Session 336: Black Girl Nerds
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Can you think of a time when your nerdy interests were healing for you? It could be that comfort anime that always brings your spirits up, the video game you play when you want to escape the world, or that time when you knew you looked good as hell cosplaying at a convention with your besties. To chat with TBG about all things fandom & wellness, today we're joined by author, worldbuilder, and nerdy creator Jacque Aye. Jacque is a vocal supporter of mental health awareness and self-care amongst Black women, advocating for those suffering from depression and social anxiety. In her fiction work, she writes about women with a surrealist, magical touch. Some of the themes that came up in today’s conversation include how to cultivate a community within fandom spaces, the importance of showing up as one’s true, nerdy self, and the ways in which our favorite games and TV shows can make talking about mental health issues more accessible. Session 335: Navigating Painful Emotions Around the Holidays
While Andy Williams famously proclaimed this to be the most wonderful time of the year, we know that the holiday season can be more than a little stressful for many of us. Whether we’re navigating changing traditions, grieving the loss of a family member, or considering opting out of the holidays entirely, the question becomes how to communicate these feelings to our family members, friends, and others we may usually celebrate this time with. Joining me to help sort out these holiday-induced stressors is returning guest Nedra Glover Tawaab. Nedra is a licensed therapist, sought-after relationship expert, and the author of New York Times bestsellers Set Boundaries, Find Peace and Drama Free. Nedra has appeared as an expert on Red Table Talk, The Breakfast Club, Good Morning America, and the CBS Morning Show, just to name a few. During our conversation, Nedra and I discuss ways you might share a grievance with a family member without severing the relationship, navigating holiday-induced grief, and communicating a change in tradition or a decision to stay home for the holidays. Session 334: Brainspotting
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. In passing, you’ve likely heard the phrase, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” But did you know that there is an emerging body-based modality that works to process client trauma through movement in the eyes? It’s called ‘Brainspotting,’ and today’s guest is here to share all about it. Nicole Bryant is a licensed Mental Health clinician practicing in North Carolina who specializes in neuro-psychotherapy and is currently a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner. In our conversation today, we discuss the science behind Brainspotting, how Brainspotting can serve as an alternative for clients dissatisfied with talk therapy, and why she believes communities of color could benefit most from this treatment.
