You Are a Social Creation (with Dr. Brian Lowery)

You can expand yourself and your sense of the world in ways that will be surprising to you, stay curious, and take the time to understand the depth of those around you.    Walter Kenneth Kilpatrick Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford University Dr. Brian Lowery (@Dr. Brian Lowery) is a social psychologist whose new book, Selfless: The Social Creation of You, presents a provocative, powerful theory of identity, arguing that there is no essential "self"—our selves are social creations of those with whom we interact. He is passionate about the global discussion of equity and how each individual perceives life through the lens of having advantages vs. disadvantages. His work is one of inquiry where he asks you, the student, skeptic, or reader, to come to your own conclusions after entertaining his research, ideas, and assertions.  Advocate, social psychologist, and author Dr. Brian Lowery(@ Dr. Brian Lowery) is Walter Kenneth Kilpatrick Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford University. He has been an important voice in discussing white privilege and investigating social, institutional, and personal bias from learned or lived experience. His new book, Selfless: The Social Creation of You, is based on empirical science that reads with unintentional notes of Buddhism.  “The self is kind of like a time machine. You can think about the past through the self of who are you right now!” - Dr. Brian Lowery   Key Takeaways: Engaging with People: We are the center of our own world and our life regarding our experiences. Your experiences are deep, interesting, and broad. All people on this planet's experiences are deep, interesting, and broad. Engaging with people with this mindset will enrich your life. Consider Who You Are: The Self is flexible, fluid, and changing over time. Consider what that means. How does the Self change? Also, how do you want the Self to change? What kind of situations will produce the type of change you'd like to have? Notice how your relationships impact the direction you are evolving because relationships are a fundamental part of being human. To be human is to be in relation with other human beings and your environment.    Responsibility as a Leader:  As a leader (and we are all leading whether we are aware of this agency or not), what you do or don’t do impacts everyone around you. Being a leader is not something to ignore. All of us are affecting those around us. When you engage with people in various situations, as a leader, pay attention to your and their desires. This attention will help you be responsible for those people and the outcomes you are co-creating together.  Small Interactions are Meaningful: The brief conversation you have in line at the grocery store can and does have meaning. You can expand yourself and your sense of the world in ways that will be surprising to you if you take the small interactions you have day to day more seriously. When you talk with people, ask them real questions, and listen to what they say. You don't have to agree with it, and you don't have to like them even. But if you listen, you will find something there for you in that brief moment or their answer. The Sameness in Everybody: You get to know and develop more self-awareness through meditation. When you go deep within yourself, you understand that there is a sameness and synchronicity with everyone you meet. That's the essence of spiritual practices to touch into what makes us alive and creates us.  Promotions: Kion You can now save 20% on monthly deliveries and 10% on one-time purchases. Take Agency of Your Attention Span (with Dr. Gloria Mark)

It's really important to become aware of your own attentional capacity and understand when your tank is starting to get low. Our attention has become a commodity and is getting hijacked by technology. Dr. Gloria Mark (@Dr.GloriaMark) is the author of a groundbreaking book called Attention Span. Attention Span is a must-read as it covers Dr. Mark's decades of research into how our minds have been affected in the digital age. Gloria received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in psychology. She studies the impact of digital media on people's lives. Her work is a deep dive into examining multitasking, interruptions, mood, and productivity due to digital devices becoming so intricate in our lives. She has published over 200 articles and has presented her work at multiple venues.   Author and Creative Dr. Gloria Mark(@Dr.GloriaMark) is a Chancellor's professor of Informatics at the University of California Irvine. She has published and presented her work in venues such as the Aspen Ideas Festival, and it's appeared in popular media such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NPR, BBC, Atlantic, and more. Her new book, Attention Span is a must-read as it covers Dr. Mark’s decades of research into how our minds have been affected in the digital age.  “We have a limited set of attentional resources, or it's been called mental resources or cognitive resources. And you can think of it as your attentional capacity. And it's limited, these resources are limited, and they're very precious.” - Dr. Gloria Mark   Key Takeaways:   3 Types of Attention: Intentional attention is when you use your mental focus to do an activity such as writing, lifting weights, or scuba diving. Exogenous attention, or the default mode network, is when we respond to things outside of us. Kinetic attention is shifting from an iPhone to a computer or from one screen to another. Recent studies show that most people average 40 seconds per screen.   Technology as and Extension of Self: Devices like cellular phones and computers have become an extension of ourselves. Our lives have become intimately intertwined with their devices in this modern age. However, where is the line, and how can we draw it? Learning to be sovereign from our devices and drawing a healthy line for our identity is important.   Switch Cost: Every time you switch your attention, you incur an extra cost in time. Imagine you have an internal whiteboard in your mind and are writing everything you need for a specific task; if you switch in the middle of that list, you are erasing the board for the new task you have changed to. Therefore, when you return to the first task, it takes longer to reorient yourself. Multitasking or switching focus takes time and creates exhaustion and a lack of clarity.   Saying No in Service to Your Yes: Monotasking, a good night's sleep, and taking breaks throughout your day allows you to have balanced energy levels and replenish them if needed. Knowing how to say no in service to your bigger yes will allow you to be clear on what tasks/commitments are important and which ones you need to let go of or delegate to others. Play and Presence (with Angelo Keely)

There is value in having fun and evolving oneself while being dedicated to a vision through hard work and play. Curiosity and drive are two of the key tools in successful entrepreneurship. Angelo Keely(@AngeloKeely) is passionate about both of these tools. His background in religious studies, both western and eastern, help frame his mindset whenever he begins a new endeavor. Angelo is the Co-Founder and CEO of Kion, a nutritional supplement company that is focused on bringing the best product to the public.    Co-Founder and CEO of Kion Angelo Keely (@AngeloKeely), created the company motivated by the mission to support athletes. Kion brings the highest grade ingredients in delicious and simple supplementation for muscle health and development. Angelo is passionate about staying in motion and living a fulfilling life. His belief is that success means loving and healthy relationships with himself, family, and peers. “ There's no free lunch. Same thing with business, there's no way to just like make tons of money in the super easy way. Maybe like out of luck. Same thing with health. There's no magic secret to health.” - Angelo Keely   Key Takeaways:   Embodiment: As our world becomes more and more mechanistic and digital it is important to stay embodied. Embodiment is a daily practice of using our physical body through exercise and presence. Developing somatic awareness is multilayered and essential to live an embodied life.     Meditation, Health, and Nature: Meditation is not a goal oriented practice. It is a practice of learning how to be with oneself regardless of the circumstances of the mind. Meditation in nature is a fulfilling combination to regenerate and create more harmony and balance throughout the body. If your physical body is not healthy enough that may limit spiritual or mental or other types of development. Being in nature, your breath, and your thoughts, will eventually  get you to a point where you develop an honest relationship with yourself.    Amino Acids: There are nine essential amino acids that help the body build healthy muscle. The supplementation of amino acids is a proficient way of giving your body what it needs as a fuel to build strong and healthy muscle mass. Amino acids create all of the new muscle protein synthesis. Once you consume essential amino acids, either as a supplement or as a whole food protein, your body enters a process of muscle protein synthesis that lasts about three hours.   Personal Commitments: One of the themes that is pervading the wellness industry is commitment. The question to ask oneself is who are you committed to being? What are your core values, ethics, and beliefs? Living in integrity through those commitments means that they are at the forefront of all your words and actions Kion You can now save 20% on monthly deliveries and 10% on one-time purchases. Preventative Training for Mental Health (with Mark Bouchard)

We train police and military how to overcome the challenges of being physically safe. It's time to show them tools of how to overcome the psychological impact and challenges from being in the field as an active duty officer. Police and Military personal have a higher rate of suicide than the civilian population. Mark Bouchard (@MarkBouchard) is currently with Canada's national police force, the RCMP. He was a SWAT operator and a medic who has developed a passion for mental health after suffering his own psychological injury back in 2015. Mark has taught dozens of mental health training sessions and spent seven years as a peer support member. His new book, Setting My Sights On Stigma: Thoughts From an Injured Mind, is an offering of information on how to navigate and heal from the psychological injuries from being on the front line.    Mark Bouchard (@MarkBouchard) is creating a course on police culture and lethal force decisions for The First Responder Behavioral Health Institute. His new book, Setting My Sights On Stigma: Thoughts From an Injured Mind, is an offering of information on how to navigate and heal from the psychological injuries of being on the front line. Mark is a father, mental health advocate, and active duty police officer in the Canadian national force. “The reality is, everyone is different in their versions of the impact of trauma, whether it's PTSD, depression, anxiety, they'll be impacted in different ways, and different treatments can help them.”  - Mark Bouchard Key Takeaways:   Destigmatizing PTSD: PTSD is a diagnosis that can trap many in feeling helpless, less than, and out of control. Leaders in the military and police services are fighting to destigmatize the negative connotations of this diagnosis so that people do not feel afraid to come forward and get the help they need.    The New Way: Drinking too much alcohol and eating to deal with stress has been acceptable coping mechanisms in many professional communities. It is becoming common knowledge that these behaviors only add more stress on the mental, physical and emotional bodies. The new way is a path of healing and health and it works; get good sleep, eat well, journal thoughts and feelings, and get support.    Psychological Preventative Training: Suicide is becoming more common for active duty police and military. It is becoming obvious and urgent that police and military programs implement preventative psychological training for new recruits. Preventative training can help educate personnel in the forces on PTSD, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation so they know what is happening if it comes up and how to get help.   People Who Love to Serve: When you ask new recruits going into the military or police fields why they want to join the force. The #1 answer is, “to help people”. Most people go into the field of policing or military because they truly want to be of service to the community, state, and country.  Caldera Lab Get 20% OFF with our code DIVINE at https://calderalab.com/divine . Make it Hard (with John U Bacon)

Don’t be afraid to give control as a leader. The most successful teams work hard, have compassion, and understand how to transfer leadership between teammates. Renowned sport’s journalist John U Bacon (@JohnUBacon) has a passion for leadership and teams. He won the Award of the Night Wallace Fellowship for journalism from the University of Michigan. And most interesting, he took the worst high school hockey team as a coach from the worst to one of the best in the country in four years. He is the author of 11 books, seven of which are national bestsellers. His most recent book is a New York Times Best Seller; Let Them Lead: Unexpected Lessons in Leadership From America’s Worst High School Hockey Team, shares insights on leadership and the power of making things hard.  John U. Bacon (@John U Bacon) career as a leader and teacher spans three decades. He has won awards for being an inspiring writer, a public speaker, and a college instructor. Bacon has taught at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, and teaches at the University of Michigan. Although he is a mediocre hockey player his excitement and knowledge of sports has made national history. “ You are very impatient with behaviors and very patient with results. If your attitude is good, and you're doing all things I'm telling you to do and our processes are correct. If you follow those, you will get there and worry less about the results and more about the process. ”  - John U. Bacon Key Takeaways:   High Bar: Keeping a high bar allows people to rise to the challenge. People prove over and over again that when things are hard and challenging it inspires them to want to do better and become more comfortable with failure. When the bar is held high it teaches people they are more capable and can exceed their own expectations.   Team Leadership: Strong and successful teams let go of the hierarchical models. The ones in “control” or “command” know when to defer to those in lower ranks when the mission calls for it. Strong leadership is understanding that everyone can lead and needs to lead within their strengths as it is called for.   Effort is Important: Technique and skills can be taught. If you want to learn how to be more aggressive and successful in business and fall on the shy or introverted spectrum, let go of fear of failure. All good leaders understand that the quality of hard work and effort is more important than someone knowing how to do something correctly.    Mentorship Over Money: Having strong mentorship, especially when you are young is more important than making money. The money will come eventually if you have the right attitude, develop your skills, and stay humble. AI’s Place in Therapy and Coaching (with Dr. Gabriella Rosen Kellerman)

AI could possibly be one of the best tools for the mental health field. The merging of technology and therapy is exciting and getting proven results.. AI is no longer some strange science fiction concept, it is becoming a part of human existence. Dr. Gabriella Kellerman (@gabriellarosenkellerman) has dedicated her life to discovering the most impactful ways to empower and transform the condition of mental illness. Her passion for the science of thriving has led her to become the Chief Innovation Officer and Chief Product Officer at BetterUp Labs. Her new book Tomorrow Mind is all about thriving and training our minds to investigate and learn how we can improve our thought process, attitudes, and actions.    Many advances have been made thanks to the technology advancements of AI. Utilizing this new era Dr. Gabriella Kellerman has dedicated her work in discovering research based inclusive methods that will support people in thriving in today's world. Inspired by her father’s dedication to helping humanity with sustainable energy resources, Dr. Kellerman from a young age decided she wanted to also dedicate her life to a purpose that would serve humanity. “ We are trying to help people shift into a more proactive mindset, where it's not about any one challenge. It's about all of the challenges to come preparing to meet them with greater resilience, greater foresight, greater reserves of motivation. ”  - Dr. Gabriella Rosen Kellerman Key Takeaways:   PRISM: This acronym stands for Honing Prospection: the ability to think about the future (P), Resilience (R), Finding, Innovation, establishing Social supports (S), and  meaning (M).    Key Difference of a Coach vs. Therapist: Therapists can treat clinical conditions, get reimbursement from insurance, etc. Therapists do also see high functioning people for non clinical purposes without insurance reimbursement which can look a lot like coaching. Coaches do not do clinical work, they do not treat clinical conditions. They are wonderful resources for building personal and professional development skills.    Toxic Positivity: Toxic positivity is sort of a shallow positivity, where people know that underlying it is not that depth of authentic, positive feeling. Chasing happiness as a goal or the ultimate state can be toxic because it can trap us in denying the value of the rainbow of emotional states. Living a positive life includes relationships, deep engagement with your work, a sense of achievement, a sense of meaning and purpose, these don't always come with positive emotions as relationships can be difficult. Optimistic Thinking: Our brains tend to lean toward pessimistic thoughts. Being aware of when we go into fear or reaction and looking at what thoughts come up is important. Catching negative thoughts regarding outcomes and countering them with possible positive results can help us stay in balance and be less reactive. The New Frontier of Mental Health (with Dr. Chris Palmer)

Mental disorders are now the leading cause of disability on the planet and in the United States.  We have a crisis and we need new ideas and new approaches. Mental health has become a global crisis. Harvard psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Chris Palmer (@ChrisPalmerMD) is the Director of the Department of postgraduate and continuing education in McLean Hospital, and he's an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  His research is leading the future of understanding, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. His recent book Brain Energy outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain.   Dr. Chris Palmer was personally impacted witnessing the decline of his mother’s mental health when he was a child. His frustration with the medical system and his own struggles drove him into the field of psychology where he has focused on understanding what mental disorders are and how they can be treated in a new and more effective way. Dr. Palmer has made a link of metabolic health and treatment that is changing the way Western medicine views and approaches our mental health crisis.  “ I am putting people with mental disorders (bipolar, schizophrenia, depression) into full remission, sometimes off of psychiatric medications, using strategies like the ketogenic diet, but also exercise, good sleep, get off the drugs and alcohol, and stress reduction.”  - Dr. Chris Palmer Key Takeaways:   Mitochondria and Brain Health: Genes get turned off or on primarily in relation to mitochondria. There has been an explosion of research on the tiny things in our cells and the benefits of addressing them for brain health. Mitochondria are the primary regulators of the metabolism, and brain disorders are being linked to metabolic disorders. Scientists are beginning to understand the role of the metabolism and mitochondria, and the role they play in mental health.    Individuals Brain Strength: Just like how each of us have certain muscles that are stronger than others, our brains are similar. Each of us have areas of the brain that are stronger or weaker. Once you locate the weak areas of the brain you can often retrain them and see amazing results in cognition and emotional functioning.   Ketogenic Diet, Lifestyle, and Brain Function: The ketogenic diet has amazingly profound impacts on the human brain. The ketogenic diet promotes metabolic health which positively affects the brain. The application of the Ketogenic diet paired with proper sleep, stress reduction, finding purpose, and exercise is a prescription that is working. However it isn’t a quick fix, it takes years of dedication and focus to see full remission in patients.   Medication is Limited: Although medication can be effective in treating the symptoms of a mental disorder there are limitations and many side effects. Dr. Palmer has dedicated his life’s work to finding better ways than the mainstream focus on medicating patients. He believes that although medication is necessary at times it is not the only route for treatment, and can be very limiting for overall recovery of mental health and brain disorders. Food is Medicine (with Dr. Will Cole)

I would say focus on whole foods. Focus on nutrient density, and  have it be bioavailable nutrient dense food. Meaning foods that are high in nutrients, that's first and foremost when it comes to being healthy. .   Gut imbalance and shame are like hand in glove when it comes to being healthy according to Dr. Will Cole (@Dr. Will Cole). As a visionary in the health field he created one of the first functional medicine telehealth centers in the world. He is the author of Ketotarian, Intuitive Fasting, and Gut Feelings. He is one of the top 50 functional and integrative doctors in the nation and specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of chronic disease.   Dr. Will Cole spent his earnings as a teenager on the latest superfood or herb that he was learning about. His passion and curiosity led him into the field of functional medicine where he is dedicated to demystifying how to get and stay healthy. Dr. Cole has a podcast, The Art of Being Well, where he explores a variety of diverse topics. His latest passion is finding the intimate relationship between our emotions and our gut health and how they affect one another.   “I think if you're getting enough from food, you don't really need many supplements, it’s that simple.”  - Dr. Will Cole Ketogenic Diet: Eating Keto can be very beneficial, but it isn’t for everyone. When you are eating ketogenically you want your diet to consume 65-75%fat. And this is good fats. The false belief that you can eat anything you want as long as you are in the correct percentage range of fat intake is incorrect and dangerous for your health.    Shame and Gut Health: It is becoming more and more clear that our emotional and mental states are directly affected by our gut health. And just like the saying what came first, the chicken or the egg, our emotional and mental states affect our gut health. Our bodies and beingness are interwoven and deeply connected. Living with shame is a leading cause for gut imbalance.   Organization and Intuitive Nutrition: If you can be organized and take time to test which foods, diet, and supplements work best to keep your body in harmony then you can start to let go of structures regarding diet and eat intuitively.   Western vs. Functional Medicine: One of the main differences between Western and Functional medicine is the way the doctors use your labs. Functional medicine focuses on you being compared to and living in optimal health.    Caldera + Lab! - As you age, you might notice more Fine Lines, Wrinkles and signs of Aging. The Power of Ultra Habits (with RJ Singh)

Meditation, contemplation, all the spiritual practices, even therapy is all asking you to look within. You're not looking out there to solve your problem, you're looking within.   RJ Singh is all about Ultra Habits and the power of implementing positivity into your daily routine. His early life was one of violence, crime, jails, and addiction. With the support of mentors and supportive frameworks Singh embarked on the path of overcoming the pull of living in the shadows. Through his experiences he developed a system which empowers individuals to embark on the journey of living in awareness of mind, body, and spirit.    RJ Singh believes in limitless possibilities. He is a corporate and ultra-endurance athlete, family man and is dedicated to the pursuit of self-mastery. His life mission is to lead by example and share what he has learned about the power of habit and choice.    “As a person stays sober longer, and they're doing the work. They move into a place where they've read all the books, they've accumulated all the information, and you kind of realize that all that information is saying the same thing. Ultimately, within our heart and soul and being, we know the answers.” - RJ Singh   Key Takeaways:   Sitting with Yourself: Being able to sit alone in a room and do nothing except be present to yourself in the moment is challenging for many. Learning to be with your thoughts, feelings, and the space inbetween is foundational to being present with life and others. The Levels of the Mind: There are layers to the mind's activity and stories. Observation, engagement, identification, and witnessing. When all the thoughts settle and you have become a witness to how your mind functions a deep understanding is discovered. Recovery: Addictions that undermine our health, relationships, and professional goals are like mold inside a wall. Unless you eradicate the root cause, identify the triggers, and build a solid community of support it is challenging to overcome the behaviors. Creating positive habits to replace the negative addictions is an important step to recovery. Honesty: We all lie to ourselves at some point when we are living in an addiction. Getting clear about the insidious nature of deceit and how it undermines recovery is essential. And being truthful with our words and actions toward the self and others is necessary.   Go to https://hvmn.com/ and use the promo code: ‘Divine’ to 20% off your next purchase of Keytone IQ Links: Ultra Habits Website Ultra Habits Podcast LinkedIn

Mystery and Revolution in Science (with Mark Fox)

Many things can be explained to the smallest detail. There are the things like Aspirin that we know work, however still cannot explain exactly why it works. This is the power of trusting the seen and the unseen in science and medicine.   Mark Fox (@markfox) is an engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, and author. From rocket building to PEMF therapy Mark uses his skills and curiosity to invent solutions for the seemingly unsolvable. Utilizing TRIZ in his work, Mark is on the cutting edge of groundbreaking inventions that could change the future of our health and home.   Inventor and visionary Mark Fox shares how to access your creativity and curiosity in his book DaVinci and the 40 Answers. He has been researching and evolving a device that helps heal the body through the pulse electromagnetic field for the past 17 years. His company Resona Health has statistically helped Veterans reduce PTSD symptoms.   “ PEMF stands for pulsed electro-magnetic field. So it's what it sounds like: it's an electromagnetic field that pulses. Now, the earth, the earth is a 24/7, since the beginning of time, as far as we know, is a PMF machine”  - Mark Fox   Key Takeaways: TRIZ: The theory of inventive problem solving: A Russian acronym that is based in the 40 categories inventions fall into. A lens that helps you look at problem solving creatively to find new and fresh perspectives. Examples: What is the inverse of the situation? Mechanical vibration, what happens when you shake it? Looking at the problem from another dimension.  Grounding: The earth has an electromagnetic field that is pulsing 24/7. It has been scientifically proven that it is good for one’s health to walk barefoot on the natural ground, connected to earth’s frequency. This practice of what is now called “earthing” is a key grounding principle in many eastern traditions such as yoga and martial arts. FDA Funding: 75% of FDA funding is by Big-Pharma.
