W3LL People with Co-Founder Shirley Pinkson
While the highly competitive plant-based beauty space is now more mainstream, there wasn’t a lot of competition in 2008 when Shirley Pinkson and her co-founders at W3LL People (now owned by E.L.F. Beauty) started their performance-driven, plant-based, clean beauty brand. We had the opportunity to sit down with Shirley post-acquisition to talk about the brand’s developments (and her next steps at E.L.F. Beauty). The company was a collaboration of three best friends who went to school together and started the brand from scratch.. Shirley combined her decades of experience in makeup and retail together with her co-founders who brought expertise in branding and science. While they originally thought they would build the brand in prestige retail spaces with the likes of Fred Segal (their first account), it didn’t take long before they were approached by Target and have now pivoted towards greater accessibility and awareness. In this episode Shirley also discusses:The hard work of marketing in the those early days which included flyers on cars, stickers, and buttons, and standing outside on the sidewalk in front of their Austin studioThe massive growth of the clean beauty spaceWhy they took five years to launch a mascaraYou’ll also find out about the “very fast love affair” between W3LL People and E.L.F. Beauty.. To learn more about the brand you can visit their website. Knickey with Co-Founder & CEO Cayla O’Connell Davis
When Cayla O’Connell Davis, co-founder and CEO of Knickey, was in graduate school she stumbled across some truths that led her to strive to make a positive contribution to the fashion industry. She had spent years on the retail side of the business, in merchandising, design, styling, and sales. After graduation, she worked with a company that brought eco-friendly home goods to big retailers. While with this employer she was exposed to the organic cotton industry. The seeds from this exposure grew a couple of years later into a startup that she built with a friend around that industry: organic cotton underwear. Most people are very familiar with cotton, and yet they don't understand the monumental difference between organic cotton and what Cayla calls “chemical cotton.” The latter can contains pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, chloride, formaldehyde, and other carcinogens, and theses chemicals remain on your garments, no matter how many times you wash them.Knickey is also known for its underwear recycling program. This amazing program provides a free shipping label to send used and unwanted underwear to Knickey’s recycling facility, where the underwear is shredded and made into shoddy, which can then be made into insulation, furniture, and padding. You even get credit for a free pair of underwear on your next purchase! In this episode Cayla also discusses:Her passion for sustainability, resulting in a fully organic and Fair Trade certified supply chainThe use of body positivity and diversity in their modelsHow a Vogue story on Knickey led to them selling out of a six-month supply of product in six weeksThe handwritten notes customers send to say thank you for the product If you’d like to shop their line, do so on their website (where you can also find the link to recycle any of your old underwear). This episode is brought to you by Wavebreak. 8-figure ecommerce stores hire Wavebreak to turn email marketing into a top revenue driver. Most ecommerce brands don’t email right... and it costs them. HauteCarat with President Abdul Mazin
On this episode of the Glam & Grow podcast, we spoke with Abdul Mazin, Founder and President of HauteCarat.HauteCarat designs beautiful lab-grown diamond jewelry. Despite the fact that lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically indistinguishable from their mined counterparts, there’s still a bias against them among buyers and sellers in the diamond industry. One of the lessons Abdul shares in the episode is the perceived knowledge about the cheaper prices of lab-grown diamonds: that only “budget shoppers” would be interested in them. Yet HauteCarat’s experience has been the opposite. Their customers have large budgets to spend but are more focused on value and ethics.Abdul gives insight into:Why the “old school” players in the diamond industry weren’t selling lab-grown diamondsHow HauteCarat got a chance with Nordstrom How a diamond is “grown”How lab diamonds are better for people and the environment Abdul also shares the evolution of HauteCarat’s wildly popular “try at home” rings, and what pivot they made early on to better qualify those customers. This episode is brought to you by Wavebreak. 8-figure ecommerce stores hire Wavebreak to turn email marketing into a top revenue driver.
