Quantum Tech Pod Episode 64: Kurt Stokbro, CEO, Sparrow Quantum

My latest Quantum Tech Pod episode with Kurt Stokbro, CEO of quantum company Sparrow Quantum is live!  Sparrow Quantum is a quantum photonics company based in Copenhagen, founded in 2016 by Professor Peter Lodahl. It is widely recognized as a leader in single photon sources, achieving the world's highest light matter coupling efficiency. Kurt is the CEO and is also a major investor in Sparrow Quantum.  Kurt grew up in a small town in Denmark and studied quantum mechanics at the Niels Bohr Institute, attending advanced quantum mechanics lectures given by Aage Bohr, one of Niels Bohr’s sons! Sparrow Quantum’s flagship product is a deterministic single photon source, a superior alternative to probabilistic quantum emitters. When the photon is excited in the quantum dots, it only has one path to follow. Every time you trigger it, it will emit one photon, resulting in billions of indistinguishable photons per second. To do the same with probabilistic approaches would require millions of emitters. Sparrow Quantum is a component provider and works with various partners. They recently initiated strategic relationships with photonic computing companies to include Sparrow Quantum’s solution in their system. Check out my conversation with Kurt! Quantum Tech Pod Episode 63: Grégoire Ribordy, CEO, ID Quantique (IDQ)

My latest Quantum Tech Pod with GrĂ©goire Ribordy, CEO of ID Quantique (IDQ)is live!  Gregoire went to EPFL (Écolepolytechnique fĂ©dĂ©rale de Lausanne) - the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - where he studied physics. After working for a year in Japan at Nikon, the camera company, he returned to Switzerland in the mid-90s.  Interesting back story: Just before 2000, one of the very first quantum companies called Magic Technologies, founded in Boston, was going around the world trying to license QKD for quantum cryptography.  They came to Geneva and offered to partner with GrĂ©goire and his team. But he said to his colleagues, “Why don’t we just do it on our own? Why would we do it with a company far away when we could do it here and control our own destiny?” So they founded ID Quantique (IDQ) in 2001. The first application, which surprised him, was online gambling. In the early 2000s, many casino games like poker were moving online and they needed a source of entropy. It was a market that IDQ found by chance. Today, IDQ prepares organizations for a quantum-safe future by providing quantum key distribution, Quantum-Safe Key management solutions, quantum random number generators, and single photon counters.  IDQ recently signed an agreement with Singtel to develop Singapore’s first Nationwide Quantum-Safe Network Plus (NQSN+) for enterprises. Check out my conversation with GrĂ©goire! Quantum Tech Pod Episode 60: QKD solutions with LuxQuanta CEO Vanesa Diaz

Christopher Bishop’s latest Quantum Tech Pod with Vanesa Diaz, CEO of quantum computing company LuxQuanta is live! Vanesa grew up in a small village in the north of Spain and because she was good at math, she eventually got a degree in engineering. Her early career found her in tech roles, but she wanted to spend less time in the lab and more time with customers and developing business strategies. So, she moved to Australia and got a Master’s degree in marketing and business! When she returned to Europe, she landed a job at Corning, where she worked for over a decade. She has also worked at RYMSA and Vodaphone. Her company LuxQuanta was formed in May 2021 as a spin-off from The Institute of Photonic Sciences where it was incubated for over four years. LuxQuanta delivers Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems that can be integrated into existing network infrastructures to provide a quantum-safe layer of security on top of mathematical cryptographic techniques. Her advice to women interested in working in quantum: “The tech industry is still very male-dominated, and it is normal to fear that you might not be able to do something new or challenging. Surround yourself with the right support – from mentors to supervisors. And don’t be afraid to fight for it!” Check out Chris’s conversation with Vanesa at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or at this link!

Quantum Tech Pod Episode 59: Théau Peronnin, CEO and Co-Founder, Alice & Bob

Christopher Bishop’s latest Quantum Tech Pod with ThĂ©au Peronnin, CEO and Co-Founder of Alice & Bob, is live!   As a student, ThĂ©au was into both physics and electronics. An innovator to the core, he competed in the International Young Physicist tournament but soon realized he was 50 years too late to develop new groundbreaking low level electronics. Quantum computers provided the perfect setting for him to apply his passion for physics with his desire to innovate.   His collaborative work with RaphaĂ«l Lescanne (CTO and Co-Founder) on a bit-flip-protected qubit design that could dramatically improve quantum error correction led them to start Alice & Bob in 2020.   The two error types that affect a quantum bit are bit flips - that switch a zero into a one and vice versa – a somewhat classical error – and phase flips - a purely quantum error that switches the phase of a superposition from zero plus one into zero minus one.   Alice & Bob’s cat qubits exponentially suppress the first type of error - bit flips - by design, thereby providing a new level of error correction! Thanks to this feature, a cat qubit-based quantum computer would run Shors’ algorithm with 60 times fewer qubits than the state-of-the-art, the company demonstrated earlier this year.   Check out Chris’s conversation with ThĂ©au!
