This theme connects to Jesus’ New Testament teaching about bringing God's peace to Earth as it is in heaven.A key focus in 1 Kings is Solomon's prayer at the temple dedication. This prayer, seen as inspired by the Holy Spirit, is remarkable because Solomon appears to anticipate Israel’s future failures and pleads for God's mercy and compassion in response.John 4 tells the powerful story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman. This week we study the event that occurs between the prophet Nathan and the moment when David feels a great desire to build a house for the Lord. We see that the prophet Nathan says to the King: “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.” But God then reveals to Nathan that, although David desired to build a temple for God, he was not the one who should do it. We see Nathan's obedience in telling him what God had truly spoken about the building of the house of God. And I think there is a principle we must draw from this: are we going to follow our human wisdom or are we going to submit our wisdom to the discernment of the Lord?In Luke 24, the Ascension of Jesus into heaven is recounted. It is in the Ascension that we find the true beginning of the New Covenant. This week's reading is from the book of Samuel, where we see the story of David, Nabal, and Abigail. In this story, we can see that, like Abigail, we can choose to do what is right and trust in the Lord.The next story is that of David who saves King Saul. Here we can learn that there are things God has promised us, such as a vision or a wish. However, we must be very careful not to be carried away by human effort, power, and ambition to try to manipulate and get what we want.In 1 Samuel 28, we see that Saul is desperate because he stopped listening to the Lord and tries to contact Samuel. We see that the witch Endor was a legitimate witch who could actually deal with spiritual entities. This week we focus on 1 Samuel chapter 2, where we find an incredible prayer uttered by Hannah. There are a couple of aspects of this prayer that I love, and they show how the Old Testament conveys the nature of the kingdom of God that Jesus will expound in the New Testament. We also look at the story of the Ark of the Covenant and how it was captured by the Philistines. Finally, we examine the New Testament in the Book of Luke with the story where the Pharisees get upset with Jesus for healing someone on the Sabbath. As we try to understand what happens in the book of Judges, I think it's very important that we remember what happens to Joshua during his period of transition. Whenever there are transitions, there is a greater moment of vulnerability, and it is very easy to waver in faith. The people of Israel experienced all of this. This week, Dr. Joel mentions the narrative of the story of Joshua. What happens in this story is like a great adventure in which God guides Joshua with the purpose of reclaiming the land of Canaan. God sends them on a military responsibility. The Book of Joshua gives the sense that God calls his people to full obedience. But there is a danger lurking in these lands, who are the gods of the nations. Entering the book of Joshua we also see that the book of Jasher is mentioned, but what is the book of Jasher?
