Head and Tail Commands in the Terminal
When you’re looking through files sometimes you just need to see the first or last lines of the document to see if it’s the one you need or get the info you want. The ‘head’ and ‘tail’ command will do just that.
‘head’ grabs the first lines of a file and ‘tail’ displays the last lines.
As an example you could type head test.txt to get the first 10 lines.
Or use the switch -n followed by a number to print any number of lines. Example: head -n 15 test.txt will give you 15 beginning lines.
Tail does the same thing but starting from the bottom.

Tips & Tricks:
This week in Ryan’s courses they were going over vi/vim: “I have to be honest, I was dreading it a little bit. But, after going through the course I felt a lot more comfortable using vi/vim and the keyboard shortcuts made a little more sense. However, there was some additional homework they suggested which is executed by typing ‘vimtutor’ in your terminal. This is a 20-30 minute tutorial that is hands on using the commands you can run through on your own if you’re wanting to get more comfortable with vi/vim.”

Tips & Tricks:
CTRL + C to abort a command in Linux
Type ‘reset’ to clear the terminal just like you opened a new window
Type ‘clear’ to clear all text from a terminal
Ctrl + L which is a shortcut that works the same way as “clear” command
CTRL + D to close the Terminal window
History – type history in a terminal window to see a numbered list of the commands you have previously typed. I don’t know about you but I always just tapped the up arrow to get to the command I wanted. This way, just mouse scroll back through the list until you see the command you want and then simply type ! followed by the number in the list ie !6 or !132
If you have a large history – try searching – Ctrl + R to invoke “reverse-i-search.” Type a letter – like s – and you’ll get a match for the most recent command in your history that starts with s. Keep typing to narrow your match. When you hit the jackpot, press Enter to execute the suggested command. Each press of Ctrl+R will cycle through other commands that might match.
Ctrl + Arrow Keys (left or right) – to jump between segments of a command
Ctrl + K – to delete everything after the cursor location
Ctrl + U – to delete everything before the cursor location
