EP169 - Sexuality and Autism Spectrum Disorder with Dr. Eileen Crehan

Welcome to episode 169 of the Sexology Podcast! Today it’s my pleasure to welcome Dr. Eileen Crehan to the podcast. In this episode Dr. Crehan speaks to me about sexuality and autism, how an autism diagnosis might get in the way of sexual desire, the importance of being pro-active about what you want sexually and recommendations for individuals with ADS who would like to have fulfilling sex lives.     Dr. Crehan is a clinical psychologist and specialist in autism spectrum disorder. In particular, she focuses on adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder and promoting healthy development in the domains of sexuality, physical health, and social abilities. As a queer woman of color, she’s been fighting to bring more humanity to the tech industry, and her mission is to create the world’s most trusted sexual wellness brand to help people increase their sexual health, power, and confidence. Previously, Andrea co-founded the leading financial solution for growing startups, inDinero.com, which now employs 150+ employees globally. She also served as a venture partner at 500 Startups, a global venture capital fund, where she worked with hundreds of startup companies.      Andrea was raised in a religious, conservative Filipino family that only taught abstinence and she only had fear-based sex education in public schools. Seeking support and information, Barrica could not find reliable resources and experienced harassment online. EP167 - How to Talk to Your Kids About Porn with Elizabeth Schroeder, EdD, MSW

Welcome to episode 167 of the Sexology Podcast! Today it’s my pleasure to welcome Elizabeth Schroeder, EdD, MSW to the podcast. In this episode Elizabeth speaks with me about sex education, the importance of good communication with your children about sex and ways in which parents can learn more to help their children.      Elizabeth Schroeder, EdD, MSW (she/her/hers), is an award-winning educator, trainer, program consultant and author specializing in sexuality education pedagogy and programming, LGBTQ+-affirming best practices, and working with adolescent cisgender boys.  She has provided consultation to and direct education and training for schools, parent groups and youth-serving organizations in countries around the world for over 25 years.  Most recently, Dr. Schroeder was the lead author on Rights, Respect, Responsibility, the first-ever K-12 sexuality education curriculum that is completely mapped to the National Sexuality Education Standards, for which she also served as a co-author.     Dr. Schroeder is the former executive director of Answer, a national sexuality education organization dedicated to providing and promoting comprehensive sexuality education to young people and the adults who teach them.  She has also served as the associate vice president of education and training at Planned Parenthood of New York City, and, before that, manager of education and special projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.     Dr. Schroeder was a co-founding editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, and has authored or edited numerous publications, including Sexuality Education: Theory and Practice with Dr. Clint Bruess and the four-part book series, Sexuality Education: Past, Present and Future with Dr. Judy Kuriansky.  She is a frequently sought-out spokesperson in the news media on issues relating to sexual health education and youth development, having appeared on BBC’s “The Why Factor,” several NPR affiliates, and in The New York Times, CNN Online, The Huffington Post, among others. In this episode Dr. Menije speaks with me about sexual orientation OCD, distinguishing between anxiety and sexual arousal and looking at what treatment entails.     Dr. Menije of Embracing You Therapy is a leading expert on OCD who is passionate about helping you be in charge of your life, not OCD. In our work together, she helps to navigate how to fulfill these needs most functionally within clients’ lives. Dr. Winterrowd strives to create a safe space where open communication and honesty are welcomed and embraces a holistic approach that combines various therapies to help individuals and couples achieve greater levels of satisfaction in their relationships as well as lives.     Currently, Dr. Winterrowd is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Human Sexuality at the Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health and is devoted to helping clients to overcome sexual and relationship challenges by improving the connection with partners, enhancing relational intimacy by focusing on desires, and identifying new ways in which to bond that fulfill each person’s needs. Dr. Winterrowd helps individuals navigate the physical and emotional process encountered by sexual pain challenges, erectile dysfunction, or struggling with out of control sexual behaviors that are causing emotional pain and difficulties in their relationships.
