Environmental Toxins that Harm Your Thyroid
How can we take better care of our thyroid health? Let's take a look at it from the perspective of environmental toxins. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode149. Topics Discussed in this Episode:What the thyroid is and how it worksThyroid disorders and diseasesDiagnostic testing for thyroid healthEnvironmental toxins and how we can avoid themDetoxification Key Takeaways:The thyroid is governing the overall metabolism in your body and plays a role in brain development, breathing, heart and nervous system functions, body temperature, muscle strength, skin dryness, menstrual cycle health, and cholesterol levels.Thyroid function can be affected by a variety of factors such as genetics, nutrient deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, pregnancy, underlying infections, liver disease, medications, and oral contraceptives.Thyroid disorders are more common in women than men.Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid is underactive and often develops later in life. This leads to a general loss of energy, potential weight gain, difficulties in concentration, constipation, sensitivity to cold, changes in your skin, issues with your voice, dry and brittle hair, decreased libido, and in some cases, depression.Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system is attacking the thyroid gland.Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid overactive and speeds up the energy metabolism of the body. This leads to hot flashes, sweating, trembling, weight loss, diarrhea, hair loss, nervousness, hyperactivity, emotional instability, irritability, insomnia, restlessness, and in some cases, bulging of the eyes.Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition causing a form of hyperthyroidism. Thyroid auto-antibodies develop when a person's immune system mistakenly targets and attacks the thyroid gland. This can lead to chronic inflammation, tissue damage, and autoimmune disorders. The toxins that affect the thyroid include the following:Phthalates - typically found in plastics and some personal care itemsPerchlorate - found in food and waterPolybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) - found in breastmilk, electronics, cars, and buildingsPerfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - found in non-stick pans, water-resistant coatings, stain-resistant carpets, and microwave popcorn bagsOrganophosphate pesticides - found in agricultural spaces that end up affecting the produce that we eat Action Steps:Get diagnostic testing for your thyroid health.Use glass instead of plastic containers for packing your meals.Read the labels of personal care products and look into product ratings.Avoid using non-stick pans and be conscious about wearing water-resistant clothes and accessories.Buy fruits and vegetables that are treated with the least amount of pesticides.Detoxify. Samantha said:“Your thyroid is governing the metabolism overall in your body. Weight is a part of that, but it's not the only piece... Metabolism means more than just weight gain and weight loss.""Sometimes your antibodies are just going to go up and down for no real apparent reason. You can't just pinpoint one thing that's going to trigger [it]." Thanks for listening!Important Announcements: If you haven’t downloaded our FREE 5 Day Sugar Detox Challenge yet, download it now! The Benefits of Acupuncture for Stress Management & the Importance of Boosting Circulation
How are you managing your stress? Dr. Jannine Krause talks about the benefits of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in supporting stress management and overall health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode148. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Acupuncture and its benefitsThe effects of stress on hormonesDietary principles in the Chinese medicine cultureSimple strategies to help lower stressWhy you shouldn't do HIIT workouts every dayCupping and when you should get itSimple everyday things that we can do to boost circulationKey Takeaways:Stress puts us in a "stuck" mode, which means we're not in a state of flow. With acupuncture, what we're doing is we're trying to get blood flow going. We can use acupuncture near the uterus, near the ovaries, to help the body regulate. We even have points in our ears that can help the hormones regulate and try to get that blood flow going. Most of the time when we're getting stressed out, there's a need that we have that's not getting met.Cupping is the use of suction to bring blood flow to a broad superficial area of skin tissue and muscle.Action Steps:Get acupuncture treatment.Mid-cycle to the start of your period, make sure you stay warm and keep things warmer for the body with the food that you eat.Take the time to slow down. Work on your schedule and look at where you can put in a break and do something fun.Make sure your body knows when your workout is over through breathwork.Think of your evenings as a time to reconnect with yourself. Have fun!Consider getting cupping treatment if you have tight muscles.Get circulation moving through play and fluid movement. Jannine said:“Spend some time chilling. I think a lot of us, unfortunately, have lost that ability to stop moving and just breathe for a minute.""I call it the root of all evil if we don’t have blood flow moving.” Thanks for listening!Important Announcements: Join our 4-Week Spring Detox Program here! How to Naturally Boost Energy and Recover From Burnout and Fatigue
How does energy impact our hormones, and how can we manage it? Certified nutritional practitioner and holistic lifestyle coach Bryan Hardy shares some tips and strategies to reverse the cycle of burnout and fatigue in our lives. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode147. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Bryan’s health journeyThe tricks that people think are helping them get their energy backWhat you can do to better support your energyThe connection between energy and hormonesThe long-term effects of not addressing burnout and fatigueEnergy-cultivating practicesThe difference between men and women when it comes to addressing the issue of energy Key Takeaways:When it comes to supporting your energy, creating a little space for yourself and giving yourself a break can make massive changes over time.If you have reduced melatonin, your sleep won’t be as restorative, and your body isn’t going to do as much detoxifying and regenerating work. As a result, when you get up in the morning, you’re very unlikely to have those little spikes of serotonin and cortisol that tell your body to get up and go.Hormones and neurotransmitters work in balance, and they have rhythms such as the circadian rhythm. When you’re lacking in energy, your immune system gets downregulated, and so you become more prone to getting sick. We all have something that we’re here to do, offer, share, cultivate, or create. And when we don’t have the energy to do that, it’s going to be a massive struggle to try and birth whatever it might be. Action Steps:At the end of the day, do something that’s not stimulating and allow your mind to truly relax. Nothing does that better than being in nature. So leave your phone for a while and go for a walk.Supplement with ashwagandha (2 to 5 grams before going to bed).Take medicinal mushrooms.Supplement with a vitamin B complex.Practice grounding.Practice qigong.Do the Legs Up the Wall Yoga pose. Bryan said:“There are tools, and there are things outside of the mainstream paradigm that can definitely support us. And often, it’s the only way that we actually get to the root of what’s really going on.”“Having this fatigue and burnout pattern going on really holds us back from doing what we’re here to do and from being who we’re here to be.”Thanks for listening! Finding Your Voice, Values, Truth and Living a Life that is Authentically You
What does it mean to live authentically? Transformational coach Dr. Laura Foster talks about the most important relationship in your life -- the one that you have with yourself -- and what you can do to cultivate self-mastery that will lead to powerful change. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode146. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Becoming a transformational coachThe brain connection vs the soul connectionWhat it means to live authenticallySelf-mastery and how to cultivate itSelf-compassion and why it’s essential to self-masteryKey Takeaways:The soul connection is linked to your intuition. It’s that deep inner knowing within you. When you are living true to your values, it feels effortless. When you have to show up in your life in a way that isn’t true to who you are, it takes energy. We tell ourselves stories all the time. We need to be aware that all these stories come from past beliefs and other people. Obligations are interesting because a lot of them are perceived. They’re not necessarily real. It’s that we’ve created a rule for ourselves that we have to show up a certain way in our life. What keeps you up at night is the resistance to the choices that you want to be making. It’s not the decisions you’re making but the ones that you’re not making.Living authentically is honoring and embracing who you are and living your values. It’s being able to change your mind as you understand yourself better. It’s knowing what your truth is and owning it. It’s knowing who you’re living your life for.Self-mastery is not a destination. It’s being able to recognize, understand, and accept your whole self and mastering this connection with who you are at the core of your being.Self-compassion is essential to self-mastery.Action Steps:Ask yourself great questions (i.e. Who are you living for? If you can do anything, what would you do?)Double down on self-care and self-love, and trust that you are getting to the place where you want to go.Understand what you stand for so that you can stand for something.Create healthy boundaries in your relationships.Commit to your truth and learn to speak it to the world.Define what authentic living means to you.Do something outside of your thinking head, i.e. journaling, meditating, hiking, etc., to get your intuition flowing.Let go of the things that are no longer serving you. Laura said:“You wear a mask when you show up in your life outside of who you truly are. And how far out of alignment that is, is the degree to which you are burning yourself out.”“When you ask questions, you open the portal to your own answers. It’s that reconnecting and understanding that you do have so much more information and connection to your truth inside of you.”Thanks for listening!Important Announcements: If you haven’t downloaded our FREE 5 Day Sugar Detox Challenge yet, download it now! Low Estrogen: Symptoms & Solutions
Are you experiencing symptoms of low estrogen? What causes it, and how does it affect your body? And more importantly, what can you do about it?You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode145. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Estrogen vs progesteroneThe different roles that estrogen plays in the bodyHow low estrogen affects:Weight and appetiteMoodBone densityHot flashes, night sweats, and insomniaFertilityGluten intoleranceWhy our estrogen levels dropThe benefits of getting the DUTCH testWhat we can do to support our estrogen levels Key Takeaways:As we start to age, we have a lot of hormonal declines that start anywhere between the ages of 35 to 50 and our estrogen will dip. The symptoms associated with low estrogen can also be associated with so many other things. The more knowledge you have, the better you can do for your health and your hormones.Progesterone doesn’t make you fat. All hormones play a role in weight gain and weight loss.Estrogen is that hormone that gives you that femininity. It has over 300 different functions in the body and is the ultimate multitasker.Estrogen helps to build and maintain the structure and function of the vaginal, urethral, and vulvar tissues.Estradiol is the estrogen in the highest concentration during a woman’s reproductive years. From puberty until perimenopause, 80% of the estrogen in the body is estradiol, 10% is estriol (the main estrogen of pregnancy), and the other is 10% estrone (the main estrogen of menopause).Low estrogen can affect so many areas that are near and dear to a woman’s heart like sleep, sex, fertility, appetite, and weight. The lower your estrogen is, the hungrier you might become. Action Steps:Get hormone testing.Support your bone density by lifting weights and eating calcium-rich foods.Supplement with vitamin E to reduce hot flashes.Try acupuncture.Consider going on a gluten-free diet.Be conscious of your caffeine intake.Cut back on alcohol, or eliminate it altogether.Add flax seeds to your diet.Have sex and orgasm more.Supplement with magnesium.Don’t exercise too much.Take herbs such as maca, red ginseng, hops, and valerian. Samantha said:“Low estrogen can affect so many areas that are near and dear to a woman’s heart like sleep, sex, fertility, appetite, and weight.”“Test so that you don’t guess, and you can really strategize what you’re going to do in terms of nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle.” Thanks for listening! Detoxing from Heavy Metals and Protecting Yourself Against EMF's with the Harmoni Pendant
How can we protect ourselves from EMFs? Functional diagnostic nutritionist Wendy Myers talks about the Harmoni Pendant and how it works as a shield to protect us from EMFs and the negative effects of stress. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode144. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Bioenergetics, energy medicine, and healing with frequenciesHow we get exposed to heavy metalsSymptoms of heavy metal exposureSimple ways we can optimize and support daily detoxificationThe Harmoni Pendant -- how it works and how it’s different from other EMF protection devicesKey Takeaways:We get exposed to heavy metals in chemicals in the air, food, and water. Even if you’re drinking perfectly filtered water, you can get exposed to it in the shower. Even if you’re eating an organic diet, pesticide-free food doesn’t mean it’s heavy metal-free.Symptoms of heavy metal exposure include brain fog, fatigue, trouble with sleep, and weight gain.A lot of metals poison our mitochondria, our thyroid, and our adrenals.Your liver is the frontline of digestion, immunity, and detoxification. It has to function properly to metabolize excess hormones. How the Harmoni Pendant works is it has four holes that communicate information to your body to clear the energy field. Once the energy field is cleared, your body works more efficiently.Everything on the planet has an energy field with a frequency that can be measured. These energy fields are energy waves. Action Steps:Strategies that you can implement to support daily detoxification:Take care of your liver by eating a healthy diet. Don’t bombard it with sugar and industrial seed oils that are very inflammatory. Drink lemon water to start your day and eat bitter foods like beets and artichokes.Do a coffee enema.Detoxify with infrared saunas and ionic foot baths.Eat a lot of fiber.Mitigate the effects of EMFs by wearing a Harmoni Pendant. Wendy said:“[Heavy metal exposure] is really impossible to avoid no matter what measures you take. No matter how perfect your house is, you’re still going to be exposed to heavy metals and chemicals.”“Even if you’re wearing a [Harmoni Pendant], it does help mitigate the effects of EMF, but it’s not the only thing you can do. You need to mitigate EMF in your environment as well.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements: If you haven’t downloaded our FREE 5 Day Sugar Detox Challenge yet, download it now! Topics Discussed in this Episode:How Asian medicine differs from Western medicineHow Asian and Western medicines complement each otherHow scars affect the body and the type of treatment necessary to correct themThe body’s electrical systemTreating scars with light laser oilSigns of nutritional deficienciesThe best form of testing with parasites and the best action to resolve themAcupuncture Key Takeaways:Eastern medicine focuses on the electrical system and the whole body. Western medicine, on the other hand, focuses on symptomatic relief.Eastern medicine deals with the core problems using the tools of food as medicine, herbal medicine, and lifestyle changes. When you get a scar, there’s a disconnect on your skin. And if there’s a trauma to the body, then there’s internal scarring. If we don’t restore the electrical flow through laser treatment and through oil applied to the scar itself, the brain will remain disconnected from that part of the body.Anything that shows up in your skin, your hair, your nails, and your tongue can be a sign of nutritional deficiencies.Basically, 99% of our problems are nutritional-based.80% of the population has parasites. The key symptoms are any kind of skin problems and digestive problems such as bloating, gas, and IBS.Acupuncture is a way to activate your electrical system. Action Steps:Check your scars and put some wheat germ oil on them. You can also have them checked by a kinesiologist.Eat enough good fats. They are the basis of good hormones.Exercise daily.Consider getting an acupuncture treatment.Get on a good nutritional program.Implement these everyday strategies to avoid getting a parasitic infection:Have your pets tested and make sure you give them filtered water.Rinse and soak your vegetables in vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes.Consume lots of garlic. Scott said:“I’ve been striving ever since, looking for answers. And I always say it’s about ancient medicine -- studying the ancient techniques -- and modern technology to get the best answers.”“Most people are like walking blocks of Swiss cheese. They have all these holes for their missing deficiencies. If you don’t fill in the holes, you’ll just never be whole.” Thanks for listening! The Morning Adrenal Cocktail
Do you get that tired but wired feeling? The Morning Adrenal Cocktail can help. Find out how to make it and optimize your adrenals. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode141. Topics Discussed in this Episode:The 3 basic components of the Morning Adrenal Cocktail and how they benefit the adrenalsThe two ways you can make the adrenal cocktail Key Takeaways:You can start your day with the Morning Adrenal Cocktail. But you might need it two or three times a day depending on what’s going on with your adrenals, how you’re feeling, and the symptoms you might be having.Around 3 p.m. is often when a lot of people get that cortisol dip. When your cortisol drops at that time of day, that’s when you start to feel very tired and sluggish. It’s an opportune time to take your adrenal supplementation and your adrenal cocktail. The 3 basic components of the Morning Adrenal Cocktail are vitamin C, salt, and potassium. It’s really important that you get enough sodium in your diet. The more stressed we are, the more sodium we end up losing from our cells. And that causes our cells to dump out potassium as well. That delicate balance of sodium and potassium affects the symptoms that we experience with adrenal fatigue. Action Steps: Make the Morning Adrenal Cocktail: The key when making this drink is to make sure you have all three components- vitamin C + salt + potassium. If your trace minerals does not contain potassium, make sure to add in coconut water or find an electrolyte powder or trace mineral liquid that contains potassium. OPTION #1250-500ml of water1 packet of ENER-C sugar free Orange 1/2 tsp trace minerals1/3 cup coconut water (optional - use if your trace minerals does not contain potassium) OPTION #21/4-1/3 cup of fresh-pressed orange juice1/2 tsp sea salt or trace minerals1/3 cup coconut water Samantha said:“Less sodium in the system means that there’s more stress in the system ultimately.”“[The Morning Adrenal Cocktail] really does work wonders. Make sure to get in that sodium-potassium balance. It is so key.” Thanks for listening!Important Announcements: If you haven’t downloaded our FREE 5 Day Sugar Detox Challenge yet, download it now! The Liver + Gut + Thyroid Connection and Optimizing Hormones with the Right Labs
Do you have a health puzzle that you’re trying to solve? Find out why running some functional lab testings is critical to getting to the root of your health issues. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode140 Topics Discussed in this Episode:Functional lab tests and why they’re importantThyroid function tests and what you should be looking forThe gut, liver, and thyroid connectionSome healing strategies for optimizing your gut healthUsing castor oil packsDealing with mold toxicity and detoxing the bodyHealthy hormone hacks Key Takeaways:Functional lab tests help us to take a deeper dive look at the physiological aspects of the body. They help us connect the dots and see all the pieces of the puzzle to understand the bigger picture of what’s going on with a person’s health. There’s a huge portion of your thyroid hormone that’s converted in the liver and the intestinal tissue. These tissues need to be healthy in order to convert that thyroid hormone optimally. At the same time, certain nutrients are required for this to happen. If you have a leaky gut, poor digestion, or an inflamed intestinal tract, you’re not going to be absorbing nutrients as well as you could to support thyroid function and hormone conversion. One of the things that can trigger an autoimmune process or hypothyroid type of issues is elevated estrogen levels. We want to make sure the liver can move those toxins out of the body. Our body has an internal clock based on the sun and the moon cycles. That’s what we refer to as our circadian rhythm which is related to our cortisol rhythm. Action Steps:Implement these strategies to optimize your gut:Get food sensitivity tests.Get a stool sample test.Take foods and supplements that help restore the integrity of the intestinal lining. If you’re dealing with mold infestation, make sure the mold is removed properly and stop the exposure.Incorporate these healthy hormone hacks into your day:Have a cup of green tea.Fill up with fat. Make sure you get enough good quality sleep. Jenn said:“Fat has gotten such a bad rep for so long, and we’re finally starting to turn the corner on that. That fat is actually healthy for us, and we actually need fats in order to make hormones.”“Nature is so critical to our overall well-being… Even being out in the cold is beneficial for us.”Thanks for listening!
