TSC_057 Scott Callaham, Learning Aramaic

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Dr. Scott Callaham <- Back to Episodes Scott Callaham, Learning Aramaic Scott Callaham, Lecturer in Old Testament at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Singapore, is a friend of the Lanier Theological Library.  He has spent a good bit of time in the library and with our staff as he has been working on his primer for biblical Aramaic entitled Biblical Aramaic for Biblical Interpreters (Glossahouse, 2021).  While the Old Testament  is mostly in Hebrew, there are sections of Genesis, Jeremiah, Ezra and Daniel written in Aramaic, a sister language to Hebrew. Dr. Callaham has come up with an ingenious way to build on one’s knowledge of Hebrew to learn another language, and he stops by to talk with David Capes about it on “The Stone Chapel.”  He also has the distinction of being the first person to write a teaching grammar for Aramaic in Chinese, the language of Singapore.  Soon he begins another project on www.dailydoseofaramaic.com.  He talks about both projects during this 20 minute podcast.  We are very proud of Scott and look forward to having him and his family back to the Lanier Theological Library.   The post TSC_057 Scott Callaham, Learning Aramaic first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_067 Roche Coleman, Shame & Guilt Psalm 32

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Dr. Roche Coleman <- Back to Episodes Roche Coleman, Shame and Guilt in Psalm 32 Roche Coleman is Senior Pastor of the Impact Church in the Woodlands.  He is a frequent patron at the library; in fact, he just finished his PhD at the University of Pretoria spending a good bit of time studying and writing at the Lanier Theological Library.  He joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his ministry and to talk about his dissertation which we think soon will become a book.  Shame and guilt are “strange emotions” according to Dr. Coleman precisely because they go against the grain of the imago dei(image of God) in us.  We are made for honor and dignity, yet we find shame and guilt to be a debilitating duo when it comes to our lives.  Psalm 32, a Davidic psalm, is written against the backdrop of a time when the king faced soul-crushing guilt over his sin.  But even as it begins in pain; it ends in joy.  For those who struggle with the weight of sin, shame, and guilt, this podcast is for you.   The post TSC_067 Roche Coleman, Shame & Guilt Psalm 32 first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_066 Pamela Vandewalker, “Teeny Tykes and Tunes”

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Pam Vandewalker <- Back to Episodes Pam Vandewalker, Teeny Tykes and Tunes Pamela Vandewalker has an interesting job. She directs worship programming at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, GA, a worshipping community of roughly 7000 people. She is the author of many books and a composer of about 75 hymns for children.  She stopped by recently to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” about her life, her battles with cancer, and how hymns fed her soul and encouraged her through the toughest battles of life.  She is a strong advocate of singing and making music in the homes because it imprints on the lives of our children. Churches can and should do more to train up parents in creating music makers not just music consumers at home. TSC_064 Robert Morgan, Then Sings My Soul

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Robert Morgan <- Back to Episodes Robert Morgan, Then Sings My Soul Robert Morgan, teaching pastor at the Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, TN, has authored more than twenty books.  He lectured at the Stone Chapel on August 21, 2021. While at the library, he talked with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel Podcasts” about his series, Then Sings My Soul published by Thomas Nelson,, particularly the third volume in that series. Morgan has been dubbed “the dean of American hymnody” by our own Dr. Capes and is doing more than anyone we know to promote the singing of music old and new in our churches. Older people, he says, need to sing the latest music, and young people need to sing the legacy music. Rather than segregating traditional and contemporary services, which effectively creates different congregations, Morgan advocates for intergenerational worship and training young and old alike to appreciate the music of other generations. TSC_063 Andy LePeau, Mark through Old Testament Eyes

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Andy LePeau <- Back to Episodes Andy LePeau, Mark through Old Testament Eyes Andy LePeau has been in academic publishing for many years with InterVarsity Press.  He is also a talented writer and the author of a new book with Kregel Academic entitled Mark through Old Testament Eyes.  He serves as series editor for this new background and application commentary called “Through Old Testament Eyes” and stops by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” about the series and about some of the things he discovered about Mark’s Gospel after teaching it for over fifteen years. The book begins: “The New Testament writers were Old Testament people.”  He goes on to demonstrate the many ways the Old Testament shaped the minds and hearts of the first Christ followers. He estimates that 90-95% of the Gospel is clarified when we understand the Old Testament view of the God and his people.  It is a terrific book and an impressive series.  In case you were wondering, you can find it at the Lanier Theological Library.  To learn more about Andy, go to his blog “Andy Unedited”: www.andyunedited.com                     The post TSC_063 Andy LePeau, Mark through Old Testament Eyes first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_062 Kevin Grasso, Biblingo.org

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Kevin Grasso <- Back to Episodes Kevin Grasso, Biblingo.org Kevin Grasso and Nick Messmer are co-founders of Biblingo.org, a website dedicated to helping people learn and retain Greek and Hebrew. Kevin stopped by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” regarding their project and how their approach differs from other programs or website.  The bottom line is this: they draw from some of the best practices and literature on second language acquisition. Spend just 30 minutes a day and you will find yourself learning Greek or Hebrew and retaining it in ways you had not before.  Even 15 minutes a day will help you down the road.  They encourage students not to memorize words or paradigms but internalize the language.  Their innovative approach is catching on around the world.  The costs to learn Greek or Hebrew with biblingo.com for one year are about ½ the costs of one credit hour at a college or university.  $18 gives you complete access to learn one language for a month.  And if you have already taken Greek or Hebrew, the site will help you keep up with and improve your biblical languages skills.  Want to learn Greek and/or Hebrew and learn it for LIFE: www.biblingo.org                     The post TSC_062 Kevin Grasso, Biblingo.org first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_060 Vincent Bacote, Reckoning with Race

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Vincent Bacote <- Back to Episodes Vincent Bacote, Reckoning with Race Dr. Vince Bacote, Associate Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College, joins David Capes to talk about his new book, Reckoning with Race and Performing the Good News: In Search of a Better Evangelical Theology (Brill, 2020).  Dr. Bacote is interested in rehabilitating the evangelical movement when it comes to how racial minorities fit into its life.  For too long the good news, while central to evangelical theology and life, has not always been good for minorities.  The polarization now in the west is due in large part because majorities and minorities are speaking past each another rather than finding a place at the table for one another.  According to Bacote, theology and ethics belong together and are not separate spheres of life and thought.  After discussing the meaning of “racism” and “critical race theory,” Bacote offers concrete proposals for what serious Christians and a thoughtful church can do next.  To learn more about Dr. Vince Bacote and his work, go to his website www.vincentbacote.com.                 The post TSC_060 Vincent Bacote, Reckoning with Race first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_059 Steve Stewart, The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Steve Stewart <- Back to Episodes Steve Stewart, The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis Steve Stewart—pastor, church leader, and founder of Impact Nations—joined David Capes to talk about God’s work in his life and Impact Nations, an international organization dedicated to the whole gospel which means impacting whole persons, spiritually, economically, educationally and socially.  Out of the Covid pandemic and the racial, political predicaments washing over us, Steve has written a terrific book entitled The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis (Impact Nations Publishing, 2020).  Like many others Steve has found solace, direction and inspiration in that first part of Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount.  Steve talks with David about how one beatitude leads to the next, and how the gospel is not just about who’s going to heaven?  It is about the whole person and what God intends for us here and now.  That is why Steve says the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount deal with Kingdom citizens doing the right thing for the right reason.  The beatitudes are both an invitation to share in God’s life and a paradox.  Be sure to get his book and read it carefully.  If you want to know more about Steve’s work at Impact Nations, you can do so at www.impactnations.com.               The post TSC_059 Steve Stewart, The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.
