The Epstein-Barr Virus Solution
Has the Epstein-Barr virus ever been on your radar? The EBV is a very smart virus that basically hijacks our cells and hides in our immune system, and it’s about time that we know all about it. Get clarity around the steps to take to healing EBV or even just finding out if you have it with Doctor of Clinical Nutrition Kasia Kines.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Click here to Listen on iTunes or Stitcher:Be sure to subscribe to this podcast on iTunes and leave us a rating and a review! Stitcher – Click Here iTunes – Click HereTopics Discussed in this Episode:What is chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)? How is it different from severe chronic active EBV?What is the appropriate testing for EBV?How does the mechanism of EBV reactivation happen? What are the different types of triggers for EBV?How relevant is nutrition to EBV?Key Takeaways:One of the things that can trigger EBV reactivation in your infected B-cells is if you happen to have another infection. The EBV thrives on toxicity and feeds on excess hormones produced by your body when you’re having hormonal imbalance caused by other health issues, stress, exposure to toxins, etc. It’s very pertinent to women who are breastfeeding or postpartum or going through perimenopausal changes. You need to have a plant for every 100 square feet that you live in to filter the air inside your house. The concentration of toxins inside your house is eight times more than outside. The food that you eat is important because the food is the foundation. If you start improving your food and decreasing your toxicity level, things will start shifting.Selenium stops the replication process of EBV so it is recommended to take selenium supplements. You can’t fight EBV when you lack sleep or when your blood sugar is unstable. Action Steps:Test for EBV by going to direct to consumer labs.If you are going through the airport, you can decrease your toxic load, especially on your thyroid, by avoiding the X-ray machine. Instead, you can request for a pat-down.Improve your air quality at home by having green plants indoors. If you have heated floors at home, opt for natural rugs that you can wash naturally instead of wall-to-wall carpeting. You need to be strategic in targeting EBV because you don’t want to spend a whole year trying to figure it out, you want to start healing.Invest in organic food, and avoid microwaving your food. Also, make sure that you don’t go hypoglycemic and that you don’t skip meals.Dr. Kasia Kines said:“Once you have a virus, it stays with you for life, so some antibodies will always be elevated if you’ve had it… Pretty much, it’s impossible to not have that virus.”“Skipping meals is not optional. Having meals that is just one group of food and is not balanced, is not optional. Just like having low nutrient status, having hypoglycemia, ups and downs with the glucose, that is wonderful for the virus but not for us.”Thanks for listening! PCOS, IVF & Breast Cancer Prevention
Are you worried about getting breast cancer? If you are looking for more information about breast cancer prevention and support during recovery, then you’ve come to the right podcast. I interview Carol Lourie who talks not only about breast cancer prevention and recovery but also about all things PCOS, blood sugar balancing, and emotional wellbeing.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Topics Discussed in this Episode:The link between hormonal conditions or imbalancesWhy PCOS often goes undiagnosedThe top-down vs the bottom-up approach to PCOSHow to get a Hashimoto’s diagnosis if you have itSome of the important testings involved in PCOSWhy blood sugar management is important for our overall hormonal healthWhat are some indications of having blood sugar problemsWhy you need to detoxify your body and your homeHow acupuncture can support hormonal healthThe Eclectic Triphasic Medical System (ETMS)What are the essential things to eat and things to avoid for breast cancer prevention and/or recoveryThe steps to take to dive deeper into our emotional wellbeingKey Takeaways:If you don’t handle the emotions that come with chronic disease, you don’t quite recover your health.PCOS is a syndrome, which means there are multiple different contributing factors to its symptoms. Having PCOS doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to have fertility problems or failed multiple miscarriages, but it can often lead to that if the underlying metabolic dysregulation is not properly dealt with. And you don’t have to have cysts to have PCOS.Your hormonal health is part of your overall health and it’s a reflection of how well you take care of yourself on a daily basis.Diabetes has been known to be called the ‘silent killer’. That is because severe symptoms of blood sugar are often ‘asymptomatic’.The healthier your body is when you go into IVF, the better the results will be.In Chinese medicine, if your organs and your chi or the freeways of your energy are imbalanced, then your hormones will be imbalanced. If you have very large, dense breasts, even if you are doing regular self-breast exams, it can be very difficult to pick up tumors.Action Steps:If you have thyroid issues, switch to a gluten-free low inflammatory diet to help recover your thyroid health. Make sure that you have certain nutrients in your diet or take supplements to really support thyroid health. If you’re looking to get an IVF, work with someone for three months prior to get your body in better shape and have a more positive response to IVF.If you’re going to do chemo and radiation, make sure that it’s the right chemo for you, that your healthy cells are being protected, and that the side effects are lessened. If you have a family history of breast cancer, find an oncologist or a breast specialist who really understands that and who can put you into a diagnostic mammogram category with maybe a breast MRI every eight months or once a year.Once you get a diagnosis, it’s always best to go and get a second opinion. Don’t just take the first thing that is said to you but do a little bit of research. For breast cancer care/prevention/recovery, avoid saturated fats, fried food, fast food, sugary drinks, standard meat, sugary over-the-counter boxed cereals, and alcohol.Carol said:“Unfortunately, in our society, we’re not taught about how to stay balanced as we’re little… This should be something that’s part of standard education -- how to have a balanced life and how to stay in touch with our inner being and how to take care of ourselves.”“It takes a lot of support to get through a health crisis, whether it’s PCOS, infertility, failed IVFs, multiple IVFs or breast cancer... Find a woman or a doctor who really will support your highest self and not diminish or dismiss your concerns. And don’t give up." Reflecting and Insights on Success, Abundance, Health and Life
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the things that you need to get done? Sometimes we are so focused on trying to get to the top of the mountain but we forget the importance of the steps that it takes to actually get there. In this episode, I share some of my reflections and insights that will hopefully help to guide you to more power and possibility.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Topics Discussed in this Episode:The importance of acknowledging yourselfOverwhelm a.k.a My Way of Controlling the FutureTaking control of your health by making the right choicesShowing up from a place of integrity and cleaning up your life with the out-of-integrity listExperiencing joy and happinessStanding for the possibility of who people can beWhy you shouldn’t sacrifice your wellbeingWhy it’s never about the moneyComing from a place of love vs coming from a place of fearFunctioning in Have, Do, Be vs functioning in Be, Do, HaveHow more work could often lead to less livingKey Takeaways:We often think that things aren’t moving fast enough or that we’re not doing more. But it’s not about the “doing”, it’s about the “being”. You can’t be your optimal self if all you do is the former and not the latter.Overwhelm is an inability to be present that we create from a place of fear. It’s something that allows you to play small, to hide out in fear, and it ultimately makes you really ineffective.Recognizing overwhelm allows you to more easily pull yourself out of it and move forward.Doing things with integrity is like cleaning up the good, the bad, and the ugly, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well.Whatever it is in your life, if you’re not getting results, check your integrity.Joy and happiness is not something that you wait for. You create it, you cultivate it, and it is a choice to experience it.Many people are more committed to their current circumstance than their future. They don’t value themselves so they don’t invest in themselves.Committing to yourself means that you have a deep sense of self-worth.We either come from a place of love or a place of fear. Fear is tied up in our excuses about time, money, and relationships. It’s also tied up with frustration, overwhelm, lack, worry, and doubt. Love is solid. It’s grounded, and it’s rooted, and it’s full of faith in yourself, in the future, and in the universe. Action Steps:Take some time to journal and come up with new insights into your life, your family, your relationships, and your business. Consider the following questions:What are you more committed to?Where are you sacrificing yourself currently in your life?Where in your life are you pushing to get a result, versus letting it flow? Are you functioning from Have, Do, Be vs. Be, Do, Have? What does your future self look like? What do they do? How are they being? Samantha said:“Does everybody get to this point of having more confidence and being more courageous? No, not necessarily. But it takes time, it takes commitment, it takes openness and lots of willingness, and a whole lot of self-love.”“Start to live in your truth now so that you can empower those around you to live in their power. Because that’s what it’s really about. When we start to step more powerfully into who we are, then we can give that ability to others to do the same.” Thanks for listening! The Keto Diet, Fasting & Finding Your Own Keto
What is the keto diet, and what does it mean to find your own keto? Learn all about keto from author and keto enthusiast Leanne Vogel as she talks about her own keto journey. Have a look into the keto lifestyle and learn how you can do keto right.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Topics Discussed in this Episode:What happens when you do the ketogenic diet wrongThe woman-friendly approach to the keto dietHow we can use our period as a biomarker for healthWhy you should do carb-ups and how to do itGoing dairy-free on ketoHow to do keto if you have an issue with saturated fatsKeto and thyroid healthTips on fastingNavigating the RV lifestyle on ketoKey Takeaways:There’s this thing in the ketogenic space that everyone is terrified of called gluconeogenesis, that could lead some people to go about the ketogenic diet the wrong way. There’s still a lot of misinformation about what works and what doesn’t work in the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet is such a therapeutic diet and it heals our bodies in such a way that the body that we had a year from starting keto was a completely different body from the body we have today.Holding fear around change actually holds us back from actually accomplishing more with our eating styles.By giving ourselves permission to eat carbs when we feel it’s best for our body, it puts the onus on our body to tell us when it’s time to have carbs.Fasting is a tool that you can use at your disposal.Action Steps:Make sure that you’re doing the ketogenic diet right and figure out what works for you.Take note of your blood color during your period and find out what it could mean for your health.Switch to using a menstruation cup instead of the usual menstrual pads.Use carb-ups to your benefit.Use fasting as a tool according to what works best for you.Leanne said:Being in a constant state of ketosis maybe isn’t that great, just like riding your bike 24/7 isn’t great… Dipping in and out of ketosis with the ebb and flow of foods available and activities going on, that just makes more of a lifestyle change that you can live long-term.”“It’s important for anyone, regardless if you’re a blogger or a nutritionist or an expert in whatever, to show vulnerability in whatever you do because that’s how you live from your truth and you continue to learn more about yourself and about the world around you.”Thanks for listening! If you have any questions that you would like answered in future Q&A episodes, you can ask me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie, or contact me through my website. Get ready to learn about these things and more as hormone biohacker and functional naturopath Nicole Harlow talks about all things cervical mucus. Enjoy!Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Topics Discussed in this Episode:How toxic ingredients in makeup can impact our hormonesWhere to start cleaning up your makeup bagApps that can help you discern about beauty care products and its ingredientsGreen beauty as an industryPersonal care products, menstrual products, and sexual healthThe fertility finger testWhat happens during the time we are ovulatingKey Takeaways:The more expensive a makeup is, it doesn’t mean the better it is for you.It doesn’t take a lot of toxic chemicals in your products to make a difference. If you live in the US, federal regulations allow a certain level of heavy metals in the pigments of makeup products. There’s a basic blueprint for what we’re looking for when it comes to hormonal balance throughout the month and fertility. It’s helpful to know what the blueprint is so you can see where your body is at.Being fertile isn’t just about having a baby, it’s about having healthy hormones overall. As a woman, ovulation is a beautiful time to be in.Action Steps:Clean up your makeup bag, and do it systematically.Make sure that you are using an all-natural deodorant.Be a proactive consumer and take the time to know what’s in your products.Consider free bleeding during your period.Do the fertility finger test and get to know your body at a deeper level.Nicole said:“Any opportunity for us to get closer to our bodies, to touch, feel, sense what’s going on down there, is a really good thing. We’re not taught any of this when we were growing up… and what you find as you dig down into it is that for most women, there’s a pattern going on.”“Menstruation and the hormonal cycle is not a curse, it’s a blessing. 12 Areas Affecting Your Fertility + Strategies for Men and Women
Are you and husband trying to start a family but are somehow beset with fertility issues? Fertility expert Dr. Marc Sklar is here to talk about how you can support your fertility and help you find a solution. Don’t lose hope, believe in your fertility, and empower your body to create a healthy pregnancy.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Topics Discussed in this Episode:My number one advice to finding the solution to fertility issuesThe Fertility Balanced Wheel (12 areas that affect fertility)The signs and symptoms telling you that you need to pay more attention to what you’re doing with your digestive systemThe 2 key areas that have a huge impact on any health conditionWhere we need to start making changes and howThe impact of environmental toxins on our overall healthAcupuncture and herbal medicine for fertilityHow men can support their fertilityPrenatal supplementationKey Takeaways:Three big areas that affect fertility, that often get missed and ignored are digestion, inflammation, and autoimmunity.Digestive issues can take a long time to heal. It’s not something that you heal once and you’ll all good and you can move on for the rest of your life, because it’s something that you use every day, all day long. The digestive system is the key to most patient issues like unexplained infertility. It’s essential that we get the foundation taken care of, which is what’s going on with our diet and how we are eating.Regardless of what kind of health issue we’re dealing with, the digestive function needs to be at the top of the list of things we need to look into. For many of us, more stress equals more digestive issues.Acupuncture is wonderful at increasing blood circulation and regulating the nervous system.Herbs are used to change hormones specifically. Most of the burden when it comes to fertility falls on the woman because they are the ones that carry the baby. But that doesn’t mean that the man doesn’t have responsibilities and doesn’t take part in this process.Action Steps:Be mindful and aware of what’s going on in your digestive system.Eat balanced meals throughout the day that are made up of clean, whole foods.Pick a diet that works for you, and tweak it according to what your body needs.Objectively look at the 12 areas that affect your fertility and see how you can improve in each area.Do one thing at a time. Start making changes in one area, starting with one thing in that area, and build upon successes.Dr. Sklar said:“We’re so used to compartmentalizing and specializing when it comes to medicine in this day and age that we forget that there are all these other areas that can and do influence our overall health, and our reproductive health is no different.”“The one thing I want every man out there to recognize is even if you’ve got low sperm count, you’ve got poor motility… and poor morphology... if those things are all compromised, don’t think there’s nothing you can do about it. There’s a lot you can do.” Thanks for listening! If you have any questions about the 12 Week High Fat, Low Carb Weight Loss Program for Women you can always reach me over at Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie, or send me an email and I’ll be happy to answer your questions. And come to hang out with me in my Holistic Wellness Private Community on Facebook.Subscribe to this podcast on iTunes and leave us a rating and a review! Snacking + Insulin + Weight Loss + High Fat
Are you one of those women who is looking for the solution to their weight gain and their hormonal issues? So many of these women are feeling really lost and unable to move forward in order to heal because they are so consumed by the ‘how’. Focus on your ‘why’ instead as we dive into this topic of weight loss and hormones.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Why you should step out of our comfort zoneWhy you need to focus on your ‘why’ rather than the ‘how’Why you must learn to effectively manage your insulinWhat insulin does in your bodyWhat causes insulin resistanceSome questions about the High Carb, Low Fat Weight Loss Program and what you can expect from it Key Takeaways:There are hundreds if not thousands of different weight loss programs, and they all work. At the end of the day, what matters is your consistency and dedication to follow through with these programs.Insulin is one of the hormones that dictate your weight gain or weight loss. Both insulin and cortisol are fat-storing hormones, and when you’re stressed and your cortisol level goes up, your insulin also goes up.The more frequently you eat, the more frequently your insulin spikes up. Lowering the number of times your insulin spikes and balancing the insulin in your blood sugar is what’s going to help you achieve weight loss.Insulin has a direct impact on your ovaries. If you have a lot of PMS issues or if you’re dealing with PCOS, when you manage and balance your insulin and blood sugar levels, you’ll notice that your cycles regulate easier, or if you’re missing your period, you will get your period back.If you have chronically high levels of insulin, it makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to lose weight. When your cells no longer respond to the insulin, this is what is called insulin resistance, and it’s often the precursor to diabetes. Action Steps:Step outside of your comfort zone, take that leap and commit to what’s possible for your future.Whatever weight loss program you choose, be consistent and dedicated.Take the snacking out of your eating habits.Join the 12 Week High Fat, Low Carb Weight Loss Program for Women and address weight loss from a hormonal perspective. Samantha said:“There is so much that we miss out on because we are so committed to our current circumstance. And I want you to commit to what’s possible for your future, and that means stepping outside of your comfort zone and just riding with that fear… It’s part of the process.” “We don’t know the ‘how’. You have to forget the ‘how’ because it is a paralyzer of dreams. Know your ‘why’, know your ‘what’, and know your ‘who’, and that’s how you can move forward.”Thanks for listening! Healing Your Thyroid
Did you know that thousands of women are struggling with thyroid issues and that many of them don’t even know it? McCall McPherson talks about thyroid health and how important it is that that we become educated about it. When we share this message, we could bring more healing to more women.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.Topics Discussed in this Episode:Why the thyroid is so important for our overall hormonal healthWhat the right testing for thyroid health looks likeWhere medicine is at in terms of lab rangesSome of the limitations of the typical thyroid medicationWhat to look for to see if you have a significant conversion disorderSome of the things that would interrupt the conversion processThe difference between hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto’sThe essential first steps that we can take to healing Hashimoto’sThe connection between adrenal health and thyroid healthThe foods we must avoid when it comes to optimizing thyroid healthWhat a thyroid-healing diet looks like Key Takeaways:When you think of hypothyroidism, it’s like everything slows down and dries up. You get significant hormone dysregulation and significant metabolic dysregulation. There are barriers that could keep you from being diagnosed with hypothyroidism -- inadequate labs and terrible lab ranges. Most general practitioners, primary care doctors, and even endocrinologists are only checking TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. But measuring your TSH is just like measuring how hard you’re pushing on the gas pedal of your car. No matter how hard you push, it doesn’t tell you your speed. Measuring your TSH is only telling you how hard the brain is asking the thyroid to work, it’s not telling you about the direct output. In the long term, if we don’t address the health of our thyroid, diabetes and elevated cholesterol are inevitable. If your lab results are outside of the normal range, you want to be sure that you’re connecting with someone who has a prescribing ability. The number one most common inflammatory food among patients with Hashimoto’s is dairy, followed by gluten, eggs, legumes, grains, and nuts. It’s so important to give your body the space to heal and function in a calm sort of atmosphere when you can so that when you can’t, you don’t have to.Action Steps:Get a full round of thyroid labs, download McCall’s thyroid lab guide, and see the lab ranges that you need to be in for you to be optimal. If you discover that you have a thyroid problem, find someone who can help you with it.If you’re suffering from Hashimoto’s, get off of inflammatory foods like dairy and gluten for three months so you can see how good you can feel, and then you can adjust from that point. Take a pre- and post-measurement of your antibodies so you can objectively measure the work that you’re putting in so that you’ll be encouraged to continue after that three-month period.Reduce stress by doing the following:Eat breakfast with protein every day so your adrenal glands aren’t activated,Meditate even 10 minutes a day using something like the Headspace App that basically teaches meditation in its simplest form.Rest when your body tells you to rest.Eat salt when your body is craving salt.Don’t exercise in high-intensity interval training when you’re on an empty stomach or during prolonged periods of time. McCall said:“You can’t assume that your doctor really understands thyroid. You have to kind of assume that most doctors don’t specialize in thyroid... They’re scanning paperwork to see if things are lighting up like a Christmas tree telling them that they’re abnormal.”“In medicine, in general, there’s always a risk versus benefit analysis, and absolutely the conclusion is that green leafy veggies, raw or cooked, the benefits outweigh the risks… Follow a more kind of paleo-based diet long before you take out those vital nutritional components.” Thanks for listening! If you have any questions that you would like answered in future Q&A episodes, you can ask me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie, or contact me through my website. Food Sensitivities & Your Cycle + Detox Strategies
Are you frustrated and fed up with struggling with unresolved hormonal health issues? Today, we dive into all things hormones with a certified naturopath, Dr. Naomi Judge, who is well-known in Australia for helping women connect the dots between their health, happiness, and hormones. Find out how a life of optimal vibrancy and joy can be your new normal!Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for complete show notes of every podcast episodeTopics Discussed in this Episode:Some of the common complaints and issues that women are struggling withThe impact of hormones on our cyclesThings you can do to help you gain a deeper understanding of your cycleThings that drive food sensitivitiesThe link between estrogen dominance and food intolerancesSome everyday foods that we can include in our diets to better support detoxification and our hormonal healthThe top strategies you can do to achieve your new normalThe benefits of groundingSimple things that we can do to support our adrenal healthHormones and skin healthKey Takeaways:During our cycle, estrogen changes our immune system, so we’re more likely to get coughs and colds at certain times of the month, and we’re more likely to be more susceptible to getting allergies. When you’re looking after your hormones, the first thing you need to do is clean your bowel, your liver, and your gallbladder.Focusing on self-care is really vital to balancing your hormones. If you’re busy all the time, running from task to task, and constantly feeling stressed, your hormones are not going to get a chance to settle down and you’re going to be in your sympathetic nervous state the whole time. When your hormones are beautifully balanced, it brings you that bright, vibrant look, and it's the best way to prevent premature aging. When they are imbalanced, your looks could change drastically in a short period of time, where your skin is dry and you notice more fine lines and deeper wrinkles.Action Steps:Really look at things and track things that have to do with your cycle so you can understand more about it and understand what’s related to your hormones.Rather than using an app to track your cycle, write things down.Track your food sensitivities based on your cycle.Achieve your new normal:Start by balancing out your macronutrients and recognizing what a good meal is for you. Learn what meal suits you so that you can start with just having three meals a day and stop having so many snacks, stop craving sugar, and stop feeling hungry after each meal. Also, remove your trigger foods from your diet.Focus on self-care.Re-balance your nervous system:Do deep breathing exercises.Eat slowly.Naomi said:“You feel more in control when you understand that there are things within your control that are driving these symptoms. It’s not something that’s just happening to you… It’s because there are other things going on with your hormones that you can effectively get under control.”“I think we’re now coming to a realization that what we need as women to get through this busy, stressful time is more focus inwards, more focus on ourselves, and more of that kind of quiet time.”Thanks for listening! If you have any questions that you would like answered in future Q&A episodes, you can ask me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie, or contact me through my website. Are you ready for another exciting Q&A episode? Not only am I going to answer some of your questions that I’ve pulled up from Instagram but I’m going to share a crazy story about appendicitis, ovarian cysts, digestion, and all that good stuff that happened to me over these past few weeks. Let’s dive in!Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for complete show notes of every podcast episodeTopics Discussed in this Episode:The reasons why you’re waking up several times during the night and what to do about itThe ways you can make your elixirs and what to add to themKey things to keep in mind when you have Hashimoto’sThe things that can impact your menstrual cycleKey Takeaways:The top reason women are waking up multiple times during the night is due to blood sugar instability and cortisol issues.Your body cannot heal if you’re not sleeping. When you’re sleeping, that’s how you detoxify and how your body produces human growth hormones.Frankincense essential oil is really great for ovarian cysts.Castor oil is great for detoxification so you can rub it all over your body. It’s also quite soothing and calming, so if you actually find that you have a hard time falling asleep, rub some castor oil all over.Action Steps:Take time off work.Manage your stress and lifestyle intervention.Make sure you stay on top of re-testing.Eliminate as many inflammatory foods as possible.Pay attention to the different shifts in your body.Level up your self-care by scheduling for an osteopathy or a massage.Samantha said:“Pay attention to these different shifts in your body because one little thing starts to have this trickle-down effect and starts to impact so many other things.”“I feel like sometimes we just are unaware of how good we could potentially feel. So go find out what that potential is because I promise you, there are tweaks that shifts that can be made to really allow you to feel so much better.”Thanks for listening! If you have any questions that you would like answered in future Q&A episodes, you can ask me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie, or contact me through my website.
