EP133 - Penile Implant Surgery
Welcome to episode 133 of the Sexology Podcast! Today I’m delighted to welcome Jeffrey Loh-Doyle, MD to the podcast. In this episode he speaks to me about the ways in which neurologists can help men with erectile dysfunction, the steps leading to a penile prosthesis and how the penile prosthesis works. Jeffrey Loh-Doyle, MD, is a specialist in complex surgical reconstruction of the male urinary tract, male urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, sexual health, urethral stricture disease, and Peyronie’s Disease. He joins the USC Institute of Urology after completing his urology residency at USC and further fellowship training in male genitourinary reconstructive and prosthetic surgery under Dr. Stuart Boyd, a world-renown reconstructive cancer surgeon and authority on reconstruction of the lower urinary tract and urologic prosthestics. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Loh-Doyle completed his undergraduate and medical school education in the prestigious Baccalaureate/MD program at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, where he achieved degrees in biological sciences, international relations, and doctor of medicine. Dr. Loh-Doyle’s areas of clinical and research interest include erectile dysfunction, male urinary incontinence, Peyronie’s Disease, reconstruction of the urinary tract, and urologic oncology. In addition to urology, he also has a keen interest in health policy and quality improvement and participated in a two-year health care administration scholars program run by the Los Angeles County Department of Health. He was awarded a grant to improve the peri-operative patient experience at Los Angeles County+USC, and he is an active participant in several committees aimed at improving the delivery of sophisticated healthcare to the underserved. In this episode she speaks to me about female sexual interest arousal disorder (FSIAD), the impact of FSIAD on partners and understanding self-expansion and how it can help. Dr. Natalie Rosen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her research interests focus on understanding how individuals, and especially couples, cope with sexual problems or changes to their sexual relationship, including low sexual desire. She is an Associate Editor of the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior and has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on sexual relationships. Dr. Rosen’s research is currently funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Foundation of Innovation. EP131 - Does Sexual Orientation Change Across The Life Span?
Welcome to episode 131 of the Sexology Podcast! Today I’m excited to welcome Jes L. Matsick, Ph.D and Anna C. Salomaa, M.S. to the podcast. In this episode they speak to me about defining sexual orientation, addressing the challenges around minority distress and the best practice for identifying sexual identity for clinicians. Jes Matsick, Ph.D. Jes L. Matsick, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at The Pennsylvania State University. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. In her research, she studies sexuality, gender, and prejudice, and much of her work is centered on the perspectives and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals. Dr. Matsick is the director of the Underrepresented Perspectives Lab at Penn State, where she trains undergraduate and graduate students to conduct psychological research with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ issues. Her lab uses social psychological and feminist theories and methodologies to examine contemporary social issues, such as heterosexism, bisexual prejudice, allyship, health disparities, and intergroup relations. Since 2010, she has published more than 25 scientific papers and book chapters in which she examines sexual diversity and the psychological experiences of adults with sexually stigmatized identities. In the classroom at Penn State, she teaches courses that draw on her expertise in sexuality, gender, and health (e.g., Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, Women’s Health Issues, Human Sexuality, and Psychology of Gender). Dr. Matsick’s research has been funded by the American Institute of Bisexuality, the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. Anna C. Salomaa, M.S. Anna C. Salomaa, M.S. is in her final year as a doctoral candidate at The Pennsylvania State University in the Department of Psychology; her area of focus is clinical psychology. The overarching goal of her research is to translate mapping the complexities of sexuality to the improvement of sexual minority health. Her primary areas of expertise include (1) issues in measuring sexual orientation in clinical and research settings and (2) mechanisms behind and interventions against bisexual prejudice in lesbian, gay, and heterosexual individuals that contribute to health disparities in bisexual people. In 2019, she received the Pennsylvania Psychological Foundation’s Student Multicultural Award. Anna is also the recipient of the 2018 Bisexual Issues Committee Foundation Award by APA's Division 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity). Anna integrates her research focus into her clinical work with sexual and gender minority clients by facilitating nuanced identity development. Dr Melvin L. Phillips, Jr. is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. He is a speaker and has lectured on topics including preventative services, anxiety and stress management, caregiving stress, depression in the elderly, mindfulness and cognitive strategies for chronic pain, revalidating sexuality for couples with chronic pain and illness, ethical decision making, and the assessment of mental disorders. He has published in the Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work, conducting a research study on LGBTQ-Affirmative Teaching at Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Understanding Program Directors Views. He holds a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Behavioral Health from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. In addition, Dr Phillips holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Norfolk State University and is an adjunct professor in the Master of Social Work Program with the School of Social Work at Western New Mexico University.
