VIM Editor can be used for more than just a text editor. You can also use VIM to list out contents of compressed archive files. The best part is it doesn’t require you to remember any switches to do so. Simple $ vim textfile.tar and it will list out the contents for you within the editor.

Alien is a program that converts between the rpm, dpkg, stampede slp, and slackware tgz file formats. If you want to use a package from another distribution than the one you have installed on your system, you can use alien to convert it to your preferred package format and install it.
Tips & Tricks:
Use the nohup command to ssh into a server run a command and be able to let that command continue to run while you get to logout and move onto something else.
nohup basically is a command to ignore the hangup signal.
To use it just login to an SSH session and type $ nohup (your command) and an &
Then feel free to exit out of the SSH session and come back later.

Use ‘tail’ to monitor logs real-time for bug reporting or system analysis. This will provide you updates that occur and could be invaluable for bug reports or monitoring of user activity or changes on your system.
As an example:
For openSUSE, Rhel you can use:
sudo tail -f -n 6 /var/log/messages
For Debian based distros
sudo tail -f -n 6 /var/log/syslog
The ‘f’ switch tells it to follow
The ‘n’ switch tells it to display last N’th number of lines
