr. Kwane Stewart, Founder of Project Street Vet

A graduate from the renowned Colorado State University Veterinary program, Dr. Kwane has been a California practicing vet for 22 years. He has worked in nearly every part of the profession - honing his clinical and business expertise. His journey started in ’97 as an associate and emergency clinician in San Diego. From there he climbed the ranks quickly, becoming the Chief Medical Officer of Vetco Hospitals, Inc. Later he would take the reins of a struggling municipal shelter as County Veterinarian and reverse one of the worst euthanasia rates in the country. Most recently, he completed a six year stint as the Chief Veterinary Officer of American Humane, and Director of their legacy program, No Animals Were Harmed®, protecting over 100,000 animals every year around the globe on film and TV sets. Today he serves as the Chief Medical Officer and head Veterinarian for Papaya Pet Care. He has been sought for his expertise by many media outlets and major companies – including Disney, United Airlines and Sea World – for guidance to improve their animal care standards. He is known for his outspoken, compassionate, charismatic and genuine nature. Today, his career has evolved into another new journey. His true calling…helping pets and people in need. Many years ago, during a five-year tenure as a Shelter Veterinarian in a struggling, depressed area of California, Dr. Kwane began to form a true appreciation for those that struggle to afford health care for their pets. One day, on a whim, he headed downtown with some medical supplies. He set up a table near a homeless food bank, and invited anyone with a pet to be examined and treated at no charge. It was the most memorable day of his career. Afterwards, he made more consistent efforts to find Homeless people, wherever they were, and give free medical aid to their pets. Now, years later, his journey is now being chronicled on a new television series, called “The Street Vet”. It follows him as he travels the streets of California helping pets, and people alike, while retrieving some of the most remarkable and inspiring stories of sacrifice and hope. In this wide-ranging conversation with Dr. Stewart, we cover: The origination of Project Street Vet Working with the homeless and their pets Being committed to care The bond between pet and homeless person How working with the homeless changed the trajectory of Kwane's career Happiness within homelessness Hollywood or homeless: pet lovers are the same Funding veterinary care on the streets The role of pet insurance Making contributions - how can you do it? Kwane's Impact Round! Want to support Project Street Vet?
