What is the connection between gut health and skin health? Clinical nutritionist Jennifer Fugo talks about beating chronic skin problems and unending gut challenges by discovering missing pieces and creating doable integrative plans. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode129. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Skin challenges and how they are connected to the gutBig triggers for chronic skin rashes and where hormones fall into the mixThe importance of tracking the cycle of rash flaresThe estrogen-histamine connectionHow you can get H. pylori and the steps to healing an H. pylori infectionThe thyroid connection to skin rashesThe problem with topical steroids What products to use for your skin problems and what to avoidDifferent gut infections that might be impacting your skinDietary recommendations for eczema Key Takeaways:The 16 root causes of chronic skin rashes are the following:Microbiome dysbiosis Gut dysfunctionDiet and food reactionsNutritional deficienciesLiver detoxification challengesTraumaUnmanaged stressGenetic implicationsThyroid dysfunctionHormone imbalances.AutoimmunityDrug reactionsMitochondrial dysfunctionHeavy metalsEnvironmental toxinsEnvironmental allergiesWhen we say microbiome dysbiosis, we’re not just talking about what goes on inside the gut but also what happens on the skin. We also have microbiomes in our mouth and in other areas of the body. An imbalance in one spot could be indicative of an imbalance someplace else. A lot of times, gut dysbiosis can drive skin dysbiosis.Gut dysfunction includes any irregularities in the body’s ability to digest and absorb food and eliminate waste properly.High levels of estrogen can cause a lot of histamine problems. When you apply topical steroids, it blunts your immune response, which can lead to more skin infections.Exposure to topical steroids can hijack your adrenal function and throw you in to what’s known as topical steroid withdrawal. Action Steps:Support your liver detoxification.Optimize your gut function.Make sure that you are pooping properly.Get checked for H. pylori.Consider removing fermented foods from your diet.Try supplementing with DAO (diamine oxidase).Go for products with very simple natural ingredients. Jennifer said:“I’m not saying you can’t DIY, but you also have to be realistic. If you’re struggling with a lot of different issues and your quality of life is really compromised at this point and it’s complex, that’s where you might want to ask for some help.”“If you have a lot of pollen allergies, I’d really caution you against getting formulas that have a lot of essential oils in them.”Thanks for listening! The Vagina Monologues - Fertility Awareness Method & Period Health
What exactly is the fertility awareness method? Do you still find it confusing to track your cycle? Understand your cycle better and dive into all things vagina health with certified fertility awareness educator and holistic reproductive health practitioner Lisa Hendrickson-Jack.You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode128. Topics Discussed in this Episode:The birth control pill, its side effects, and the alternatives that you should considerCycle health and ovulationCommon health problems with the menstrual cycle and what to look out forCervical mucus and cervix positioningThe fertility awareness methodThe factors that might affect your temperature readingOvulation predictor kitsSome nutrition and lifestyle strategies that you can implement to optimize your cycle Key Takeaways:With the birth control pill, there are issues with how women have not been informed or not been given the full picture of it. About half of the women, within a year of starting the pill, come off of it because of the side effects. The pill is associated with a whole host of side effects, the most common of which are depression, anxiety, and low libido. For a certain percentage of women, the pill contributes to painful sex, the thinning of the labia, the vaginal opening, and even the shrinkage of the clitoris. The pill is known to deplete a significant number of nutrients including B vitamins.Studies have shown that adolescent girls who are on hormonal birth control are much more likely to also be on antidepressants. The ovulation predictor kit doesn’t confirm that you ovulated. What it does is measure a luteinizing hormone, and the strips are programmed with different thresholds. Action Steps:Consider getting off the pill if you’re on it and find an alternative.Take it into your own hands to learn about your body, and take the responsibility to pass that on to women.Make sure you’re not undereating. Start with 3 square meals a day with a good balance of protein, fat, and low glycemic carbohydrates.Reduce your chemical exposure. Lisa said:“For many women, learning to chart the menstrual cycle and understanding how it changes in relation to overall health makes it a fantastic biomarker to pay attention to.” “The pill is central to feminism. It’s like the symbol of feminism because of what it represents. It represents women being able to take charge of their fertility.” Thanks for listening! Using Nutrition + Superfoods to Heal Your PCOS - Part 2
How can you optimize and support PCOS through nutrition? In this episode, I dish out some strategies that will help you deal with not just PCOS but any hormonal balance at the end of the day.You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode127. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Nutritional strategies to optimize and support PCOSPreparing yourself mentally when it comes to food and your kitchenBuilding a balanced plateWhy snacking isn’t good for youSnack ideas for when you can’t resist itSuperfoodsKey Takeaways:Eating an anti-inflammatory whole foods diet is going to benefit you if you’re dealing with insulin resistance, irregular period, hair loss, fatigue, PMS, menopause, thyroid issues, etc.Healing takes time, and it is not linear. There are going to be so many ups and downs, and it’s so important that you recognize that you’re going to have good days and bad days. All women with PCOS are different, so the approach to healing is not one-size-fits-all. What works for one woman doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you. When it comes to building a balanced plate, there are a few things to focus on: healthy fats, protein, and the right carbohydrates and fiber. The more frequently you eat throughout the day, the more you’re spiking your insulin levels. And the more your insulin spikes, the more it impacts your ovaries and sex hormones. Action Steps:Prepare yourself mentally when it comes to food and your kitchen:Get clear on what it is that you want (i.e. the goals that you want to achieve with your health) and how you really want to feel.Make a commitment to ditch your bad habits.Get your kitchen ready and stock it with healthy food, ingredients, and products.Spend some time planning your meals. Think about your week ahead so that you can start meal-prepping and perhaps batch-cooking.Set realistic expectations for yourself.Don’t compare yourself to somebody else’s journey.Ditch the diet mindset.Other tips to think about:Eat intuitively. Take a few deep breaths before you eat. Don’t rush into your meals. Sit in peace and quiet without distractions.Tune in to your hunger.Appreciate your food.Chew your food well.Build a balanced plate.Figure out the best plan of action for you to move forward in your healing journey. Make sure you’re antibiotic- and hormone-free.Manage your insulin levels.Choose a good-quality protein powder Samantha said:“There’s no harm in going grain-free. And the great thing is, you’ve got lots of options to help you with that.”“I don’t want anybody to ‘diet’. I want us to live it. And that’s what’s going to lead to longevity.” Thanks for listening! But men can also get breast cancer.A study shows that if you get into nature and smell the forest, your body gets an immune boost. The 4 most important contributors to health:NutritionHappinessExerciseSleepHealth is physical, and health is mental. Try for early detection by taking control of your breasts. Make sure you’re checking them every month. When you’re suspicious of something, go to your doctor. Tanya said:“We have to be optimistic. We have to believe in ourselves and believe in our body’s ability to heal.”“Generally, you’ve got to take your health into your own hands. Take your breasts, literally, into your own hands… I want every woman out there to know it’s so important. Don’t be afraid. Just Dive in there and learn your body.” “If you can accept that change is inevitable and you don’t fight your reality and you make the best of your situation -- and if you can even make yourself smile and laugh a little bit through it, then you’ve learned a powerful lesson.” Thanks for listening! Understanding the Four Types of PCOS
How much do you know about PCOS? In this episode, I’m going to break it down to help you get a better understanding of the four different types of PCOS and talk about the symptoms that are often associated with them. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode125. Topics Discussed in this Episode:What is PCOSWhat causes PCOSThe 4 types of PCOS and their symptomsTests that you can do for PCOS Key Takeaways:Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine system disorders affecting women and affects about 1 in 10 women of child-bearing age.The principal symptom of PCOS is typically irregular periods. Other symptoms include excess facial or body hair, thinning hair, infertility, adult acne, anxiety, brain fog, fatigue, food cravings, hair loss, headaches, inflammation, insulin resistance or diabetes, low progesterone, pelvic pain, periods with no ovulation, recurring miscarriages, and weight gain.Contrary to the name, ovarian cysts don’t cause PCOS. Ovarian cysts are a symptom of the hormonal chaos that’s happening in the body that’s associated with PCOS, but the presence of cysts alone is not enough to diagnose PCOS.The 4 types of PCOS:Insulin-resistant PCOSPost-pill PCOSInflammatory PCOSAdrenal PCOSInsulin-resistant PCOS accounts for up to 70% of cases where there is a decreased ability to manage your blood sugar properly.Post-pill PCOS is often caused by a surge in androgen after you quit hormonal birth control.Chronic inflammation can suppress ovulation and stimulate your ovaries to make more androgen. An overproduction of insulin can do the same thing. If your DHEAS is elevated but your testosterone and other androgenic hormones are in the normal range, this could indicate adrenal PCOS. Action Steps:Work with a qualified practitioner and ask for appropriate testing like the c-reactive protein (CRP) test. Samantha said:“Identifying your PCOS type can really help you to discover your root cause and what steps you can take to support your body.”“Don’t guess. Do some testing and really work with a qualified practitioner.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements:Join our Healthy Hormones Monthly Recipe Club for $9 a month! Q&A: Is the copper IUD safe + Periods & Poops + Is Soy safe + Navigating Period Pain
Welcome to another Q&A episode! This time I’m going to answer your questions about using the copper IUD, whether it’s safe to eat phytochemicals, what strategies you can implement to deal with period pain, and more. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode121. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Why the copper IUD is safeSome of the side effects of using the copper IUDEating soy and phytoestrogensHow your menstrual cycle affects your bowel movementHealing the gutWhat causes dysmenorrhea and how to deal with it Key Takeaways:The copper IUD is a small t-shaped device that your gynecologist would insert into your uterus through the cervix. It’s non-hormonal so it may be your best choice. It’s 99.2% effective for up to 10 years. With copper IUD, there have been a significant number of women who have found they have really painful periods as a side effect, and sometimes longer periods with heavy bleeding. There’s also an increased chance of bacterial vaginosis when using the copper IU because of the disruption in the vaginal microbiome. There’s a slightly increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease as well.Xenoestrogens are one of the most abundant endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen. They are found in tons of different types of chemical products.Phytoestrogens are natural xenoestrogens derived from plants. They are able to bind to estrogen receptors.Soy and flax seeds are the biggest and most well-known phytoestrogens.Phytoestrogens are much weaker than your own estrogen or any synthetic estrogen. Depending on your individual biology and natural hormone levels, they can have an estrogenic effect or even an anti-estrogenic effect. So when they bind to your estrogen receptors, they can block more potent estrogens from binding instead. This is a good thing for some women because it will reduce symptoms of estrogen dominance.Organic soy consumed in small amounts has been shown to reduce estrogen dominance in some women. For others, even a modest amount of soy might be too much and can lead to significant menstrual problems like longer cycles, heavier periods, and more cramping.Dysmenorrhea can be caused by the following:EndometriosisBenign tumors found in the female pelvisOvarian cystsUsing the copper IUD Action Step:Consider using the copper IUD instead of the pill or a hormonal contraceptive.Tune in to your body when you decide to take phytoestrogens and be conscious of its effects.Experiment with food and see what works for your body. Just pay attention symptomatically how you feel.Be conscious of how you’re taking care of the gut and what you’re eating. Samantha said:“It’s not necessarily just about the food. It’s more about the food and the woman -- how is that food specifically working with you -- because it’s not a one size fits all when it comes to hormonal health.”“If your menstruation is intense, heavy, and uncomfortable, and even if you’re fine the rest of the month, still, it shouldn’t be something that is that intense and uncomfortable where it’s totally knocking you out and you’re crying in pain.” Thanks for listening! Behind the Scenes of Starting and Growing My Business
Are you curious about what it took to get Holistic Wellness off the ground? Tune in as I share what went on behind the scenes and how I’ve grown my business to what it is today. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode120. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Why I decided to go to nutrition schoolThe challenge of getting clientsFinding my nicheThe benefits I got from working in a health food store and working as a sales repGetting into social mediaCreating my own programThe beginning phases of Holistic WellnessGetting clear on what I needed to offer and how long I needed to coach and support womenGrowing and scaling my businessDiving into podcastingWriting my book Key Takeaways:Business cards are not the best way to get business. Handing one out to somebody in the hopes that they’re going to follow up with you is not the ideal way to go. It’s your responsibility to follow up with those prospects and not the other way around. You need somebody you can talk to, someone who can take an overview of your business, look at the things you’re doing, and give you direction.Growing your business is a lot about listening to your audience, listening to your community, and finding what they really want and what they’re struggling with. It’s important that you are integrity yourself. This will attract people to you. Action Step:Be clear on what you want from life, on what you want in a career, and show up for yourself.Hire a coach to help you.Find your niche. Samantha said:“That human one-to-one connection and that one-to-one coaching really help you to skyrocket and get so much faster results than anything else.”“The universe did for me what I couldn’t do for myself.” Thanks for listening!
