TSC_064 Robert Morgan, Then Sings My Soul

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Robert Morgan <- Back to Episodes Robert Morgan, Then Sings My Soul Robert Morgan, teaching pastor at the Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, TN, has authored more than twenty books.  He lectured at the Stone Chapel on August 21, 2021. While at the library, he talked with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel Podcasts” about his series, Then Sings My Soul published by Thomas Nelson,, particularly the third volume in that series. Morgan has been dubbed “the dean of American hymnody” by our own Dr. Capes and is doing more than anyone we know to promote the singing of music old and new in our churches. Older people, he says, need to sing the latest music, and young people need to sing the legacy music. Rather than segregating traditional and contemporary services, which effectively creates different congregations, Morgan advocates for intergenerational worship and training young and old alike to appreciate the music of other generations. TSC_063 Andy LePeau, Mark through Old Testament Eyes

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Andy LePeau <- Back to Episodes Andy LePeau, Mark through Old Testament Eyes Andy LePeau has been in academic publishing for many years with InterVarsity Press.  He is also a talented writer and the author of a new book with Kregel Academic entitled Mark through Old Testament Eyes.  He serves as series editor for this new background and application commentary called “Through Old Testament Eyes” and stops by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” about the series and about some of the things he discovered about Mark’s Gospel after teaching it for over fifteen years. The book begins: “The New Testament writers were Old Testament people.”  He goes on to demonstrate the many ways the Old Testament shaped the minds and hearts of the first Christ followers. He estimates that 90-95% of the Gospel is clarified when we understand the Old Testament view of the God and his people.  It is a terrific book and an impressive series.  In case you were wondering, you can find it at the Lanier Theological Library.  To learn more about Andy, go to his blog “Andy Unedited”: www.andyunedited.com                     The post TSC_063 Andy LePeau, Mark through Old Testament Eyes first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_062 Kevin Grasso, Biblingo.org

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Kevin Grasso <- Back to Episodes Kevin Grasso, Biblingo.org Kevin Grasso and Nick Messmer are co-founders of Biblingo.org, a website dedicated to helping people learn and retain Greek and Hebrew. Kevin stopped by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” regarding their project and how their approach differs from other programs or website.  The bottom line is this: they draw from some of the best practices and literature on second language acquisition. Spend just 30 minutes a day and you will find yourself learning Greek or Hebrew and retaining it in ways you had not before.  Even 15 minutes a day will help you down the road.  They encourage students not to memorize words or paradigms but internalize the language.  Their innovative approach is catching on around the world.  The costs to learn Greek or Hebrew with biblingo.com for one year are about ½ the costs of one credit hour at a college or university.  $18 gives you complete access to learn one language for a month.  And if you have already taken Greek or Hebrew, the site will help you keep up with and improve your biblical languages skills.  Want to learn Greek and/or Hebrew and learn it for LIFE: www.biblingo.org                     The post TSC_062 Kevin Grasso, Biblingo.org first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_060 Vincent Bacote, Reckoning with Race

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Vincent Bacote <- Back to Episodes Vincent Bacote, Reckoning with Race Dr. Vince Bacote, Associate Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College, joins David Capes to talk about his new book, Reckoning with Race and Performing the Good News: In Search of a Better Evangelical Theology (Brill, 2020).  Dr. Bacote is interested in rehabilitating the evangelical movement when it comes to how racial minorities fit into its life.  For too long the good news, while central to evangelical theology and life, has not always been good for minorities.  The polarization now in the west is due in large part because majorities and minorities are speaking past each another rather than finding a place at the table for one another.  According to Bacote, theology and ethics belong together and are not separate spheres of life and thought.  After discussing the meaning of “racism” and “critical race theory,” Bacote offers concrete proposals for what serious Christians and a thoughtful church can do next.  To learn more about Dr. Vince Bacote and his work, go to his website www.vincentbacote.com.                 The post TSC_060 Vincent Bacote, Reckoning with Race first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_059 Steve Stewart, The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Steve Stewart <- Back to Episodes Steve Stewart, The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis Steve Stewart—pastor, church leader, and founder of Impact Nations—joined David Capes to talk about God’s work in his life and Impact Nations, an international organization dedicated to the whole gospel which means impacting whole persons, spiritually, economically, educationally and socially.  Out of the Covid pandemic and the racial, political predicaments washing over us, Steve has written a terrific book entitled The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis (Impact Nations Publishing, 2020).  Like many others Steve has found solace, direction and inspiration in that first part of Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount.  Steve talks with David about how one beatitude leads to the next, and how the gospel is not just about who’s going to heaven?  It is about the whole person and what God intends for us here and now.  That is why Steve says the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount deal with Kingdom citizens doing the right thing for the right reason.  The beatitudes are both an invitation to share in God’s life and a paradox.  Be sure to get his book and read it carefully.  If you want to know more about Steve’s work at Impact Nations, you can do so at www.impactnations.com.               The post TSC_059 Steve Stewart, The Beatitudes for a Time of Crisis first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_058 John Peckham, Divine Attributes

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes John Peckham <- Back to Episodes John Peckham, Divine Attributes Dr. John Peckham, professor of theology and Christian philosophy at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, is a fine young scholar, and he has written a new book entitled, Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture (Baker Academic, 2021). He joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his book which is a great contribution to knowing the God whom the church adores and worships.  Thoroughly immersed in Scripture, Peckham’s theology of God tackles tough questions and comes up with sobering and clear answers.  Does God change? Does God have emotions? Does God know everything, including the future? Is God all-powerful? Does everything that happens fit into God’s will? Is God entirely good and loving?  How can God be one and yet three persons?  This is a superb book, and Capes and Peckham had a great conversation.               The post TSC_058 John Peckham, Divine Attributes first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_056 Scott Sager, Jesus in Isolation

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Scott Sager <- Back to Episodes Scott Sager .Scott Sager, Vice President for Church Services and a member of the Bible faculty at Lipscomb University, stopped by to talk about his new book, Jesus in Isolation: Lazarus, Viruses, and Us (Wipf & Stock, 2021) on “The Stone Chapel.”  Although the book project began years before Covid 19 hit, it was the virus itself and subsequent isolation that sharpened Sager’s thinking about the book.  Inspired by G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, and N. T. Wright in various ways, Scott takes us through a sustained meditation on the hinge episode in John’s Gospel, the resurrection of Lazarus.  Punctuated with poetry throughout, Sager makes a cogent case for how the church needs poets in a day when soundbytes, Twitter and social media dominate the headlines.  It is arranged so that people can use it as a study guide for 12 weeks in a small group.               The post TSC_056 Scott Sager, Jesus in Isolation first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC_055 D. Clint Burnett, Interpreting the New Testament through Inscriptions

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Clint Burnett <- Back to Episodes Clint Burnett Clint Burnett (PhD, Boston College) joined David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his new book Interpreting the New Testament through Inscriptions (Hendrickson Academic, 2020).  Dr. Burnett discusses what inscriptions are, what they tell us about the world of the New Testament, and how scholars go about dating them to the period.  There are a lot of places where the New Testament and inscriptions come together and Burnett covers them in his book.  Inscriptions related: to the title “Lord;” ancient banquets; imperial oaths and decrees from Caesar; benefactors/benefactresses and overseers; and—everyone’s favorite—calculating numbers like 666 as the number of a man in Revelation.  There are over half a million inscriptions so far discovered in the ancient world and they tell us about the lives of the average individual.               The post TSC_055 D. TSC_054 Sandra Richter, Stewards of Eden

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Sandra Richter <- Back to Episodes Sandra Richter Sandra (‘Sandy’) Richter (PhD, Harvard) joined David Capes by Zoom to talk about her 2020 book The Stewards of Eden: What Scripture Says about the Environment and Why It Matters (IVP, 2020).  David and Sandy’s paths have crossed a number of times in meetings of Scripture scholars.  Much of what Sandy has thought and written about during her career has to do with creation and the fall (Genesis 1-3).  This book is no different, but it takes Sandy’s concerns about the environment to a new level.  Sandy hopes to awaken the sleeping giant, that is, the passion, energy and focus of evangelical Christians and churches, to understand and act consistently with Scripture and the gospel when it comes to the environment.  She has written what amounts to a biblical theology of environmental stewardship that demands a response.  She wants to move evangelicals past the politics to a courageous moral stance when it comes to God’s earth and everything in it.               The post TSC_054 Sandra Richter, Stewards of Eden first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.
